The Outstanding, Long Standing Traditional Holiday Party

On December 20th Santa is once again visiting the Southern California North Pole on Outrider Road in beautiful Rolling Hills. Our Chairlady and accomplished hostess Karen Perrault is waiting to greet you and has her home decorated with numerous versions of Santa Claus, nutcrackers of every size and description, a huge Christmas tree with beautiful decorations and giant ornaments on the front lawn in celebration of the season. How can we not be in the mood for Christmas with all of the holiday splendor that awaits us?

We are hoping that El Nino will favor us with beautiful sunny weather and panoramic views of the mountains and clear blue sky. Or perhaps it will be cold and rainy – perfect weather to set the mood for a fabulous holiday. We have experienced all sorts of weather in the ten years that Karen has been hosting our holiday party, but never once has the weather interfered with the rollicking good time that was had by all.

There will be mini-Concours in the driveway with prizes for the most festively decorated Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Last year, members brought a life-size Santa that stood beside their car to greet passers-by. Lights, wreaths, ribbons, garlands, bells, angels, Christmas trees, stuffed holiday creatures – all have graced beautiful PMCs in years past. You are limited only by your imagination and the California vehicle code.

There will be the competition for the most festively dressed lady and gentleman with surprise awards for the winners. We will, of course, have the RROC So Cal version of the melodic (or not) “Twelve Days of Christmas” where we divide into groups and create our versions of each stanza. Connie Dwoskin holds the record for the highest note reached in our version of the song.

The unpredictable and raucous gift exchange just cannot be missed. This beloved tradition continues and as always, don’t get too attached to your gift because you may not have it for long. Please do not spend more than $30 per couple for your gift item and please note; you do not have to spend anything, because this is the one time that re-gifting is perfectly acceptable. Just make sure it is Holiday Grand, funny, cute, adorable, practical, valuable, or maybe just highly exchangeable.

Lisa’s Bon Appetit is returning this year to cater the delicious lunch. They were new to us last year and are returning due to our rave reviews. You have your choice of tender Roast Prime Rib with baked potato or Grilled Herb Salmon with Rice Pilaf, both with vegetables, salad and rolls. Of course there will be yummy dessert bars with either lunch choice.

The cost for this fabulous party is only $45 per person. But there is limited seating space at the Southern California North Pole, which requires a limit of 60 persons for this event. So decorate your PMCs and yourself, get your holiday spirit on and come join us for our celebration of the holidays.

Date: Sunday, December 20, 2015Time: 11:00 a.m. Host: Karen Perrault (310)519-0536Where: 18 Outrider Road, Rolling Hills, CA 90274

DECEMBER 2015

When I arrived, the condition of the car was better than in the online pictures. It had full service history from Symbolic Motors in La Jolla, newer tires, impeccable leather, perfectly finished wood trim, four keys, and even the infamous cabin air filters had been replaced on a regular basis. This was the car...but the price! I set aside my emotions as best I could and held steady when the salesman took me to “chat“with the sales manager. I tried to keep cool, as I knew I was up against a professional that negotiates for a living and does this multiple times per day. Still, I held firm and stayed true to Andrew’s advice.

In the end, and to my surprise, the dealer met my price. After months and months of searching, my Seraph quest was finally fulfilled. Now it was time to find a place to park the Seraph. Rent a garage? Rent a storage locker? Oh, but wait...they have websites for that too.

The Cover StoryBy Sanford Doi

As many car enthusiasts can attest, one of the greatest pleasures of the automotive hobby is the search for that elusive “perfect” car. The Internet has opened the doors to searching all over the country, or all over the world if you dare, for that vehicle in the perfect color, with just the right number of miles and at a reasonable price. If you’re also searching for certain equipment or options, that makes the search even more complex. Utilizing multiple websites such as Autotrader and eBay, it is easy to scavenge the entire country with just a few keystrokes on a computer, all while sitting at home. Let’s face it, the U.S. covers a huge geographic area and many times it plays out that the search found what appears to be the perfect car, only to find it’s all the way across the country in Florida or the eastern seaboard. Compounding the issue are the logistical issues with finding a car that is 3,000+ miles away, such as the inspection, possible rust and body damage, the test drive, the possibility of scams, making the payment, getting the title documents, and finally, shipping it home.

