2006 Infidels Proprietary Red _______________ 79.992006 Novillero ________________________ 69.99

“The 2006 Novillero is a blend of 96% Syrah, 3% Grenache, and 1% Viognier, all from the Stolpman and Watch Hill vineyards. This complex, forward, sensual, sexy wine exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, abundant quantities of blackberry

and sweet currant fruit, and notions of licorice, smoke, roasted herbs, and a Peking duck-like, smoky note. It should drink well when released and over the following 6-8 years. More herbaceous, cedar, and resiny, the 2006 Infidels is an assemblage of 66% Syrah, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Grenache. Tobacco leaf, Provençal herbs, underbrush, and damp forest floor-like notes are intertwined with hints of sweet cherries and black currants.” Wine Advocate

“Sbragia Family Vineyards is a dream that I’ve had for some time, a small, family-owned winery making limited, indi-

vidual lots of wine from grapes grown in select blocks of my favorite vineyards.” —Ed Sbragia

“Ed Sbragia, the long-time and highly-esteemed winemaker at Beringer, also has his own family operation where he pro-duces 5,000 plus cases of wine, primarily top-notch Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.” Wine Advocate

“Prior to his retirement as chief winemaker a Beringer, Ed Sbragia established his own label with the help of his son, Adam. He produces a range of single-vineyard wines, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon from mountain sites in Napa Valley. He also makes noteworthy Zinfandel from his family’s vineyards in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. His top-performing Cabernet grows at Betty O’Shaughnessy’s Rancho del Oso on Howell Mountain.” Wine & Spirits

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Blank Vineyard ___________ 129.992004 Cabernet Sauvignon Blank Vineyard ___________ 119.992004 Cabernet Sauvignon Blank Vineyard _________ mag. 399.99“With the 2004 Blank Cabernet Sauvignon we have achieved the harmony and balance that has been the hallmark of Grace Family Vineyards for nearly thirty years. This offering captures fully this desired result. The wine is beautifully balanced and it is appropriate to describe the wine as complex, lovely, elegant, and harmonious. The flavor nuances exhibit typical Rutherford district characteristics; black cherry, mint, licorice in subtle and harmonious complexity. We are confident that this wine will compliment those special moments that lay ahead of you, our valued clients.” Ann and Dick Grace 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown and Bottled ______ 324.992005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown and Bottled ______ 339.99“Our winemaker, Gary Brookman, states ‘The 2005 combines the richness and opulence of vintages like 2002 and 2004 with the classic character and backbone of 2001 and 2003.’ Steve Tanzer, in the recent edition of his International Wine Cellar, agreed giving our current offering high praise. We totally concur. Our Vineyards a prominent place in the international world of wine. This vintage displays bril-liant and deep garnet color, complex flavors of cassis, dark cherries, chocolate, and licorice, with an extremely long finish. The tannins are both soft and restrained and yet are more than adequate to ensure decades of life with proper storage. Most importantly the numerous positive characteristics of this wine are presented in a manner that has, over the course of three decades, become the hallmark of Grace Family Vineyards, that being harmony and balance. Is it safe to proclaim this our finest effort to date? We strongly believe the answer to this ques-tion is a resounding YES!” Ann and Dick Grace,

“When Steven Lagier and Carole Meredith settled

on Mount Veeder in 1986 they weren’t looking to

start their own win-ery. Lagier was Mondavi’s grape-supply manager and Meredith was a pro-fessor of plant genetics at UC

Davis. But after a few years on the mountain—and at the urging of one of Meredith’s more famous students, Jean-Louis Chave—they decided to plant Syrah. Their vineyard, about four acres in total, looks south across the Carneros foothills to the San Pablo Bay. Thanks to the cool winds from the Bay, the high altitude and the couple’s meticulous attention to detail (they do everything themselves), this particular site yields one of the most compelling Syrahs in California. It’s consistently fine, an elegant expression of spicy, cool-climate Syrah that’s worth seeking out. And with an already impressive track record, Lagier Meredith is clearly a winery to watch.” Wine and Spirits

Lagier Meredith(napa Valley, CalifOrnia)

“We make only Syrah and we use only our own grapes. Our wine owes its character to the place where the grapes are grown. It is truly a vineyard wine.” Steven Lagier

“In 1998, Bradley Brown used the money he’d tucked away on the software side of Silicon Valley to buy a cattle ranch on the

edge of Big Basin State Park, including some old, abandoned vine-yards. He hired John Alban as a consultant to help him analyze the site and eventually plant 10 acres of Syrah, Grenache and Roussanne. The Syrah clones came from Côte Rôtie via Alban. Grown at 1,400 feet in the midst of the coastal redwood forest, Big Basin’s Syrah ripens to a voluptuous richness, while still maintain-ing cool peppercorn spice and powerful tannin. Brown planted the Rattlesnake Rock Vineyard in 2000. He’s been fermenting the young-vine fruit with native yeast then aging it in 100 percent new oak—creating a wine that’s wild and powerful. More than simple blueberry fruit, there’s meatiness to this wine and black pepper spice. Those cool-climate peppercorn notes are also present in a Syrah Brown makes from Fairview Ranch in the Santa Lucia Highlands. These are untamed wines that still hold a sense of sophistication.” Wine & Spirits

DeLille Cellars(WaShingtOn State)The only winery in the world in the Top 100!Robb Report - Wine Enthusiast - Wine Spectator

-DeLille Cellars-2007 Chaleur Estate Blanc ________________________ 34.9968% Sauvignon Blanc, 32 % SemillonThis year’s Chaleur Estate Blanc has a creamy nose of grapefruit, pineapple, and straw, with toasted almond notes. In the mouth, the Sauvignon Blanc asserts itself, with complex straw and wild herb notes, along with more creamy citrus and Anjou pear flavors. Like all of their Chaleur Estate Blancs, this is delicious now, but can also be aged for further complexities and surprises.

-Doyenne-2006 Aix _________________________________ 34.9964.5% Syrah, 35.5% Cabernet Sauvignon The Aix has a higher percentage of Syrah this year, and bears it out with a nose of wild berries, flowers, lavender and cured meats. The

palate shows the freshness of the 2006 vintage with bright loganberries and orange blossom notes. The structure, while approachable now, promises plenty for the future, with fine-grained tannins and an almost Old World Style acidity that will make it a great guest at the table.2006 Syrah ________________________________ 44.9998% Syrah, 2% Viognier Seductively classic Syrah nose of pomegranate, grilled meats, flowers, and lavender. This wine is outstandingly rich and voluptuous on the palate, with a big black berry core, and earthy notes of lavender, tar-ragon, and spices. The finish is balanced and powerful, a great addi-tion to the cellar.

