WELCOMEHockeyVictoriaiscommittedtoprovidingsafe,welcomingandinclusiveenvironmentsacrossits165hockeyclubsandassociations.
Hockeyhasaproudhistoryofbeingaparticipationsportforboys,girls,menandwomen.WealsohaveastronghistoryatOlympicandCommonwealthGamesresultinginasportforallVictorian’sandmoreimportantlyafamilygame.
OurrangeofinclusionprogramsimplementedbyourdedicatedteamofstaffhasensuredthattheproudhistorycancontinueandthatthefamilygamebecomesaccessibletomoreVictorians.Targetedinitiativesinthedevelopmentofimprovedparticipationexperiencesforyoungchildren,mastersathletes,girls,women,CALDcommunitiesandpeoplewithadisabilityareallkeycomponentsofwhatHockeyVictoriaanditsclubsoffer.
Thehandbookprovidesadetailedoverviewofeverythingfamiliesandprospectiveparticipantsneedtoknowabouthockeyandhowtogetinvolved.Fromlearningthebasicrulesofthegamethroughtotherangeofprogramofferingsforparticipantsatalllevelstoengageandparticipate,thisbookletwillprovideyouwiththeinformationyourequiretojoinourhockeyfamily.

Indoor HockeyIndoorhockeyisa6asidecompetitionplayedfromOctoberthrough
toJanuaryacrossVictoriaatindoorvenues.
Summer HockeySummerhockeyprovidesarangeofoptionsforplayinghockeyin
whatwastraditionallytheoffseasonforhockey.Summerhockey
isaprogramrunatmanydifferentclubsinavarietyofdifferent
formats.HockeyVictoriaalsoofferssomesummercompetitions
includingsocialmixed,men’s,women’sandmasters.

Safe & Welcoming EnvironmentInjury PreventionHockeyisaveryactivesportthatrequiresmoderateamountofenergy.Someinjuriescanbepreventedwithstretchingexercisesbeforeandafterphysicalactivity,appropriatedietandhydration:

Alcoholandsportdon’tmix!Theconsumptionofalcoholdehydrates
thebodyandimpairsvision,restrictsbodyfunctionandimpacton
recovery.Thisallresultsinreducedperformance.
HockeyVictoriarecommendsthatparentswhochoosetoconsume
alcoholdosoinaresponsiblemannerandabidebythelaw.
Smoking
Thegoalsofsportarefitness,fun,teamwork,community
connectednessandparticipation,disciplineandexcellence.Smoking
anditshealtheffectsarecontrarytothesegoals,HockeyVictoria
thereforeencouragespeoplenottosmoke.
FromApril2014,theamendedTobaccoAct1987(Vic)banssmoking
• Within10metersofasportingvenuethatisanoutdoorpublic placeduringanorganisedunderagesportingevent
• Duringtrainingorpracticesessionstoprepareforanorganised underagesportingevent,andbreaksorintervalsduring thecourseoftheevent,trainingsessionorpracticesession
• Outdoordininganddrinkingareasthatiswithin10meters ofanoutdoorpublicsportingvenue

allparticipantstobesunsmart.Participantsareencouragedtowear
appropriateclothingandapplysunscreenwhileplaying.
Member Protection Information Officers (MPIO)
HockeyVictoriaencouragesallclubstohaveatrained(MPIO)who
memberscangotowiththeirconcernsregardingdiscriminationand
harassment.TheMPIOisresponsibleforprovidinginformationabout
aperson’srights,responsibilitiesandoptionstoanindividualmaking
acomplaintorraisingaconcern.

PlayingHockeyisasportforpeopleofallagesandabilities.Mostclubs/associationsruncompetitionsforadults.Whynotgetagroupoffriendstogetherorotherparentstogetherandstartateam!Thisisanexcellentwaytostayinvolvedinyourkidssport,getfitandhavefunallatthesametime.
CoachingCoachingisanexcellentwaytogetinvolvedinhockeyandyoudon’tneedtohavepreviouslyplayedthesport.Localclubs/associationsandHockeyVictoriaconductregularcoachingcoursestoteachpeoplehowtocoach.Coachingcanbeaveryrewardingwaytogetinvolvedinyourchild’shockeyandhelpthelocalclub/association.
UmpiringHockeyVictoriaandclub/associationsregularlyconductumpiringcourses.Umpiringisagreatwaytogetinvolvedandmakeacontributiontohockey.Umpiresreceivematchpaymentsandit’salsoagreatwaytobecomeactiveandintegratedintoaclub/association.Withoutumpiresthereisnohockeymatch!
VolunteeringClubsarealwayslookingforpeopletovolunteerinabroadrangeofroles,assistingatevents,servingoncommittees,canteenrosters.Ifyouareinterestedinbecomingmoreinvolvedapproachyourlocalclub/associationtodeterminehowyourskillsandinterestcanbestbeutilized.“Togetherweachievemore.”

Five Key Facts about Hockey
1. The ball can only be hit with the flat side of the stick.
2. The ball cannot be stopped or played with the feet,
except by the Goal keeper.
3. There are no Left Handed Hockey Sticks.
4. There is no off side rule in Hockey.

Penalty Corner/ Short Corner-Apenaltyawardedtotheattackingteamforanoffenceinsidethedefensiveteam’s23meterarea.Thepenaltyistakenbyplacingtheballontheback-line,onthesecondsmallmarkerawayfromthegoal.Attackerpushestheballtowardsthetopofthecircle,whereotherattackersarespreadout.Theballmustgooutsidethecirclebeforeashotatgoalcanbetaken.ThedefensiveteamisonlyallowedfiveplayersincludingtheGKbehindthegoallinetodefendthecorner.Theyrunouttotrytopreventthegoalbeingscored.Allotherplayersofthedefensiveteammustbebehindthehalfwayline.