After searching for months and months, my online search finally located what appeared to be my perfect PMC—a 1999 Rolls-

Royce Silver Seraph (LAX-01741) in Silver Tempest with Oatmeal and Autumn hides. And the car was local. What? Not in Miami? Not in Dallas? No, it was just a short drive away. I contacted the dealer and the car was still available. But the price...a bit more,

actually quite a bit more, than I wanted to pay, but fellow RROC member Andrew Dunn encouraged me to go see the car. “It’s so close, and it can’t hurt to go see it” he said. Still, the pricing issue concerned me, but armed with his advice that I should not be concerned with how much the dealer would come down on their price, but instead to focus on what I wanted to pay, I headed out, nervously.

Why Do My Lifters Make Noise?by Ronny Shaver, Technical Chairman

I recently had a 1970 Corniche Coupe towed into the shop with a customer complaint of a noise in the engine. When I started the car I heard the common Rolls-Royce lifter “ticking” noise initially, which went away after a few seconds. Then I waited. The engine sounded fine but after a couple of minutes the lifter noise came back and seemed to get louder the longer it ran. Not good. The car doesn’t have an oil pressure gauge but did have a warning light, which wasn’t displayed. I turned the car off and checked the oil level; it was fine. Then I turned the ignition on to check the warning light operation and no warning light. Another bad sign. I lifted the car and inspected the oil pressure sending unit to make sure the wire was connected but found no wire anywhere near the sending unit. Hmmm.

I also found the oil pan (sump) dented badly enough to be pushed up against the oil pump pick-up. See the photo below

If you look closely, the drain plug is cockeyed and the middle of the pan is pushed up. It is hard to see in this photo but near the center of the pushed up area a small dimple protrudes downward indicating the pan is pushed right up to center bolt of the oil pump pick-up screen. Not a good sign. Many of these early Shadows (especially neglected or under-serviced cars) accumulate a layer of sludge in the sump which can build up high enough to block oil from being picked up at the screen. From the looks of the undercarriage of this car, “proper” servicing was not a priority. So taking the lack of servicing and the obvious damage to the oil pan into consideration, a closer inspection was required.

I contacted the customer and discussed removing the oil pan for inspection and also tracking down the reason for no oil pressure light. Once the oil pan was removed I found a granular sludge and some very thick black oil. (See below)

If you look in the circle below the windage tray (extra baffle to help reduce foaming on the bottom of oil pan) there is a pile of the granular sludge I found. When the sludge was rubbed between the fingers, it felt like little chunks of metal. Not good but not really worth addressing at this point and as we will see later, not an issue for this old car.

I cleaned the sump and used a block of wood and also a large blunt punch to carefully straighten out the bottom of the oil pan. As you can see in the photo, the windage tray doesn’t really allow access to the entire

bottom, but one can still straighten enough to get proper clearance. One important thing to watch out for is the bung (sleeve that the drain plug screws into) for the drain plug. It is pressed into the bottom sheet metal and if one is not careful with the hammer and punch, it will leak after re-filling the sump. I found this out the hard way once and had to lay a weld around the bung to repair it. Another thing I found, which can cause air to be sucked into the oil pump causing low oil pressure, is that the tube between the oil pick-up pedestal and the oil pump was loose and could be easily spun with the fingers. This indicates old hard o-rings, which can allow air into the oil pump, especially if the pick-up screen is blocked in any way. The oil pick-up pedestal was removed, screen cleaned and o-rings replaced and refitted.

Once re-assembled, the oil filter was replaced along with the old oil pressure sending unit (original and a bit beat up) and the oil pressure warning light tracked down and correctly attached. A previous mechanic had incorrectly routed it to the carburetor micro-switch on the opposite side of the engine. Brilliant. The car was started and after the initial lifter “ticking”, quietened down very nicely with no more noise.