DeLille’s founders, Charles and Greg Lill, Chris Upchurch, and Jay Soloff, embody the ideal mix of marketing magic and winemaking savvy. Trace the arc of DeLille’s development from a tiny start-up modeled on the best chateaux of Bordeaux

(right down to its second label, named D2 for the highway running through the Médoc) to its present-day portfolio of bril-liantly conceived, unique wines. Encapsulated is the history of Washington’s Evolution from a state dominated by farmer-grow-ers to one dedicated to the highest goals of the true garagiste.

Now one of the state’s premier producers of Bordeaux blends and Rhône-inspired wines (under their Chaleur Estate and Doyenne imprints), DeLille finds itself the name brand that up-and-coming wineries want to be associated with. In contrast to the elegant tasting room and offices, the wines are made in a humble warehouse, nothing charming about it. But what emerg-es from the pristine racks of French oak barrels is pure magic.

The Winery of the Year is selected by a panel of industry judges based on a set of criteria, including longevity, quality, reputa-

tion, industry involvement, facilities and other considerations. A winery may win the award only once. Past Pacific Northwest Wineries of the Year include Elk Cove (2007), Barnard Griffin (2006), Ken Wright (2005), L’Ecole (2004), Sumac Ridge (2003) and Columbia Crest (2002).The Dunham Cellars label was founded in 1995 when winemaker Eric Dunham created the first vintage of his own Cabernet Sauvignon, which upon its release was regarded by Wine Enthusiast magazine as “one of the finest wines made in Washington.” Today, the Dunham family enjoys increased production and continued acclaim from the trade and from the public. The winery is located in a refurbished World War II airplane hangar near the Walla Walla airport, where Eric continues to produce wines of distinction: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sémillon, Riesling, Chardonnay and his own Bordeaux-style blend “Trutina.”

Brick House (OregOn) Pinot Noir Like No Other!

The V ineya rd : Ho l i day 2008

“The world of wines needs more people like Doug Tunnell. Having had a successful career as a television news foreign cor-

respondent, Tunnell returned to his native Oregon and started a ‘farm,’ as he calls it. Certified organic since 1990, Brick House Vineyards produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay Noir (of Beaujolais fame) that have soul. A difficult quality to describe, a wine with soul (or ‘character’ if you prefer), is never squeaky clean (yes, obsessive/compulsive Californian winemakers may find hint of Brett or VA in some of Tunnell’s wines), smells and tastes as though it was made of the land (and not in a lab), and reveals both its terroir and its vintage. Not all wines with soul are successful, but when they are they can be awe-inspiring. Tunnell, a gentle bear of a man, is dedicated to producing soulful wines on his ‘farm’ in a manner that enhances nature, not harms it.” Wine Advocate

-Nonno Zito-With the help of central coast icon winemaker, Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat, the Ambullneo Vineyards group last year introduced their Nonno Zito label of four Italian varietal wines (Tocai, Barbera, Teroldego, and Nebbiolo). All varieties are from their Bien Nacido source except the Teroldego (Gilroy). Production is sadly only 100 cases of each varietal! These wines are crafted from the philosophy that “One can take the grape out of the country, but one cannot take the country out of the grape.” Deft winemaking, applied to cool climate expression of these exquisite varietals yields stunning results. Cal-Itals, as they are called, the wines are exceptional examples of their respective varietals.

Nothing short of a miracle is what these quality oriented, take no prisoners, Burgundy and Italian oenophiles, at Ambullneo

Vineyards have done in 4 short years. Simply stunning wines! Two things are absolutely essential for making great Pinot Noir. First, you have to know what great Pinot Noir is. Secondly, you have to have the knowledge, dedication, vineyard locations, connections, and means, to make it. The same can be said of great Italian wines! Greg Linn and the rest of the visionary Ambullneo Vineyards group are perfecting both!

“ The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as a restrained, linear effort, although it reveals therrific opulence for a vin-tate that is somewhat European in its aromatic flavor and textural profiles. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by rich, sweet, blueberry, blackberry, espresso roast, and toasty oak-like aromas, and surprising elegance and lightness for such a powerful wine. This 2005 should drink well for 10-15 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 92-94/100

2005 El Desafio de Jonata _______________ 129.99“Made from a classic northern Medoc blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (93%) and Merlot as well as Petit Verdot, the 2005 El Desafio de Jonata boasts an inky/purple color as well as a moderately intense nose of forest floor, earth, blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied and powerful, with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, this cuvee builds incrementally on the palate (it is full-bodied), but displays won-derful freshness, vibrancy, and precision. Another tour de force in winemaking, it should drink effortlessly for 15+ years.” Wine Advocate, rated 94+/100Rated 92/100, Steve Tanzer

2005 La Corazon de Jonata (Available Jan 2009) ____ 89.99“The 2005 El Corazon de Jonata (41% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Sauvignon Blanc) is denser, richer, and more perfumed than its 2004 counterpart. The overall impression is one of a sensual/seductive wine boasting an inky/blue/purple color as well as copious amounts of blue, red, and black fruits interwoven with truffle, charcoal, and graphite scents. This full-bodied, powerful 2005 offers both significant flavor authority and elegance. It will last for 15 or more years.” Wine Advocate, rated 94/100 “Strikingly pure and exotically perfumed, with energetic cherry, cassis, tobacco and rose aromas. Dense and chewy but bright, offering wonderfully lucid dark fruit flavors and vivid minerality. Suave licorice and bitter cherry flavors stain the palate and carry through a long, pliant finish. Impressively complex cabernet franc, with enough sweetness for immediate gratification but the concentration and balance to repay cellaring.” Steve Tanzer, rated 93/100

2006 La Flor de Jonata ________________ 79.99“Pungent, honeyed pear and nectarine aromas are brightened by lime zest and fresh herbs. Fresh melon and orchard fruit flavors offer good depth and cut, but no edginess. Finishes round, with

ripe melon and subtle lime flavors. Delivers a lot of complexity, without the strident herbal character of many Sauvignon Blancs.” Steve Tanzer, rated 90/100

N/V La Miel de Jonata _____________ 500 ml 79.99Enticing notes of lemon custard and orange marmalade coin-treau-like nose. Focused sweet flavors of nectarine and candied peaches. Bracing acidity balances out the sweetness and the carmelized flavors seem endless on the finish.

