SERIES SNAPSHOT: This afternoon’s game marks the fourth all-time meeting between Hobart and End-icott. The Statesmen have won each of the previous three contests by a combined score of 98-55.
ABOUT LAST YEAR: Last season in Beverly, Mass., Hobart produced 504 yards of offense on the way to a 42-20 victory over Endicott. The Statesmen had a tenuous 7-6 lead at halftime, but ex-ploded for 369 yards and 35 points in the second half. SHANE SWEENEY was 22-of-45 passing for 364 yards and four touchdowns. BRANDON SHED caught seven passes for 135 yards and a TD while SEAN CUNNINGHAM ’17 pulled in four passes for 81 yards and a TD. BRADLEY BURNS ’17 led the ground game, picking up 79 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. AJ McFARLANE led the charge on the other side of the ball, recording 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks, and a forced fumble.
TEACHER vs. STUDENT II: For the second straight game, Hobart Head Coach MIKE CRAGG will match wits with one of his former student-athletes and former assistant coach. Endicott Head Coach KEVIN DEWALL ’00 is in his third season as the leader of the Gulls. Prior to taking the reins, he was Hobart’s offensive coordinator. Last weekend, Cragg and the Statesmen posted a 56-30 win over Head Coach SCOTT YODER ’01 and the Shenandoah Hornets. Yoder was the defensive coordinator at Hobart for many years.
OTHER FAMILIAR FACES: Endicott’s coaching staff features two former Statesmen, in addition to Coach DeWall. Offensive Line Coach ART GARVEY ’13 and Linebackers Coach TOM ELDER ’14 are also former Statesmen. Garvey was a two-time All-Liberty League selection and a 2012 D3football.com third team All-American. Elder was a team captain and a projected starter as a senior, but a preseason injury cost him the entire season.
STATESMEN EVERYWHERE: If you need more Hobart tie-ins to this game, Endicott’s most recent opponent, MIT, is also led by a Statesman. CHAD MARTINOVICH ’94 is in his ninth season at the helm for the Engineers.
HAPPY HOMECOMING: For the seventh consecutive season, Hobart won its Home-coming game. The Statesmen defeated Shenandoah 56-30 under the lights last week. Since the Homecoming tradition was revived in 2010, Hobart is 7-1 on Homecoming. The Statesmen’s 56 points and the game’s 86 combined points are the most during a Hobart Homecoming.
RUNAWAY: Hobart erupted for a season-high 368 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on the ground against Shenandoah. The Statesmen running backs found another gear in the second half, piling up 310 yards rushing. It’s the most rushing yards by a Hobart team since Sept. 27, 2014 (404 yds vs. Merchant Marine). The seven rushing TDs are tied for second on Hobart’s single game list (7 at St. Lawrence in 2001). The record is nine set against Kenyon in 1953.
SERIES HISTORY 09/13/2014 at Endicott W 28-1809/12/2015 Endicott W 28-1709/10/2016 at Endicott W 42-20Overall: 3-0; Home: 1-0
NO ORDINARY JOE: Senior running back JOE LETIZIA produced a career-high 162 yards rushing and two touchdowns against Shenandoah. That’s more rushing yards than Hobart had as a team in either of its first two games this year. It’s also the most rushing yards by a Statesman since STEVEN WEBB ’14 ran for 203 yards at Springfield on Oct. 12, 2013. Letizia averaged 10.1 yards per carry and was named the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week. Letizia has 32 carries for 228 yards and three TDs this season. His 7.1 yards per carry are third in the Liberty League and his 76.0 yards per game rank fourth.
CLEARING THE WAY: After Hobart rushed for 368 yards and accumlated 517 yards of total offense, the Statesmen offensive line was named to the D3football.com Nation-al Team of the Week. Sophomore right tackle MICAH HOLLOWAY, junior right guard JACK KOCH, senior center ALEX HELM, senior left guard STEPHEN VANHOESEN and junior left tackle JOHN DEVENEY were recognized for their efforts in the trenches.