One important thing to address here is to make sure that the warning light operates if the car has no oil pressure gauge. The engine noise this customer was hearing was caused by low oil pressure, but his warning light didn’t come on to warn him. Those of us in the auto repair industry call it an “idiot light” for the simple fact that if someone drives their car with the oil pressure light on, they must be an idiot. But in this case, the light WASN’T on so does that mean that someone WAS home? OK, enough of my foolish humor. Enjoy the Holidays!

Thanks from the EditorBy Dori Olsen

2015 has been a very interesting year! I moved to Texas and settled in to a totally new community, which is very different from California but equally enjoyable. The gulf is 200 miles away but we have two rivers running through the town and there are many activities, due in large part to the fact that it’s a college town. Austin is a hop, skip and jump away and I love the bumper stickers “Keep Austin Weird.” Any concerns about being able to continue to edit the newsletter were resolved almost immediately, thanks to the support and co-operation of all of my California So Cal friends. I particularly want to thank and acknowledge all of those members who have helped me so greatly during the year.

Karen Perrault for her monthly column, her photos of events and for always being there when I need information, a sanity check or a second set of eyes.

Larry Ewaska for planning the monthly events, for always keeping me apprised of the details, providing photos and following up so tenaciously for articles and any additional information that I need.

Ronny Shaver for his monthly column “Ask Ronny” and updates on his monthly tech seminars.

Steve Power-Fardy for his articles and videos of the tech meets, his photos and special interest articles. At last count he had videos of 45 technical topics on the website.

Gene Towle for his tremendous success in obtaining new ads to support the cost of the newsletter. Without him, we wouldn’t have a 12 page newsletter. He is the club’s unsung hero.

Pierre Lemieux for providing new member information, special interest articles and the wonderful photos of the RREC Rally in England.

Nancy Ratinoff for writing articles, obtaining photos and information for interesting covers, for her advice and her extraordinary talent for re-working articles.

Richard Dorsey for generously sharing his many photographs of events and for taking an incredible amount of time to write captions for the photos from the Art Astor Collection that captured perfectly what was going on in the photo.

I also want to thank these wonderful members, in no particular order, who took the time to take photographs, write articles, make suggestions, etc. and generally make my job so much easier!

Gary Moore, Brock Backlund, Willy and Joan Hugron, Diane Cerveny, Gary Mantey, Fulton Haight, Tom Warden, Bill Sundin, Gary and Melissa Oakland, Bob Dryden, Gerard Smith, Nuria Lledo and Sanford Doi.

The newsletter is truly a group effort and wouldn’t be possible without all of your help.

And finally, thanks to all of you, our members, who take the time to read the newsletter. Have a beautiful holiday and an outrageously wonderful 2016!

The RROC So Cal Region Awards Event

Bali Hai – You are Calling – Come to Me, Come to Me

What better way to escape the January let-down after the holidays than to spend a lazy afternoon at the water’s edge enjoying luau-type food (Kahlua Pork and Teriyaki Chicken), a no-host bar with tropical drinks and celebrating the hard work of our members on their beautiful PMCs. Our annual Awards Event will be held at the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro on January 23rd, hosted by our chairlady and hostess par excellence Karen Perrault.

Located right on the water’s edge, this beautiful yacht club had the distinct honor of being selected as the recipient of the Southern California Yachting Association’s prestigious “Senior Yacht Club of the Year” award in 2014. For over 75 years Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club has been sponsoring yacht racing and yachting activities in and about the waters of Southern California and will be a wonderful location for us to celebrate the winners of the 2015 awards. Spectacular trophies, including the perpetual trophies, will be presented to the winners of the Best Restored Rolls-Royce and Bentley awards, the Most Improved Rolls-Royce and Bentley awards, the event hosts, awards to the board member and non-board member who made outstanding contributions during 2015 and to the member who drove their 6 cylinder PMC to the most events during 2015. So think about sunny skies, total relaxation beside the water, beautiful scenery, wonderful food and drink and surprise entertainment – how could you possibly miss this event? Mark your calendars and see the January issue of The Spirit of Ecstasy.