2005 La Sangre de Jonata _______________ 129.99“The 100% Syrah offering, the 2005 La Sangre de Jonata, exhib-its an inky/blue/purple hue along with a stunningly pure nose of melted licorice, meat juices, blackberries, pepper, and a hint of balsamic. It is a wine of extraordinary density, richness, high tan-nin, beautiful purity, laser-like acidity, and superb texture as well as length. This remarkable Syrah is both powerful and elegant. Give it several more years of bottle age, and consume it over the following 10-15 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 94/100“Deep and sweet, with powerful cassis and black raspberry, candied licorice and violet pastille flavors. This reminded me of a big-ticket, single-site Chapoutier Hermitage. The sweetness is reined in by firm mineral and bitter chocolate, but returns on the remarkably long, juicy finish. Pretty amazing for a sophomore effort.“ Steve Tanzer, rated 94/100

2005 La Tierra de Jonata (Available Jan 2009) _____ 99.99“…The 2005 La Tierra de Jonata (93% Sangiovese and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon) continues Jonata’s penchant for producing the finest Sangiovese in California. A deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by a sumptuously rich nose of strawberries, new saddle leather, licorice, roasted herbs, and spice. Expansive, round, and medium-bodied with terrific fruit purity and inten-sity, this amazing wine should drink beautifully for 5-6 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 93+/100

“…this is one of California’s most exciting new wineries…Jonata could turn out to be one of the most promising newcomers to emerge from Santa Ynez in decades.” Wine Advocate

“He’s just released his first wave of wines, which I tasted recently in one of my regular blind tastings. It’s an impressive lineup and considering these are his first wines, from young vines, the potential is there for greatness.” Wine Spectator

“This remarkable Santa Ynez estate is under the same ownership as Napa Valley’s Screaming Eagle winery. While well-known Bordeaux consultant, Michel Rolland, and Screaming Eagle’s winemaker, Andy Erickson, play important roles at Jonata, the people most responsible for the quality of the wines are owners Charles Banks, Stan Kroenke, and winemaker Matt Dees. Jonata’s debut vintage, the 2004s, were somewhat of a work in progress, but the 2005s convincingly established what compelling wines were about to emerge. The 2006s and a handful of 2007 bar-rel samples I tasted suggest this is one of California’s most exciting new wineries. What they are accomplishing with Bordeaux varietals is mind-boggling.” Wine Advocate

“Ben Smith had a perfectly good day job—as an engineer, he worked on flight control systems at

Boeing Aerospace, which afforded him the opportunity to join the Boeing Wine Club. There, Smith focused on Bordeaux varietal wines and blends from top Columbia Valley vineyards. He was pleased when his wines started taking ribbons in the club’s competitions—and mildly embarrassed when, in 1997, four of his wines competed against one other for Boeing’s Best of Show. The following year, he founded Cadence. And while he’s worked with exemplary vineyards all over Columbia Valley, it’s clear that Cadence is centered on Red Mountain. Many of the generous, elegant Cadence wines we’ve praised over the years have been from Ciel du Cheval and Klipsun vineyards (a third vineyard, Tapteil, gained recognition in part because of Smith’s designation). In 2002 he planted his own vineyard on Red Mountain, named for his daughter, Cara. Tending Cara Mia is his new day job.” Wine & Spirits

Pure, vivid notes of black currants, crushed rocks, acacia flowers, and some sub-tle barrique smells are followed by a wine with hints of hot stones and a gravelly character. 2006 La Proportion

Doree “…one would be hard-pressed to find a better Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend than the 2006 La Proportion Doree, which is a blend of two-thirds Semillon and one-third Sauvignon with a touch of Muscadelle added in. Barrel-fermented and aged in wood, there are 580 cases of this wine, which has a gorgeous nose of honeyed figs, lemon grass, melon, and citrus oil. A full-bodied, dry, beautifully textured, superb white Bordeaux look-alike, it should drink well for 5-6 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 94/100

“I just got on the list after having the 06 La Proportion Doree as part of the tasting menu at Alex in Las Vegas this past weekend. A killer wine. Glad to be on the list.” eRobertParker.com

“As mentioned before one of the great non chard whites being made in ALL of California. It is a blend of Semillon and Sauv. Blanc with a smidgeon of Muscadelle. This screams of lemon, and crisp apple flavors with beautifully balancing acidity. It is wrapped in a heavy dry creamy blanket. A must try if you are lucky enough to get it. Under 600 cases made. 95 pts.” eRobert-Parker.com

“I am a big fan of these wines and have tried them on a few occasions. I am really excited about the ‘La Proportion Doree’ as it is so unique and drinks absolutely beautifully.” eRobertParker.com

“Luc Morlet’s first releases under his own label were a revelation…Highly complex aromas of lemon, honey, herbs, white flowers and nuts, plus a sug-gestion of lanolin. Dense and lush but bright; thick yet light on its feet, with complex flavors of grapefruit peel, citrus blossom, spices and herbs. Impressively seamless wine with excellent energy. The Sauvignon and Semillon came mostly from 26-year-old dry-farmed vines in Dry Creek Valley, while the Muscadelle is from Napa Valley vines more than 50 years of age. Morlet told me the blend is roughly ‘an average of the blends of Haut-Brion and Laville Haut-Bion.’ Steve Tanzer, rated 92/100

Luc Morlet grew up working on his family’s domaine, Pierre Morlet &

Fils, in Avenay-Val-d’Or, Champagne. His father, Pierre, is apart of a fifth gen-eration winegrower family. Upon moving to the Napa Valley fourteen years ago, Luc was hired as head winemaker at Peter Michael where he worked from 2000 to 2005. In 2005, his brother, Nick Morlet replaced him at Peter Michael, and he embarked on his own label with his wife Jodie. His winemaking approach is New World, crafting wines less in the French style and more in the California rich and intense mode. “ Pinotfile

“Luc Morlet has been traveling a lot, with his older brother taking over for him at Peter Michael, where he still remains in a quasi-consulting role. He seemed to be settled at Staglin Family Vineyards, but that lasted only a few months, and he is doing what he wants now, producing his own wines. These are the debut releases…up-and-coming new superstar in California…” Wine Advocate

