‘When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me….’

These words begin a poem written by Jenny Joseph in 1961. It is a poem that has gone on to inspire many. A BBC 1996 survey identified it as the UK’s most popular post-war poem, beating Dylan Thomas’s “Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night.” Its actual title being ‘Warning’, though it is often remembered by the first line.

Inspired by the opening sentence in 1997, Sue Ellen Cooper of Fullerton, California, gave her friend a 55th birthday gift that included a vintage red fedora and a copy of “Warning.” Sue Ellen went on to found the ‘Red Hat Society’, “the place where there is fun after fifty.” As of 2011, there were over 40,000 chapters in the United States and 30 other countries.

The women famously wear red hats and purple outfits to their public gatherings, usually tea. It may or may not surprise you that Jenny hersel,f now in her autumn years, having written the poem aged 29, does not wear purple, claiming it is a colour that does not suit her.

Purple is a colour often seen in our churches, it is one of our ‘Liturgical’ or ‘seasonal’ colours. Purple is the colour that we have in churches throughout Lent and Advent.

The colour reminds us of the violet flower that bows its head and is a symbol of humility. Lent is the season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is a quiet season of reflection. The colour of Advent is more of a rose-purple, like the sky before sunrise. This is the time of year when the church waits in joyful hope to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

Advent begins this year on Sunday 27th November, the colours in the church will change and our mood will become one of waiting in joyful hope. But the waiting in hope is just as important as our Christmas celebrations four weeks later. As is traditional in St. Mary’s we will begin our Advent waiting with our Advent carol service, 27th November at 6.30pm where everyone is welcome and we enjoy ending the service with mulled wine and mince pies.

As we begin to feel the pace quickening and Christmas approaching, let us enjoy the season of purple and expectant waiting, when it begins later this month.

May God bless youRev Heather Wilcox

There will be no ‘Ten 2 Ten’ service at St. Mary’s church in November due to Remembrance Day. The next one will be on the 11th December. The ‘Ten 2 Ten’ service is an informal service suitable for all ages – to find out more come along and try it out! If you like Messy church, you’ll like this too.

A Tale for November .....the month of Remembrance

In 1944 a lady who was 14 at the time had been to visit her friend who lived in the council houses at the Norwich end of the village. As she was going home she heard a loud noise, she turned towards the noise and saw an American plane coming towards her getting lower and lower - it was so low she could see the pilot and crew in the cockpit.

The pilot turned the plane and it narrowly missed St Michael’s Church, clipped the top of a tree and crashed into a field near the Church. The lady thought the crew had been killed, the pilot had managed to turn the plane so it didn’t crash into the village so no villagers were hurt.

I knew nothing about this so asked my next door neighbour’s son who is an aviation archaeologist. He gave me the following facts.

From Civil Defence Records1st April 1944 15.45 hours reported B24 crashes at Long Stratton 250 yards east of main road, 150 yards north of St Michael’s Church. No bombs on board. The Civil Defence went to most local aircraft crashes and recorded the basic details.

From the official records we know that on 1st April 1944 the American 8th Army Air force despatched 245 B17 Flying Fortresses and 195 B24 Liberator bombers to Ludwigshafen, a city on the Rhine opposite Mannheim, on what was mission number 287. The B17’s encountered heavy cloud over France so turned back bringing back their bombs without loss.

The B24’s also encountered bad weather but continued with the mission, dropping their bombs on Strasbourg, Pforzheim, Schaffhausen and Graffhausen with 12 aircraft being lost in action and three bombers crashing in England on their way back to their bases.

A B24 in flight like the one that crashed

7

The B24 that crashed at St Michael’s was one of these. It was from the 702nd Squadron of 445th Bomb Group based at Tibenham with the following crew on board:

Out of the crew of ten, three air men survived - Robert Diffenbacher, Walter Russell and Edward Ringle.

One of those who perished was Alfred H Luhmann, the right hand side waist gunner. Alfred was born on the 8th April 1920, he lived at Hackensack, New Jersey. After the war a road in his town was named in his honour.

People from the village went to see the crash site. Neville Addy, who was five at the time, remembers going to see the crashed plane, but when he got to the stile which led into the field he didn’t know how to get over it, so didn’t actually get to see the crashed plane until a few days later, when his mum took him.

