Engineering Design Project: FLY A KITE!
1) ASK-How can I make a kite using materials from home and test it out?
2) IMAGINE-Watch or Read Kite ideas:
Sled Kite Template https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project-ideas/Aero_p016/aerodynamics-hydrodynamics/fly-a-kite#procedure
Fly a kite: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/blog/doing-fun-science-at-home-activity2-kite-building
Video clip of Mary Poppins “Let’s go Fly a Kite!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA-g8YYPKVo
Kites Field Trip: https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/6ecfb2cb-da4c-44ba-86be-f3f41f12a136/kites-field-trip/
3) PLAN-
Draw a picture of a kite you would like to build. List the supplies/materials you will need to build your kite. Examples: paper, scissors, pencil, crayons, markers, hole puncher, ruler, tape, paper clips, string, plastic
grocery bag, streamers or ribbons, drinking straws, dowel or kabob sticks, paper towel tubes, index cards, etc.
4) CREATE and TEST
Build your kite according to your plan. Take your kite outside and test it by trying to fly it Make observations of how your kite flies Does it have to be windy for your kite to fly?
5) IMPROVE-
Decorate your kite Add a tail to your kite Make a second kite using a different design and/or material and test it out. Make observations of both kites and compare the results.
6) COMMUNICATE/SHARE- I’d love to see what you created!!!
Share your results with your family at home or friends and family online. Take pictures of the process or of your finished project. Post your pictures on our STEM Padlet at https://padlet.com/audriann/holdenSTEM OR Email them to me at [email protected]

“Nature Art”
ART HISTORY: Andy Goldsworthy is a British artist known for his photographs involving natural materials and the passage of time. Working as both sculptor and photographer, Goldsworthy creates art out of rocks, flowers, mud, tree bark, grass, pinecones, leaves, branches, and other things he finds in nature. Goldsworthy always knows that his art is only temporary because wind, rain, or other changes in the land will change his creation. He carefully photographs his nature art to for all to see since he knows it won’t last very long. When asked about his artwork, Goldsworthy says “It's just about life and the need to understand that a lot of things in life do not last.” YOU’RE THE ARTIST: Go outside and gather interesting objects that you find in nature. Choose your outdoor background surface to display your nature artwork, which could be cement, grass, a porch, etc. Arrange your objects in an interesting design on the background surface to create your own Nature Art. Take a picture if you are able to. If you don’t have a camera available, show someone in your home your Nature Art. OPTIONAL: You can post a picture of your artwork using the link or the QR code to the left. If you share a picture of your art with me, be sure to add your FIRST NAME ONLY, grade, and Classroom Teacher’s name.