“Well-worth visiting, assuming one can get an appointment, is this exceptionally impres-

sive vineyard and gigantic fortified château-like estate owned by the Blankiets. The vineyards were set up and the early winemaking done by Helen Turley and her husband John Wetlaufer, but they have departed in favor of Martha McClellan (wife of Bob Levy of Harlan estate), and of course the well-known Michel Rolland, who serves as outside consultant. 2005 marks the last vintage where a separate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were produced (I agree 100% with their decision). The Blankiets prefer to go with one proprietary blend, which gives them the opportunity to put together the best possible wine comprised of both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and that’s exactly what they did in 2006. The vineyard is known as Paradise Hills, and that’s an appropriate name for it.” Wine Advocate

After twenty years at the helm of the Stimson Latne wine group (Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia

Crest and other wineries), Allen Shoup retired to pursue a personal dream. For years he had envi-

sioned a joint venture with highly acclaimed winemakers from different regions of the world. His goal

was to bring their expertise to Washington to create some of the most luxurious wines ever crafted from

the region’s fabled viniferous grapes. Wines that stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best.

“Build it and they will come.” Actively encouraged by his associates, including long time friend and

mentor, Robert G. Mondavi, Allen did just that. He invited several of the world’s most venturesome and

exciting vintners to the sunny slopes where the Snake River and the Yakima River flow into the mighty

Columbia. With their enthusiastic support and advice, Allen drew up plans to establish individual win-

eries that would reflect the status and acclaim of each vintner. He named the venture “Long Shadow

Vintners,” in tribute to this select group of individuals, who shape the industry with their benchmark

wines and wineries.

“Something incredible is happening right in our backyard, something that just may be the coolest thing

to happen to wine in this young 21st century…After tasting the first vintages it’s evident many of them

are on par with—and may even surpass—the best wines made in Washington to date.” Seattle

“If Godzilla drank California Cabernet Sauvignon, would there be any doubt as to

what choice it would be? Anyone who has regu-larly tasted Randy Dunn’s Cabernet Sauvignons (first produced in 1979) realizes several things. They all possess the following characteristics: 1) remarkable color and richness. 2) massive personalities with huge tannic structures, and 3) gorgeous purity and unreal aging potential. In 1999, I reported on a tasting where all of Dunn’s top wines back through the 1982 vin-tage were served. Remarkably, they had hardly budged in development, yet they were still exceptionally rich in their pure crème de cassis, black raspberry, and blackberry fruit notes. These are obviously more than 20-25 year wines. It is not far-fetched to suggest that Dunn is producing Cabernet Sauvignons that, in top vintages, will be fresh, lively, and rich in fruit at age 50. Unbelievably, Dunn has barely raised his prices in the two decades he has been making wine. For those with patience, these are among the finest values in long-lived, clas-sic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.” Wine Advocate

“Kudos to DuMOL, one of the brilliant shining stars of the North Coast Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah sweep-

stakes…This is quite a Scottish partnership, with the propri-etor and winemaker pushing the envelope for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah from the Russian River. Their Pinot Noirs, and more recently their Syrahs, take no prisoners either. DuMOL is a great winery that seems positioned to do even better things in the future.” Wine Advocate

“In the past four years, this has become one of my favorite stops on my tasting trip through California’s North Coast. One can’t say enough about owner Kerry Murphy and his talented winemaker Scotsman Andy Smith. Together they have produced a bevy of extraordinary Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, and recently added some full-throttle Syrahs to the portfolio.” Wine Advocate

“Wine Mark Herold is making the wines at this estate, which he considers to have some of the

greatest terroir potential he has seen in Napa Valley. The vineyards are located on Diamond Mountain, in the distinctive micro-climate of the Franz Valley School Road (48 acres protected on three sides by forests). There are three single vineyard offerings…These are impressive newcomers that merit serious attention.” Robert Parker

“Winemaker and part owner, John Kongsgaard, produces these wines in partnership with the

well-known auctioneer, Fritz Hatten. There are approximately 600 cases of the Merlot and Merlot/Syrah blend, and 500 cases of the Cabernet Franc/Merlot proprietary red blend. Readers should not expect the Arietta Merlots to taste like anything made from this grape elsewhere in California. Everything is fermented and aged in 100% new oak, and bottled without fining or filtration.” Robert Parker

“Think of a cult Cabernet, and there’s a good chance that Peterson Barrett is the winemak-

ing hand behind the controls…In the realm of Napa cult wine, Heidi Peterson Barrett is the reigning queen. She makes or has made wine for some of the flashiest, most talked about wineries in California right now, a list that would include Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Jones Family, Grace Family, Vineyard 29, Barbour, Paradigm, Showket, Lamborn, Amuse Bouche and Revana Family. Some of these are well-known; some aren’t yet, but will be. Virtually all of them are highly sought after, impossible to find and very, very expensive… Peterson Barrett spends so much time on her consulting projects that for years her own label, La Sirena (founded in 1994), went almost unno-ticed. ‘Ten years have gone by and a lot of people haven’t heard about it,’ she says, and adds that she’s not much of a self-promoter. With La Sirena she makes less than a thousand cases of Cabernet, Syrah and a tiny bit of Dry Muscat.” Wine & Spirits

Frequent spring rains through the month of May—the wettest May on record—led to a year of cool tempera-

tures and slow ripening. Counted from the day the grape flowers bloom to the first day of harvest, the ripening period was the longest on record for Opus One’s vineyards. Selected cover crops between the vine rows and shorter internodes on the vine canopy (more leaves per shoot length) promoted moderate water stress throughout the summer, leading to balanced vines and healthy grapes. The absence of heat spells from July through October allowed a late harvest that began on September 21st and ended on November 2nd — a full month later than the preceding vintage.

Opus One tends to be remarkably expressive in its early youth, and the 2005 vintage is no exception. A voluptuous garnet, the 2005 Opus One offers concentrated aromas of blueberry, red roses, white truffle, licorice and nutmeg. A silky entry combines with a moderately soft mid-palate to express supple texture and a fine balance of fruit and acidity. Flavors of cassis, black olives, raspberry and dark chocolate culminate in a long and luscious finish. The 2005 Opus One is composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. Component lots received an average of 29 days of skin contact during fermentation and macera-tion, prior to 18 months of barrel aging in new French oak.