Pieces of perspex [plexiglass] from the plane’s windows were collected by local boys, who made rings out of it to give to their girlfriends. The lady who saw the plane crash had one for several years but doesn’t know where it is now.

The Parish Council Minutes of 13th April 1944 state: Letter sent to officer commanding at Tibenham to convey sympathy to relations and friends of the men who lost their lives in the plane crash Saturday April 1st. Crew praised for sacrificing their lives to avoid crashing into village.

My thanks to the lady who told me about the plane, Nigel Beckett for the information, the 445th Bomb Group who gave permission for us to use the crash photograph and Linda who obtained the photograph and typed this up.

Our thanks to all the people who have given their lives in so many conflicts all over the world.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEMJudith Baker

Long Stratton ‘Then’ and ‘Now’ Calendar 2017The Churches of St Mary’s and St Michael’s have produced a calendar for 2017 which is now on sale. It portrays different parts of the village from the past to the present. The cost is £5 and they are available from various places in the village - The Butcher’s House, Lawrence Paul, Bekays, Stratton Motor Company, Cycle Shed, Cheshunt Hairdressers and Scissorhappy. Or you can call in to the Church Parish Office, The Rectory, 8 Flowerpot Lane Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 12.30pm.

Family Cycle Ride The final Family Cycle ride of the year took place on Sunday 30th October.

We headed to Goodies Farm shop via Wood Green and Ansons Lane, which is where the first ride went way back in May 2015.

Since then we have taken twelve different rides to various pubs and places of interest. This will be my last time as the organiser of Family Cycling as due to working away and family the commitment of one Sunday a month is not sustainable.

If anyone is able to take on the role feel free to contact me. It requires someone to organise a ride one Sunday a month of about 10 to 15 miles suitable for families, the onus being on those coming on the ride to be responsible for their own maintenance and safety , in effect be self sufficient. I can be contacted on 01508 536724

The Cycle Tourist Club, now renamed Cycling UK, were previously approached in regard to training a Cycle ride leader. There is funding available for this in their budget and anyone taking on this role could qualify to do the course to train as a ride leader, although it would mean the rides would need more formal organisation.

Happy cycling Jez Briggs

LOCAL WALK .... OctoberThe trouble with writing a report on a walk like this is that it is such a sociable group of walkers, expertly lead this time by Paul, with welcoming a couple of new walkers and chatting as we went along, I haven’t a clue where we went. Well, I have a vague idea. We did cross into Suffolk at one point - we didn’t need passports, even after Brexit!

So no map this time, if interested you will just have to join us for the next walk. First Monday of the month [7th November], meet in the car park by the public toilets, 10.00 am.

We transferred to Harleston to start this one. Passing a no entry sign in the middle of a field we continued on round Weybread pits, which at times was like visiting the lake district, but without the hills! very pretty though. The mill at Needham was again very picturesque.

The weather has been very kind to us for the last couple of walks, sunny with light cloud and no wind, long may it last.

We saw a pair of buzzards being mobbed by rooks. Lovely to see buzzards again. Growing up in Norfolk, and from a boy, a keen bird watcher, I never spotted them. Probably a combination of 60’s pesticides and over zealous gamekeepers. Moving to Devon for a few years, I was amazed how many there were flying around. We have got them back, let’s look after them.

We also came across a very nice gentleman selling garden produce from a stall on a tiny country lane. I think we were probably the best customers he had all day, buying apples, raspberries, flowers and vegetables. So, laden down but not too far to go back to the cars we concluded another very enjoyable morning.

Meeting held on 12th SeptemberAll six Trustees were present. The main topic concerned the aftermath of the party of the previous Saturday. The hall was left in a disgraceful state requiring a huge effort to get it ready for another function on the following day. Shortcomings in the hall booking process were clear, as was the necessity for demanding a deposit for adult parties where alcohol is to be served, irrespective of previous ‘good behaviour’.

More positively we noted that an oil gauge had been fitted to the storage tank, replacing the primitive and unreliable stick upon which we previously relied to judge when to order in supplies. It was agreed that this was a major technical advance.

Long Stratton & District WIOur Long Stratton Committee here in Long Stratton were keen for our W.I. to take part in National W.I. Sports Week. We perused the suggested activities and decided to go with the option of thinking up a sporty idea of our own. We advertised in the Sexton’s Wheel for help with petanque or boules but were unlucky. However our member Helen found a set of boules in a charity shop and so we decided to give it a go.

