The M

ystery of the Three

Hobos: Solved?

By Joe M

elchior

For many years, JFK

assassination researchers have speculated that several photographs taken in D

ealy Plaza shortly after the assassi-nation of President K

ennedy reveal three individuals that may have

been involved in the shooting of the President. T

hese three men have

come to be know

n over the years as "The T

hree Hobos."

Questions have been raised about the identity of these gentlem

en for close to 29 years. T

here are several reasons for concern in this m

atter. First, the three hobos were arrested shortly after the assassina-

tion in a railroad box car behind the picket fence in the "grassy knoll" area Second, they w

ere supposedly released shortly after being taken to the D

allas Police Station in D

ealy Plaza. T

hird, there was no record

of the arrest of these men anyw

here. And last, but certainly not least,

they disappeared without a trace after the assassination.

Many researchers, including m

yself, have speculated on the identify of the 3 hobos. Som

e photo experts have claimed that one of

the hobos is Frank Sturgis, the C

IA m

an who w

as involved in the Bay

of Pigs invasion and in the training of anti-Castro C

ubans in the assassination attem

pts on Fidel Castro. A

nother hobo is thought to be C

harles Harrelson, a contract killer w

ho is now serving tim

e for the contract killing of U

.S. District Judge John H

. Wood Jr. H

arrelson claim

ed at one time that he in fact, w

as involvedin the assassination of President K

ennedy. He has since retracted th

at statemen

t T

he third hobo, w

ho is wearing a hat and carrying a paper sack in the photos that

were taken in D

ealy Plaza that day, bears a remarkable resem

blance to W

atergate conspirator E. H

oward H

unt. Many experts claim

this third hobo is H

unt.

According to the arrest reports, all three w

ere arrested for va-grancy and robbery im

mediately after the assassination. Further

investigation shows that D

oyle and Gedney are still living, but that

Abram

s died in Boston som

e time ago.

The syndicated television show

, "A C

urrent Affair", after som

e diligent detective w

ork, tracked down H

arold Doyle in K

lamm

ath F

alls, Oregon for an interview

which aired in F

ebruary of 1992. Doyle

claimed that he and the other tw

o "hobos" had left a homeless shelter

in Dallas and w

ere on their way to Fort W

orth when they w

ere de-tained in the railroad yards behind the grassy knoll. T

hey were ar-

rested in a boxcar. From there, they w

ere taken into custody and m

arched off to the police station. They w

ere held until Osw

ald was

arrested, at which tim

e a police officer told them, "Y

ou're lucky. You

just got to set the man w

ho shot President Kennedy." A

t this point, according to D

oyle, they were taken in front of a judge and booked for

vagrancy, given 6 day sentences, and promptly released. D

oyle swears

that neither he nor his comrades had anything to do w

ith the assassina-tion. D

oes this solve the mystery of the three hobos? O

n the surface, one w

ould think so. But like so m

any aspects of assassination, this revelation presents even m

ore questions. Doyle, the arresting officer,

and the Dallas Police D

epartment have all stated that the "hobos" w

ere released alm

ost imm

ediately after their arrest. But according to the

actual arrest reports, all three were released on N

ovember 26th, four

days after the assassination. Also, according to the arrest reports, all

three were arrested for vagrancy and robbery. R

obbery of what?

Harold D

oyle and Gus A

brams (dead) have been accounted for.

Where is John Forrester G

edney? According to the F.B

.I. he is cur-rently residing som

ewhere in Florida. A

t the time this article w

as w

ritten, Gedney had not yet been contacted by anybody. A

nd how

long and how w

ell did Doyle know

his partners? Finally, I find it just a little conspicuous that after 28 years, these

arrest reports were suddenly discovered in the m

idst of growing

awareness by the A

merican public of the assassination of President

John F. Kennedy.

Some people m

ay think that the discovery of these arrest reports etia

If the assassination occurred at 12:30, why w

Tw

o Navy m

edical technicians who w

ere present at the 1963 autopsy of President John

F. Kennedy have stated that photographs and X

-rays released by the government to support its

"lone assassin" theory are "phony". A

t a news conference in W

ashington last Thursday, w

hich was little noticed by m

ajor new

s media, Jerrol C

uster, who took the X

-rays of President Kennedy on the night of N

ovember

22, 1963, said the X-rays now

presented to the public "are wrong".

Another technician, Floyd R

iebe, who photographed K

ennedy's body during the autopsy, said photo now

shown to the public are "phony and not the photographs w

e took? T

heir assertions were intended to refute statem

ents from tw

o JFK autopsy doctors w

ho a w

eek earlier had stated that Kennedy w

as struck by two bullets from

high and behind, thus supporting the theory of the governm

ent that the fatal shots were fired by L

ee Harvey O

swald

from the T

exas School Book D

epository. While acknow

ledging shortcomings in the official

autopsy of Kennedy, retired N

avy Capt. Jam

es J. Hum

es and retired Navy C

mdr. J. T

hornton B

oswell nevertheless strenuously defended their conclusion that K

ennedy was struck by tw

o bullets from

above and behind. T

he doctors' statements as presented by G

eorge D. L

undberg, editor of the Journal of the A

merican M

edical Association, skirted the m

ain issue which is that the descriptions of

Kennedy's w

ounds as seen by Dallas m

edical authorities and the autopsy doctors are inconsistent, raising the possibility of alteration of the president's w

ounds while the body w

as in the custody of federal officials.

Every person in D

allas who saw

Kennedy's head w

ound stated there was a large hole in

the right rear portion of his head, indicating an exit wound from

a frontal shot. T

his description was confirm

ed by Riebe, w

ho said, "The picture of the back of his head

is not right. All that part of his head w

as missing as far as the right ear and there w

as not enough scalp to pull over the w

ound as it is in the picture." R

iebe added, "These film

s are doctored one way or another. It w

as touched up." C

uster, who took X

-rays of Kennedy's head , said the X

-rays now show

n to the public show

a large hole in the front part of his skull. "There w

as no damage to his face and no part of •

his skull was m

issing on the forward part of his head," said C

uster. "These are fake X

-rays!" In his statem

ents, Custer added m

ore heat to the allegation that an intact bullet slug was

found at autopsy. A

t least two separate governm

ent reports mention a "m

issile" removed

from the president's body during the autopsy.

7.111 •• 64;••.rorr.

found at nis atitopsy. A

t least two separatt governm

ent reports mention a "m

issile" rernoved from

the president's body during the autopsy. C

uster said when he lifted K

ennedy's body to place X-ray film

under it, a bullet fell out

• of his back. If indeed a bullet slug w

as rentoved from K

ennedy's body then it obviously could not

have gone through him to strike T

exas Gov. John C

onnally. The notion that one bullet struck

both Kennedy and C

onnally is the basis of the government's theory that one m

an fired all the shots during the assassination. B

oth Connally and his personal physician, D

r. Robert Shaw

, have

discounted the idea that Connally w

as struck by the first bullet which had passed through

Kennedy.

What m

any assassination researchers cannot understand is why the pronouncem

ents of

the AM

A and autopsy doctors w

as given nationwide m

edia play while the rebuttal by m

en who

also were at the autopsy w

as passed over lightly.