“Villa creek is one of my favorite wineries in Paso Robles. Proprietors Cris and JoAnn Cherry

consistently produce lovely wines filled with charac-ter and personality. Moreover, the Cherrys, who maintain a restaurant nearby as well, are notable for their very fair prices, mostly between $12 and $45 a bottle. Perhaps this is because they are also in the restaurant business and understand that wine is meant to be enjoyed with a meal.Wine drinkers should look for the Villa Creek Garnacha (Grenache) made from the Denner Vineyard, located across the street from Saxum Vineyards, as well as the Avenger, a blend of two-thirds Syrah (with the remainder Mourvèdre and Grenache) that is always complex, aromatic, rich and mouth-filling. Other recommended wines include Mas de Maha, made from a blend of Tempranillo and Rhône varietals such as Grenache and Mourvèdre, as well as High Road, a terrific wine that’s predomi-nantly Syrah and Grenache (with the remainder Mourvèdre). Also of note is the Villa Creek Willow Creek Cuvée, perhaps their most sensual and seduc-tive wine, made from roughly two-thirds Grenache (and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre). And last not but least is a lovely rosé, called simply Pink, that’s available only at the Villa Creek restaurant and costs less than $20.” Food & Wine

“In 1999, Joe Gunselman went looking for a place where he could both manage a medical practice and

indulge in a little winemaking as well. On one of the many drives he took in Washington wine country, he was brought to a halt on a stretch of road near Champoux Vineyard. Something about the wind, and the way the loess puffed up around his boots, attracted him to this area on Phinny Hill, what is now part of the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. The Gunselmans ran into growers Dick Beightol and Rob Mercer, and within a few weeks they were making deals on fruit. The following year, they planted their first block on a long-term contract.

It seems they’ve found the right spot. The Robert Karl wines display what the Horse Heaven AVA’a southern reaches have come to be known for: depth, plenty of power and exceptional elegance.” Wine & Spirits

2005 Pinot Noir Rutherford ________________ 57.99“We continue to be mystified at how El Molino always man-ages to succeed with this fussy grape in what is Cabernet territory, but succeed the wine does both in terms of wonder-ful balance and its very deep and well-defined fruit. Smelling of cherries, plums, violets and sweet oaky spice, it unfolds on the palate with lithe, genuinely complex, fruit-and-spice fla-vors that persist on and on at the finish. Its lack of bluster implies no lack of richness, and it will drink famously with veal and lighter lamb dishes over the coming four or five years.” Rated 90/100, Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine

“Ben Papapietro grew up in a family of home wine-makers and wine lovers. He developed a passion for

Pinot Noir early on after tasting a number of Burgundies from the mid-1950s. He struck up a friendship with Burt Williams of Williams Selyem fame while both were working at the San Francisco Newspaper Agency. In the 1970s, Ben was helping Burt make his homemade garage wine and he continued to work each harvest at Williams Selyem after the winery was started in the early 1980s. Ben began making his own homemade wine in 1980 and a few years later was joined by Bruce Perry, another fellow worker at the San Francisco Newspaper Agency. Upon the urgings of family and friends, they started Papapietro Perry in 1998 with an initial release of 75 cases of Pinot Noir. Today they produce well-regarded small lots of Pinot Noir (and Zinfandel) from prime vineyards on the Sonoma Coast and in the Russian River and Anderson Valleys.” PinotFile

The couple’s handcrafted wine is a blend of classic Bordeaux varieties sourced by Geneviève from dis-

tinctive terroirs of Napa Valley. The entire winemaking process at Portfolio, Limited Edition - from grape picking to bottling - is done by hand, crafted at the couple’s petite, “gravity flow” winery. Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, the wine is bottled unfiltered to fully capture the true essence of the grapes, the terroir and the vintage. Naturally handcrafted, the complex nose of the 1999 vintage also reflects deep black currant fruit and a note of toasty, sweet oak. Densely colored with profound extrac-tion and high, fine tannins, the wine maintains a graceful balance; its generosity mirrors the Napa Valley terroir. Geneviève Janssens, a winemaker with a lifelong appreciation for art, was born to a French viticultural family. Geneviève moved to California in 1979 to work at Robert Mondavi Winery as an assistant oenologist. In 1989, she was appointed Director of Production at Opus One, a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild. She was responsible for creating the team, the environ-ment and the program. The wine is now legendary. In 1997 Geneviève became the Director of Winemaking at Robert Mondavi Winery. Currently, she is a key mem-ber of the team developing the To-Kalon project, the largest wood fermenting facility in the world. In her cur-rent role she is responsible for overseeing 24 labels for the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville. In May 2001, the French government awarded Geneviève with one of its highest honors in the field of Agriculture, the prestigious “Croix de Chevalière dans l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole.” She was also honored with

the title of “Commandeur d’Honneur de l’Ordre du Bontemps” in Pauillac, France. Luc Janssens, an artist with a lifelong appreciation for wine, was born in Brussels, Belgium where he graduated with Honors from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. As a printmaker and photographer, he has been involved with photo-etching techniques since the early 1970’s and is today among a handful of artists worldwide practicing the painstaking and beautiful lost art of photogravure.

Walla Walla Vintners, bonded in 1995, is a limited-production winery dedicated to making hand-

crafted, premium red wines --Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cuvee’, Malbec, Merlot, and Sangiovese. The owners and winemakers are Myles Anderson and Gordon Venneri, who celebrated their twelfth anniver-sary of making commercial wine together in December 2007. Over the years, they have assisted other wineries by custom crushing or making wine for Cadence, Spring Valley Vineyards, “K” Vintners, and others. The wines are currently, only distributed in eight states.

2006 Cabernet Franc Columbia Valley __________ 24.99This is the twelfth vintage they have crafted this iconic wine. The 88% Cabernet Franc is blended with 12% Merlot. The centerpiece of this Cabernet Franc is Weinbau Vineyards near Mattawa farmed by Miguel Rodriquez, Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers - Grower of the Year in 2007.

We think Weinbau Vineyard is one of the best Cabernet Franc vineyards in North America providing a Franc that is always elegant and charming, true to the varietal with a toasted brown sugar finish. This is a `gimme some more` Franc that oozes with rich, creamy flavors of sweet spices --- nutmeg, ground allspice, clove and lavender laced Herbs de Provence.

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Sagemoor Vineyard _____ 37.99Sagemoor Cabernet Sauvignon has become their ‘signature’ Cabernet Sauvignon. This well integrated wine contains 79% of old vine Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% each of Malbec and Petit Verdot. This is a classy wine that is age worthy and will bring a lot of pleasure to the collector who loves to cellar magnificent Cabernets. 613 cases produced.