An hour before our main meeting and before daylight faded, six keen members played several games on the grass behind the village hall. We don’t know who won but all enjoyed the exercise. Whilst organising this we found most of our members are very active doing various exercise classes or their own gardening.

Our September meeting was a harvest meal of a Ploughman’s followed by blackberry and apple pies made by Jane and Diane. To fit the season, our competition was for a mouse in any medium and the winner was Pat with a lovely sugar craft scene.

The W.I. has its own college in Oxfordshire and many Norfolk W.I.s are raising funds to help with the upkeep. Our W.I. decided to donate the money raised by our monthly raffle.

Our 16th November meeting will be the AGM and a Pudding Evening. Visitors are always welcome to come along for 7.30.pm at Long Stratton Village Hall. For further information call the Secretary Mrs. Shirley Housden on 01508 531154.

Long Stratton Youth CafeThe Long Stratton Youth Cafe has resumed after the summer break with an influx of new members and some old faces as well.Attendances of over thirty being a now weekly occurrence.

We have also had a number of new leaders volunteer, including a young leader. Jez and the chair Matt would like to say a big thanks to all for their continued hard work in keeping the organisation going. To Will for always being there to set up and take down, aided by Ryan and Charlie, and to Julie for the runs to Makro’s to keep the tuck shop stocked.

At the end of the year we will be looking for a further grant to keep running and give the young people of the village something to enjoy each Tuesday evening. This is a great success when only months ago we had concerns that the lack of leaders would make continuing difficult. Thanks to our new leaders for helping us turn the corner.

Jez, Matt, Julie, Will, Tina, Les and DianneThe Youth Cafe runs each Tuesday during term time between 7.15pm and 9pm at the Methodist Chapel, entry is £1. With projected Wii U and Xbox One, and traditional games table tennis, table football, air hockey, pool and a chill out area and the legendary tuck shop.

Long Stratton Medical PartnershipNovember is the time for many men to trial a new facial hair look….. with varying degrees of success. The ever popular ‘Movember’ is a month dedicated to increasing the awareness of Men’s Health conditions, in particular prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems such as depression.

Men are historically more reluctant to seek advice for medical concerns and as a result may present late with symptoms of illness. We have NHS health checks available for all patients aged 40-74 without pre-existing conditions. These checks include blood pressure, BMI and cholesterol checks, and if you have other concerns then we can arrange further reviews as necessary.

We would also encourage men to seek advice if they have any symptoms that are concerning them, remember - early detection is the most important factor in treating problems so if you notice something is not feeling right, do something about it.

Doctor Update - Dr Kirsty Hewitt (FY2) will be leaving us at the end of November having worked with us for four months as part of her training. She has proved herself an excellent doctor and we wish her well in her future career, which judging by her performance whilst working with us we feel should definitely be in General Practice. Dr Lara Douglass

The Norfolk Churches Trust Bike Ride 2016As you read this the clocks will have gone back and we will be preparing for winter. The long summer has merged into a beautiful autumn and my bike ride seems months ago.

As always the people at each church were very welcoming and encouraging as I pedalled on in wind and rain - visiting 45 churches this year.

I would like to thank everyone who kindly sponsored me, it is a lovely time of year to be out on a bike. My total this year for the Methodist Church, Long Stratton was £153 - a wonderful amount. Once again, many thanks. Judith Naunton.

Long Stratton Guiding2nd Long Stratton BrowniesWe recently had a very enjoyable Owl Sleepover at WinfarthingVillage Hall.

The Brownies said:I loved doing owl orienteering because there were lots of muddle-upsand there were lots of owls to find. We made owl bingo cards. One of my favourite owls was the Spotted Owl.

I have enjoyed baking cakes and making fruit salad. It has been fun doing our Owl hunt and bingo. Everyone enjoyed going to the Park and playing games. I enjoyed the swing best.

Later on we made window decorations and owl bookmarks.

I liked having supper drinks and biscuits.

Last night I got to sleep quite quickly which was a surprise (not all did but they slept in until 6.30am which helped!!)

After breakfast we did a word search and then decorated our owl cupcakes.

Thank you to all the adults who helped and especially Badger who came and cooked us a yummy tea.