TWICE IS NICE: In addition to Joe Letizia’s 162-yard performance, first-year running back DAKOTA HARVEY also eclipsed the century mark, gaining 131 yards. It’s the first time since Sept. 21, 2013, that Hobart has had two 100-yard rushers. Four years ago, STE-VEN WEBB ’14 (150) and CONNER HARTIGAN ’16 (119) did the honors against Utica.
LEAGUE LEADER: On top of his first career 100-yard game, DAKOTA HARVEY also scored three touchdowns. It’s the first time a Hobart running back has rushed for three touchdowns in a game since DOMINIQUE ELLIS ’15 had three against Springfield in 2014. Harvey leads the Liberty League and is 12th in the nation with five rushing touch-downs this season. He’s also the conference’s leading scorer, producing 10.0 points per game.
TOP TACKLER: Sophomore linebacker JEDH DOWNEY had a career-high 15 tackles in the win over Shenandoah. He leads the Liberty League and is 51st in the nation in tackles. Downey has 32 total tackles, 10.7 per game.
RECORD-MATCHING PERFORMANCE: First-year kicker KYLE HACKETT tied the Hobart game record for PATs made on Saturday night, converting all eight of his chances against the Hornets. He shares the record with ERIC AMPUJA ’05, DOMINICK ANCO-NA ’08, REYES GUEVARA ’14 and FELIX PRATICO ’01.
QUIET NIGHT: Senior quarterback SHANE SWEENEY has put up big numbers during his Hobart career, but with the rushing attack firing on all cylinders last week, his numbers were more modest against Shenandoah. He was 10-of-18 passing for 149 yards against the Hornets. It’s the fewest completions and fewest pass attempts in his 21-game Hobart career. Only once has he had fewer passing yards. In 2015, Sweeney threw for 110 yards at Springfield, but was injured early in the fourth quarter and did not return.
UPWARD MOBILITY: Senior quarterback SHANE SWEENEY is nearing the apex of his climb up Hobart’s career passing records. He enters today’s game with 450 career completions for 5,644 yards and 57 touchdowns. Sweeney needs six completions, 454 yards and five touchdown passes to break the Hobart career standards all currently held by SHAWN MIZRO ’07.
STREAKING: Senior wide receiver BRANDON SHED caught two passes for 41 yards against Shenandoah. He now has at least one reception in 24 consecutive games. That’s tied with FRANK FEDORJAKA ’89 for fourth on the list. NICO KARAGOSIAN ’97 is third with a 26-game streak.
NEARING THE SUMMIT: Speaking of Brandon Shed, the West Palm Beach, Fla., native is closing in on Hobart’s career receptions and receiving yards records. Already the career receiving touchdowns record holder (27), he needs 45 receptions and 402 yards to secure those records, both held by DAN SUOZZI ’05.
THIRTEEN CENTURIES: Here’s one more note on Brandon Shed. In 35 career games, he has 100 or more receiving yards 13 times. He began the season with No. 13, catching nine passes for 132 yards against Brockport. Shed’s most impressive career performance was at St. Lawrence last season when he tied the Hobart game record for receptions and broke the mark for receiving yards. Shed burned the Saints for 12 receptions for 241 yards and two touchdowns.

It’s the longest fumble return in Hobart history. Teammate TOM D’ANTONIO previously held the record with a 72-yard return at Springfield in 2015. Only one play in Hobart history covered more ground. In 1936, HUGH MILLER ’38 had a 100-yard interception return at Hamilton.
RIO GRANDE: Senior punter RIO SCHMIDT has a Liberty League best 43.2 yard per punt average through three games. He’s landed three of his nine punts inside the 20 and has had two travel 50 yards or more. The Hobart record for season punting average is 41.3 by DOMINICK ANCONA ’08 in 2006.