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley _____ 32.99Walla Walla Vintners is prideful of the great `Cabs` they have crafted over the last twelve years and the 2005 is a regal wine containing 79% Cabernet Sauvignon from six wonderful vine-yards: Dwelley, Lefore, Pepper Bridge, Sagemoor, Seven Hills, and Tokar Mill Creek Vineyards. They added 6% each of Cabernet Franc and Merlot and 3% each of Carmenere, Malbec and Petit Verdot to elevate the complexity and round-ness of this royal wine. 731 cases produced.

2005 Washington State Cuveé ______________ 25.99Since 1996 they have crafted a blend of extraordinary vine-yards and wines that they feel belong together. The 2005 edi-tion contains 40% Merlot from Cordon Grove, Killian, Spring Creek and Sagemoor Vineyards; 18% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lefore and Sagemoor Vineyards; 18% Cabernet Franc from Cordon Grove, Sagemoor and Weinbau Vineyards; 9% Syrah from Goose Ridge Vineyard; 6% Malbec from Frazier Bluff; 3% Carmenere from Dwelley Vineyard; 3% Petit Verdot from Frazier Bluff and 3% Sangiovese from Walla Walla Sundance Vineyard. The deep ruby color lets you know that this is a showstopper! It is a balanced heavyweight with layers of exquisite flavors of bright fruits and charming spices with sweet edges. 763 cases produced.

In 1990, Mike was hired to be the Head Winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery. Over the course of the next

nine years, he played a critical role in its development into a world class winery. During his tenure, Chateau Ste. Michelle was consistently recognized for the high quality of their wines. Literally dozens of Januik-made wines have received 90-plus scores in Wine Spectator. (During 1997 and 1998 alone, the Wine Spectator gave eighteen of his wines a score of 90 or above.) In 1999, Wine Enthusiast magazine named Mike one of the world’s ten Masters of Merlot. And twice in the last three years under his guidance, Chateau Ste. Michelle was named Winery of the Year by Wine and Spirits Magazine.

Peay(SOnOma, CalifOrnia)

“When brothers Nick and Andy Peay set out to plant Pinot Noir on the Pacific coast, they searched for

land in California and Oregon, using USGS maps to pin-point breaks in the coastal range. They found a clearing above a bend in the Gualala River near Annapolis and planted 30 acres of vines in 1998; later Nick moved to Annapolis with his wife, Vanessa Wong, who had been the winemaker at Peter Michael, and they planted another 18 acres in 2001. Given their location four miles from the sea and 700 feet in elevation, they focused mainly on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with a small amount of Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne. It’s the Rhône varieties that have stood out among the young vines, with a fragrant, litchi-scented Viognier and the two selections of Syrah. In ‘04, the bright, floral lift of La Bruma Syrah has a slight edge, emphasizing freshness with pure black raspberry flavors. In

‘05, it’s Les Titans, with a meaty richness and power that looks smarter as a young wine. Decant the ‘05 Pinot Noirs and they look pretty smart as well—deep, rich wines bal-anced by the freshness of the coast.” Wine & Spirits

Versant Estate is on Pritchard Hill, above Oakville, along the eastern mountains of the Napa Valley: elevations at

1300-1500 feet. It was planted in 1997 on 31 acres of hillside in rocky, red-clay loom, with south and west facing slopes - all estate fruit, family owned. It is with great pleasure that Brown Derby introduces the highly anticipated 2005 Versant Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage was blessed with almost perfect growing conditions and produced grapes of extraordinary flavor and concentration. They are fortunate to be working with renowned winemakers Randy & Debbie Lewis of Lewis Cellars who share their passion for crafting highly extracted powerful wines.

“With the skill, experience, and passionate pur-suit of greatness, Lynn Penner-Ash created

and continues to produce with our family one of the finest Dundee Hills Pinot Noirs. Perhaps a little less known is our vineyard manager, Andy Humphrey. Lynn and Andy’s unified goal is to produce the best fruit possible from our sites, as always contingent on what nature, climate, and soil allow.” John Carter, proprietorLynn Penner-Ash drafts this delicious Pinot from some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Oregon, in the newly created Dundee Hills AVA. The production on

this wine is so small that apparently none has submit-ted to the major reviewers for rating, but having tasted the wine, I can attest to its quality. This is very elegant Pinot, medium ruby in color, with floral and charred cherry aromas, a soft mouthfeel of strawberry, char-coal, and earth, and fine but substantial tannin. The Brown derby consensus on our most recent sam-ple tasting is 92 points.

“As I reported las year, Les Behrens and his wife, Lisa, purchased the interest of their

partner, Bob Hitchcock, and the name Behrens and Hitchcock will be history after the following 2004s are released. Under the new name, Erna Schein (Les Behrens’ mother’s name), the goal will be to produce more limited, but also more interesting cuvées. Beginning with the 2005s, all the wines will be released under the Erna Schein label, and production is unlikely to exceed 3,000 cases. As I have written many times, this is a fun place to visit…a hippy commune on top of Spring Mountain where everyone does what they want, and has a heck of a good time while they do it. This tiny production Pinot is pure and bright, with aromas of fresh plum, vanilla, and a hint of some-

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon _________________ 129.99 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon _________________ 119.992003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Etched) ________ mag. 399.99After tasting literally dozens of bottled 2002 and 2003 Cabernet and proprietary blends from Napa’s most elite properties, our staff concluded that two really stood out. The 2002 Harlan Estate (rated 100/100 by Robert Parker) and the 2003 Barbour Cabernet Sauvignon (not yet rated). Unfortunately, our 2002 Harlan Estate allocation will be quite miniscule and there is already a waiting list. However, we were able to capture a few cases of the beautifully made 2003 Barbour Cabernet Sauvignon. Act now as only 285 cases were produced by winemaker Heidi Barret.

