Hockeyhasaproudhistoryofbeingaparticipationsportforboys,girls,menandwomen.WealsohaveastronghistoryatOlympicandCommonwealthGamesresultinginasportforallVictorian’sandmoreimportantlyafamilygame.

OurrangeofinclusionprogramsimplementedbyourdedicatedteamofstaffhasensuredthattheproudhistorycancontinueandthatthefamilygamebecomesaccessibletomoreVictorians.Targetedinitiativesinthedevelopmentofimprovedparticipationexperiencesforyoungchildren,mastersathletes,girls,women,CALDcommunitiesandpeoplewithadisabilityareallkeycomponentsofwhatHockeyVictoriaanditsclubsoffer.

Thehandbookprovidesadetailedoverviewofeverythingfamiliesandprospectiveparticipantsneedtoknowabouthockeyandhowtogetinvolved.Fromlearningthebasicrulesofthegamethroughtotherangeofprogramofferingsforparticipantsatalllevelstoengageandparticipate,thisbookletwillprovideyouwiththeinformationyourequiretojoinourhockeyfamily.

Summer HockeySummerhockeyprovidesarangeofoptionsforplayinghockeyin

Safe & Welcoming EnvironmentInjury PreventionHockeyisaveryactivesportthatrequiresmoderateamountofenergy.Someinjuriescanbepreventedwithstretchingexercisesbeforeandafterphysicalactivity,appropriatedietandhydration:

• Beginexercisewellhydratedandfuelledup.

• Alwayswarmupandcooldownafterexercise.

• Ensurethebodyisreplenishedwithfluidduring andafterexercise

• Alwayswearamouthguardandshinpads

Healthy EatingHealthyeatingisvitalforyouandyourchild’shealth.TheAustralianhealthyfoodguidelinesaresimpletofollow:

• Eatplentyoffruit,vegetables,breadandgrains anddrinkplentyofwater.

• Eatmoderateamountsofanimal- basedfoodssuchasdairyproducts, leanmeat,poultry,fishandeggs.

Responsible Drinking

Alcoholandsportdon’tmix!Theconsumptionofalcoholdehydrates

thebodyandimpairsvision,restrictsbodyfunctionandimpacton

recovery.Thisallresultsinreducedperformance.

HockeyVictoriarecommendsthatparentswhochoosetoconsume

alcoholdosoinaresponsiblemannerandabidebythelaw.

Smoking

Thegoalsofsportarefitness,fun,teamwork,community

connectednessandparticipation,disciplineandexcellence.Smoking

anditshealtheffectsarecontrarytothesegoals,HockeyVictoria

thereforeencouragespeoplenottosmoke.

FromApril2014,theamendedTobaccoAct1987(Vic)banssmoking

• Within10metersofasportingvenuethatisanoutdoorpublic placeduringanorganisedunderagesportingevent

• Duringtrainingorpracticesessionstoprepareforanorganised underagesportingevent,andbreaksorintervalsduring thecourseoftheevent,trainingsessionorpracticesession

• Outdoordininganddrinkingareasthatiswithin10meters ofanoutdoorpublicsportingvenue

Sun Smart

Ashockeyismostlyanoutdoorsport,HockeyVictoriaencourages

allparticipantstobesunsmart.Participantsareencouragedtowear

appropriateclothingandapplysunscreenwhileplaying.

Member Protection Information Officers (MPIO)

HockeyVictoriaencouragesallclubstohaveatrained(MPIO)who

memberscangotowiththeirconcernsregardingdiscriminationand

harassment.TheMPIOisresponsibleforprovidinginformationabout

aperson’srights,responsibilitiesandoptionstoanindividualmaking

Five Key Facts about Hockey

1. The ball can only be hit with the flat side of the stick.

Penalty Corner/ Short Corner-Apenaltyawardedtotheattackingteamforanoffenceinsidethedefensiveteam’s23meterarea.Thepenaltyistakenbyplacingtheballontheback-line,onthesecondsmallmarkerawayfromthegoal.Attackerpushestheballtowardsthetopofthecircle,whereotherattackersarespreadout.Theballmustgooutsidethecirclebeforeashotatgoalcanbetaken.ThedefensiveteamisonlyallowedfiveplayersincludingtheGKbehindthegoallinetodefendthecorner.Theyrunouttotrytopreventthegoalbeingscored.Allotherplayersofthedefensiveteammustbebehindthehalfwayline.