Offer your hand for international friendship! Welcome an adult international student into your home for a day, weekend, or 4 days at Christmas, and do your bit to make the world a little friendlier.

Many adult international students from across the world would love to spend a few days with you, learning about British culture, experiencing UK home-life, and telling you about their own country. A Christmas invitation is particularly valuable to students facing a holiday on an empty university campus.

Japanese student, Mamiko Moda, wrote “Thanks to my hosts and their kindness, I could spend a nice Christmas here instead of staying at home alone. I am grateful to you all.”

Hosting is a voluntary position suitable for all ages and is also available throughout the year with HOST, a charity set up in 1987. To find out more or be put in touch with your local organiser, please visit www.hostuk.org, or call 020 7739 6292.

HOST is a charity, founded 29 years ago by the British Council, Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Victoria League, which encourages international friendship and understanding by arranging for adult international students at universities in the UK to spend 1 – 4 days in a British home. Hosting is a wonderful opportunity to meet people from around the world and introduce them to our customs. HOST’s work is even more important at the moment with the recent increase of racist and xenophobic abuse across the UK.

Encouraging international friendship - can you help?

May I send a plea to those whose homes have hedges, trees etc., adjoining narrow pavements especially on busy roads. Recently I narrowly missed scratching my face on an overhanging bramble, with the sun in my eyes it wasn’t easy to see. To step into the road to avoid such dangers would have been foolhardy, what with the heavy flow of traffic these days. PLEASE good people get your shears out and have a go at that foliage! It may well help avoid a nasty accident. Georgina Durrant

Footnote: In the October edition Long Stratton Parish Council also requested people to cut their hedges overhanging the paths.

Would it be possible to put something in the magazine concerning people letting their dogs foul on residents’ front gardens/lawns along Hill Farm Road. It seems to happen after dark and is becoming more regular. There are young children living in the area, and there is a risk of illness to them from the dog mess. As the nights pull in there are

dog walkers who think it’s ok to let their dog off their lead at the end of the estate and mess anywhere, usually on residents’ property. There are many dog owners/walkers who are very responsible and then the few irresponsible ones who do not clear up THEIR dog’s mess. THERE ARE SPECIAL BINS FOR DOG MESS, PLEASE USE THEM.

The council are aware of this and are happy to prosecute. name & address supplied

Learning to Drive Long Stratton Village Hall

Monday 21st November - 1pm

Wendy is a fiery Manhattan author whose husband has just left her for a younger woman; Darwan is a soft-spoken taxi driver from India on the verge of an

arranged marriage. As Wendy sets out to reclaim her independence, she runs into a barrier common to many lifelong New Yorkers: she’s never learned to drive. When Wendy hires Darwan to teach her, her unravelling life and his calm restraint seem like an awkward fit. But as he shows her how to take control of the wheel, and she coaches him on how to impress a woman, their unlikely friendship awakens them to the joy, humour, and love in starting life anew.

Tharston & District WIThe end of September was our 50th birthday, which we celebrated with a party and a mini show of produce and craft. There were quite a lot of entries in each of the 16

classes and all present admired the amount of skill shown. Di Woodham from Long Stratton W.I. judged the food entries: strawberry jam, many cakes, rather a lot of tea loaves and some exquisite sugarcraft. Members judged the craft items and floral art with a 1p put by their favourite item in each class. There was beautiful patchwork, embroidery, knitting, bags, artwork, photography and light-hearted limericks to peruse. Jo Rawlins was the winner of the ‘Best in Show’

trophy for her lovely knitted throw. Cheese and wine was enjoyed as we listened to a singer from ‘Upper Octave’. She had a beautiful voice and sang songs from some musicals and opera.

Many items from our archives and numerous photo albums were on display for members to delve into, reminisce and remember old friends. Tea or coffee and drawing the raffle brought the evening to a close.

The speaker on ‘Granny’s Old Spoons’ published for September, was unable to come so instead we enjoyed a very interesting talk about jewellery from Momatuvi. This is a local brand specializing in making jewellery using real flowers grown within the Waveney valley.

The November 10th meeting is our AGM and a fish and chip supper certainly encourages most members to attend.

Events for December include 1st - a meal at the Jolly Farmers, 8th party for members, 9th Christmas crafting at Wacton VH.