2002 Cabernet Sauvignon _________________ 119.99The 2002 Barbour Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is repre-sentative of both Jim’s St. Helena vineyard, and winemaker Heidi Barrett’s style. The vineyard, planted with Grace Clone 7, continues to mature nicely. After 23 months in French oak barrels, it is drinking beautifully. The wine is deep ruby in color, with a nose of dark, sweet fruits and hints of coffee and spice. It has a lush, layered mouthfeel, beginning with some muscle but then softening to show intriguing notes of mocha, tar, spices and even some citrus, ending with a blast of fruiti-ness. “One of the flagship properties in the Jackson Family Farm empire…The winery seems to go from strength to strength, producing wines of extraordinary power,

2003 Cardinale _______________________________________ 139.99“The brilliant 2003 Cardinale, from Jess Jackson’s vineyards on Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, Stag’s Leap, and the Oakville corridor, is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot. It boasts an inky/pur ple color as well as a beautifully perfumed nose of creme de cassis smoke, cedar, licorice, and spice box. A sweet, expan-sive, full-bodied attack is followed by impressive purity, elegance, and concentration as well as layers of flavor and ripe, well-integrated tannin. It can be drunk now or cel-lared for 15+ years.” Robert Parker, rated 95/100

2002 Cardinale _______________________________________ 149.99“The extraordinary 2002 Cardinale (88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot from vineyards Mount Veeder, Keyes, and To-Kalon) was aged in 100% new French oak. This inky/purple-colored Pauillac-styled red boasts notes of cedar wood, licorice, and black currants along with a smoky, ripe, full-bodied palate impression, terrific concen-tration, sweet tannin, and multiple layers. It should hit its peak in 2-4 years, and last through 2020.” Robert Parker, rated 95/100

Hamacher wines is a one-man operation. Eric Hamacher has a degree in oenology an viticulture from UC

Davis. More importantly, he has 16 harvests of experience ranging from cellar rat to chief winemaker at such well known facilities as Chalone and Etude in California. This is his fledgling solo project. Given the quality of his first vintages and his enthusiastic following, this is a winery to watch and support early on.

Eric’s best results come from managing the vineyard, using wild yeasts, malolactic bacteria and minimal handling. To achieve his goal of making wines with elegance, richness and complexity, he blends wines made from eleven differ-ent vineyard sources in the Willamette Valley. His Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are encouraging examples of the more Burgundian style coming out of Oregon.

The rating and wine description follows.“The Reininger Winery is a small (4,000 cases) operation specializing in wines produced from Walla Walla Valley fruit. Chuck Reininger, its winemaker, is a former mountaineering guide (his office is adorned with photographs of him peril-ously hanging from cliffs thousands of feet above where nor-mal people dwell) who has found that producing wines also allows him to commune with nature. Stylistically, Reininger’s wines stand out in Walla Walla as they are not highly extract-ed, powerfully concentrated, and massively oaked. To create a Cabernet Sauvignon that will reflect superior Napa Valley quality and express the origins of the grapes used to make the wine. This blend of 79% Morisoli Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Herb Lamb Cabernet Sauvignon again defines the unique style of the Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is forward and up-front, giving way to complex, rich, well-structured Cabernet. Dark in color, with generous and forward aromas of black currant, black cherry, spice and bit-tersweet chocolate. The flavors are unblushing and densely packed, showing plenty of fruit and flavor for graceful aging. It will only improve with time.

“If you want the wines made by our Oregon Winery to watch, you might want to hurry.

Privé Vineyard near Newberg is perhaps Oregon’s smallest winery at 250 cases, and it’s quickly becoming one of the state’s most exclusive. Under the direction of wife-husband team winemaker Tina Hammond and viticulturalist Mark Hammond, Privé Pinot Noir is gaining high acclaim. At last year’s Northwest Wine Summit, the largest judging of Northwest wines, the Privé 2001 Le Nord Pinot Noir earned Best Oregon Wine. And that was the Hammonds’ first release. Word of the wines traveled fast. The first vintage sold out in six months, the second in two weeks. Now, everything goes quickly on futures, and there isn’t even enough for wine shops. Just three restaurants get Privé for their lists: the Dundee Bistro, Joel Palmer House in nearby Dayton and The Herbfarm in Woodinville, Wash… Their house and winery sit in the midst of the vineyards, which are called Le Nord (North) and Le Sud (South)

Le Nord is about 75 feet higher in elevation and results in 170 cases of wine by the same name. It sees 100% French oak—30% new… ‘It’s got an unusual personality,’ Tina said. ‘It’s an ele-gant Pinot Noir with nice layers and complexity. It’s our crowd-pleaser.’ The lower vineyard, Le Sud, ripens a bit earlier, but the grapes are allowed to get ever-so-slightly riper, and the wine sees 100% new French oak.” Andy Perdue, Wine Press Northwest

For 18 years, The Terraces has been a family winery pro-ducing small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.

They are proud of their history, their vineyards and their wines.

The Zinfandel is aged for approximately 18 months in both American and French oak with about 35% new for each vintage. The Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in 40% new French oak for 30 months. They bottle age the wines for a minimum of 6 months and often longer. Their style is often described as “claret” like. They strive for balance but work to insure tannic structure and acid levels that will make the wines food friendly and age worthy.

“This artisanal producer tucked away on the steep hillsides of spring mountain continues to fashion some of the

most concentrated, inky Cabernet Sauvignons in California. Togni, assisted by his daughter, Lisa, boasts an extraordinary résumé, having produced outstanding wines at Chalone in the mid-1960s and Chappellet in 1969. “The California outpost of the Moueix family (in this case winemaker and

manager of Château Petrus and other luminary estates in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, Christian Moueix), Dominus is celebrating nearly twenty years in Napa Valley. Christian Moueix has to be pleased with what he has achieved. First of all, he owns one of northern California’s historic vineyards. Even wines from vin-tages about which he is less than enthusi-astic (1983 through 1989) have brilliantly stood the test of time, and show no signs

of following apart. His greatest wines to date have been the colossal 1991 and 1994, but he has hit the bull’s eye with an extraordinary 2002 and impressive 2003. And, let’s not forget the muscular, high octane 2001. These wines are singular in character, tasting incredibly French-like, especially when inserted in a tasting with other wines from Napa Valley. It’s a notable achievement to produce a wine with such com-plexity and Bordeaux-like character. These are natural wines all domi-nated by Cabernet Sauvignon with tiny portions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, although the winery seems to be losing patience with Merlot as they are replanting virtually all of their Merlot with old Inglenook clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, which they feel perform better in the Napa soils and micro-climates. One of the other changes instituted at Dominus began in 2001 when they moved to the traditional basket press.” Wine Advocate

