Condition: Excellent, altered Date: c. 1855

This dwelling, recorded as Kyne's Store in the initial inventory, faces south on the north side of Main Street and is flanked by the tri-gabled dwelling at 5764 Main on the west and HO-368, Boyle's Tavern on the east. The two story three bay side gabled structure has been heavily modernized on the exterior. The frame structure is clad in vinyl siding while the side gabled roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles. All of the windows in the house are vinyl replacements. A large interior end chimney is located on the eastern wall of the structure and it has either been extensively repointed or entirely rebuilt. A large rear addition may be relatively early; the addition is actually four bays wide (one wider than the front portion of the house) and one room deep and is capped by a gable roof parallel to the one on the front of the house.

On the first story of the front fa9ade is found the only major alteration since the 1970's inventory was completed. A window in the center bay has been converted into an entry door in the last 30 years. The original entry door, four panel with two long arched panels above two short rectangular ones, in the left bay is still in place. The window in the right bay is very tall - nearly floor to ceiling - and it is unclear when this enlargement took place. On the second story, the left most bay is occupied by a window with a jib door beneath it while the other two bays have plain windows. The front fafade is decorated with fixed red vinyl shutters. A front porch that has been almost entirely redone also adorns this fa9ade. The floor of the full width porch is stone but the supports

are currently vinyl Doric columns. The first story has no balustrade but an iron balustrade currently runs around the perimeter of the flat roof at the second story level.

The interior of the building was not surveyed but as viewed from the front door, it appears to be more intact than the exterior. Originally a side hall plan, the shop occupied the front room on the first floor and double doors allowed it to be closed off from the family's space. The original stair is still in place along the western wall and boasts fine scroll decoration on the stair ends. Wood floors, high ceilings, plaster walls, columns, reeded door trim with bulls eye comer blocks, and a decorative mantle are all intact.

HO-371 KYNE'S STORE mid-eighteen hundreds Elkridge Private Patrick Kyne, one of three Kyne's who came to America in the early 1800's, bought this property in 1839. Used as a grocery and confectionery store in the mid to late 1800's, i t is presently a well-maintained residence whose store front has been altered to accommodate i t s large f irs t floor living room windows. I t is a three story gabled roof wood frame building three bays wide and three bays deep with brick chimney on i ts north wall.

Symmetrical fenestration, proportionally scaled from first to third floors, punctuates the facade, while a wide flat-roofed porch with wrought iron ballustrade supported by four fluted doric columns runs along the facade of the f i r s t floor. The rectangular east entrance lies in the north bay and is surmounted by a two-lite transom.

In 1839 the property on Main Street was bought by Miss Kyne's grand­fa ther . The present s t ructure located on the west side of M a i n s t ree t south of the in te rsec t ion of Main Street and Levering Avenue, is a three s tory wood frame bu i l d ing rest ing on a stone foundation three bays wide and three bays deep wi th br ick chimney on the north wal l and crowned by a gabled roof .

Symmetrical fenes t ra t i on , propor t iona l ly scaled from f i r s t to t h i r d f l o o r s , punctuates the facade. The windows are double-hung with two-over-two l i g h t s on the f i r s t f l oo r and s ix -over -s ix l i gh t s on the second f l o o r . Two t h i r d f l o o r windows with s i x -over -s i x l i t e s are located on the north wal l w i th in the gabled roof l i n e .

Green wooden vented shutters decorate the white frame s t ruc tu re . O r i g i na l l y a store porch ran the width o f the west elevat ion facing Main St reet . I t is now a f l a t roofed porch w i th wrought i ron bal lustrade supported by four dor ic f l u ted columns. The other s ign i f i can t a rch i tec tu ra l element of the house, a rectangular entrance door, is located on the north bay and surmounted by a two - l i t e transom.

The north wal l holds a f i r s t f l o o r double casement window on the west bay wi th s i x - s i x l i t e s . Four steps and a wrought i ron r a i l i n g lead to the entrance door composed of f i f t e e n l i t e s l y ing west of the window.

A back porch on the west e levat ion i s now closed in with louvered win­dows and screens. Five wooden steps f lanked by a wooden r a i l i n g lead to the north entrance of the porch.

An ear ly add i t ion to the house l i e s on the west w a l l , i t s gablecVoof running north-south rest ing beside the gabled roof of the o r ig ina l s t ruc ture which also runs north-south. I t is four bays wide and one bay deep wi th a f i r s t and second f l o o r double-hung window located on i t s west wal l wi th two-over- two l i t e s and green shut ters.

The i n t e r i o r has been a l tered when i t was recycled for res ident ia l use only . I t s i n t e r i o r white wood paneling and spacious l i v i n g room is l i gh ted by the large windows already described.

H i s t o r i c a l l y , the property was bought in 1839 by Patrick Kyne, one of three Kyne's who came to America in the ear ly 1800's. (Peter, brother o f Patr ick and a f i r s t cousin).

Peter Kyne, brother of Patr ick had eight ch i l d ren , one of whom, B i l l y , owned a l l of what is now Harwood and farmed the land.

Miss El izabeth Kyne's grandfather's brother (on her mother's side) was Clement Worms who owned property south of the present house. I t is noted on the 1878 Hopkin's A t l as . He ran a boot and shoe store. This s t ruc ture caught f i r e , burned down and has since been r e b u i l t .

During the c i v i l war Miss Kyne's grandmother, Margaret Worms roasted coffee fo r the Union sold iers who camped on Ha l l ' s H i l l , west of present Route I , who guarded Thomas Viaduct and Route I .

The f i r s t Kyne to ar r ive in America is buried in the Carrol Grave Yard at Doughoregan Manor. His wife and chi ldren are in St. Augustine's cemeten

Miss Elizabeth Kyne's grandmother, Ju l i a Costalay, and Patr ick Kyne owned what is now ca l led Elkridge Heights. She sold i t for $1100 to send her boys to Rock H i l l College in E l l i c o t t C i t y .

In 1888 Mis Kyne's father and mother were married af ter a th i r teen year courtship. Twelve years l a te r he died and Mrs. Kyne carr ied on by managing a confectionery and grocery store in the present bu i ld ing on Main St reet .

Representative of the hard working, industr ious people who se t t l ed in Elkridge near the hust le and bustle of the Landing, the Kyne's are important to county and state h i s to ry . I n i t i a l l y three men in the family came to America in the ear ly 1800's. They worked hard, acquired land and b u i l t businesses which helped carry on the commercial and farm l i f e of E lk r idge, ra is ing God-fearing, educated, industr ious c i t i zens for Howard County and Maryland.

A rch i t ec tu ra l l y the store f ron t has been a l te red to accommodate the large f i r s t f l o o r l i v i n g room windows. The e f f e c t , however, i s a pleasing one and blends in scale and texture wi th the other buildings on Main St reet , helping to create an integrated a rch i t ec tu ra l l y pleasing streetscape.