was still working as a software developer. The huge success he enjoyed among his mailing list customers, who quickly recog-nized his dedication to serious winemaking from old vineyard sites, allowed him to abandon his software career to become a full-time owner and winemaker. These are all big, but incred-ibly well-balanced, fresh wines. Officer is not afraid to push ripeness to the edge, but, remarkably, the wines are never over the top, revealing tremendous textures, aromatics, and ripe-ness. “Ridge has been a reference-point winery for so many years, one would think they have been around for

centuries. In fact, their history began in 1886, when an Italian doctor purchased over 180 acres on top of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Prohibition put an end to that period of history, but in 1959, some of the original vineyard was purchased by the founders of the mod-ern-day Ridge Vineyards. The first commercial vintage was 1962, and the current winemaker, Paul Draper, arrived in 1968. Ridge boasts an almost unbroken record of 40 years of fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a bevy of terrific Zinfandels, The Chardonnay program has gone from strength to strength, producing better and better wines. This is unde-niably one of California’s top wineries. Ridge now controls over 500 acres of vines, from which they produce just under 100,000 cases of wine. Despite the winery’s sale to the Japanese Suntory Company, the quality is unchanged. The wines are a profound as ever.” Wine Advocate

on fire with the extraordinary Syrahs they have produced from largely unknown sites. As I have stated before, Pax Mahle is a natural…This is artisinal winemaking based on finding blue chip terroirs and then contracting with the growers for quanti-ties of grapes by acre, not by tonnage, the use of various per-centages of stems as well as new oak for each cuvée, natural yeast fermentations, and no fining or filtration at bottling.” Wine Advocate

Production is extremely small, with an emphasis on small lots of handcrafted single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and Syrahs. They are all worth the effort to find and drink.” Wine Advocate

The 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is blended from the Bela Vida and La Colina Vineyards in the Dundee

Hills and the Croft Vineyard in the Eola Hills. The wine was aged for 16 months in all french oak (25% new) and was bottled unfiltered. This is quoted from a local Oregon retailer“Like many 2006’s this is very expressive, friendly and deeply alluring with dark sappy sexy fruit, good structure and this irresistible mouthwatering tangy acidity that pulls your palate along, like dragging your taste buds through a salad bar of Pinot Noir flavors. We taste a lot of Oregon Pinot Noir, many are nice sure, but so few in this price range offer the intensity, flavorpack (like snow pack but better) and pure Pinot flavors like this.”

wines are known to be a little austere on release and take a number of years to blossom. Rich nose tending toward prune with a little funkiness. Beautiful soft texture. Fine-grained tannins and a touch of oak grace a lingering finish.” Pinotfile

“As the Napa Valley did 30 years ago, Washington wine country is attracting young, experimental winemakers,

such as 37-year-old master sommelier Greg Harrington, who left his Manhattan restaurant post a few years back to open Gramercy Cellars in Walla Walla. “In California, they can make good syrah. But in Washington, they can make great syrah.” Harrington had told us in his sommelier days. Indeed, the impressive debut of his 2005 Gramercy Cellars Walla Walla Valley Syrah ($40) and 2005

Gramercy Cellars Lagniappe Columbia Valley Syrah ($32 won Gramercy notice in Seattle Magazine this year as the state’s best new winery. Harrington was cited as best new winemak-er.” The Washington Post

Beaux Freres(OregOn)

The 2006 vintage is a beautiful year of ripeness, and the 2006 Beaux Frères Vineyard shows the exceptional

maturity of the grapes and the tannins. Deep ruby/purple-tinged to the rim, with a sweet, ripe nose of black raspberry, kirsch, with some underbrush and spice notes (any evidence of new oak casks is completely obscured by the wine’s fruit). The wine cuts a broad savory path on the palate and has rela-tively elevated glycerin and sweet fruit which tends to obscure and hide the significant tannin. This is a very full-bodied, powerful style but also has a seamless integration of fruit, acidity, wood, tannin and alcohol. It’s a beauty and can be drunk young, although we envision this wine hitting its peak in 5-7 years and lasting for 15-20. It is the sexiest, most hedonistic wine from this vineyard site to date. For that rea-son, we think it is among the finest wines they have ever produced.

“Made by Sashi Moorman, the winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards, this 100% Syrah emerges from the limestone-based Harrison/Clark Vineyard. Fermented in Taransaud barrels and bottled with no fin-ing or filtration, the 2004 Syrah is a deep, rich wine offering loads of smoky blackberry and cassis fruit as well as hints of creosote, tar, and incense. This heady, opulent 2004 can be drunk young or cel-lared for 7-8 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 92/100

All sales are subject to applicable Missouri state and any city sales taxes. All wines listed in this catalog are subject to availability. However, fine wines are not produced on a large scale. Many vintage wines are limited in availability and, when they go out of stock, are usually not replaceable. New vintages and other similar wines replace those that are no longer available. All of our wines are stored in a climate-controlled environment, and we take great care in checking the condition of the wine we purchase. However, as is tradition in the wine trade, all bottles over 10 years old, are at the buyer’s risk. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, but in the event of a misprint, the price posted in the store will prevail. Delivery: We use several ground carriers. For a normal ground shipment, allow 8 to 10 days to receive your order after it has been processed. Ground Rates are better for six or more cases shipped to one location. Please inquire about rates for all shipments, as they are based on weight and delivery location. On all residential deliveries, there will be a $2.00 upcharge. The purchaser is responsible for the claim of damage or loss once the product leaves our premises. Note: Starting July 1st, 2002 all purchases will automatically be charged 1% of the total purchase for insurance. Please be aware that claims are difficult due to the myriad of alcohol transport regulations. We reserve the right to hold wine orders up to 90 days before shipping as a quality control measure. Wine can be damaged by temperature extremes. We will not ship if the temperature in our area is above 75 degrees or below 40 degrees. It is your responsibility to advise us what temperatures are in your area. We cannot be held responsible if you request shipment and the wines travel in a climate outside an acceptable temperature range. We will hold and store wine purchases up to 30 days. After that time a $3.00 per case per month charge will be automatically assessed. Any cancellations are subject to a 10 percent restocking penalty. Occasionally, irreplaceable bottles will be broken in shipment or somehow mishandled in the delivery system to us. In the event any wines do not arrive, or are damaged in shipment to us, or are damaged by us prior to shipment to you, we will make every effort to substitute, subject to your approval, wines of equivalent value. Should we be unable to make an acceptable substitution, we will then refund your payment together with 5 percent simple interest.
