Attitude of Gratitude: Why Thankful People Are Successful People

by Jared Brox on October 31, 2016 in Inspiration and Motivation, Leadership and Management

Legendary author and motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said “gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.” We all know people who are eternally positive. They relish the opportunity to start a new day and always take on any challenge that comes their way with grace and optimism. And in return for the thankful vibes they put out into the world, good fortune is often bestowed upon them. So, what exactly is it about thankful people that makes them wired for success? They have a loyal following.Leaders who are genuinely thankful for the talent, work ethic, and commitment of the people they lead and make a conscious commitment to show it, have a devoted following of employees who will always be willing and prepared to follow them into battle.According to a Harvard Health Publications article that summarized the findings of several studies on gratitude, “Managers who remember to say ‘thank you’ to people who work for them may find that those employees feel motivated to work harder.” Recognition is a powerful motivator that can build em-ployee retention and increase productivity; however, a lack thereof can have an equally negative effect. Results from a 2013 Gallup survey revealed only 45% of men and 50% of women are satisfied with the recognition they receive at work for their accomplishments. If an employee is putting in long hours and going beyond the call of duty to achieve company goals, but feels their extra effort is going unnoticed by their leaders, what motivation do they have to maintain that level of work? They are healthier in mind, body, and spirit.Robert Emmons, Ph.D., a leading scientific expert on gratitude at the University of California, Davis, asked patients suffering from severe neuromuscular disorders to keep a journal of the things in their lives that make them feel grateful. When he checked in with the group after two weeks of journaling, he discovered something incredible: “…not only did they find reasons to be grateful, but they also experienced significantly more positive emotions than a similar group that didn’t keep a gratitude journal. The gratitude group also felt more optimistic about the upcoming week, felt more connected to others (even though many of them lived alone), and reported getting more sleep each night—an important indicator of overall health and well-being.”Thankful people not only have healthier relationships with others, but they also experience healthier relationships with themselves. Being comfortable with ourselves and thankful for the things in our lives that bring us joy leads to a more optimistic outlook. And optimism is one of the most important character-istics of successful people. They’re masters of perspective.Even in the most challenging of situations, thankful people have the ability to recognize the good. They see the silver lining and rather than being discour-aged by adversity, they are energized by the opportunity they’ve been given to step into the unknown and blaze a new trail forward. And although they’re not by any means immune to failure, because of their optimistic disposition, they’re better equipped to learn from and respond to it.“One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn’t pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself.” – Lucille BallThe ability to be thankful for what you have achieved and to put challenges that arise in the proper perspective goes hand in hand with success.Developing an attitude of gratitudeFrom making lists of the people and things that make you feel thankful to shedding yourself of toxic relationships or situations, embracing an attitude of gratitude is achievable for anyone willing to try. 4 South Holland Business AssociationNOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

Did you know that your success as a business owner and/or professional is predicated on your ability to communicate? If not, you must not have attended the South Holland Business Association’s (SHBA) October 27, 2016 networking luncheon because that was the focus of my presentation on business communication.

Whether you are aware of it or not, effective communication can be a catalyst for success and ineffective communication can be an impediment to the achievement of goals.

Your communication reputation, which is based on the words that you use, your delivery, the thoughts that you convey and how well you listen, can impact your ability to influence, lead, and be respected by others. Here are some of the tips that I shared that can help to enhance your communication reputation:

1. Be an active listener.2. Maintain an open mind.3. Demonstrate confidence.4. Observe how other people communicate.5. Think about what you say and how you say it.6. Ask for feedback on your communication skills.

Just like your communication reputation is important to your personal success, there is a strong link between internal and external business communication and organizational performance. Management’s ability to communicate with employees is crucial for conveying information, giving feedback, building trust and credibility, and providing motivation. Communicating effectively externally builds public goodwill, fosters positive relationships, and enhances corporate image. Here are some tips for enhancing internal and external business communication:

1. Share information openly.1. Create channels for consistent communication.2. Identify the needs and interests of each stakeholder.3. Periodically assess effectiveness of communication methods.4. Determine what information must be communicated to each group.

Members and guests were given a communication audit check list to enable them to assess the effectiveness of their personal communication skills and communication practices within their businesses/organizations. If you have any questions about this topic or my presentation, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 708-304-3151.

After this my presentation, the program segued into a networking activity in which teams were given the names and description of services/products for 10 SHBA member businesses. They honed their communication skills by creating a story that included all of the business. Here’s an example of one of the stories:

This morning we had our taxes done at G & V Tax and Insurance. We headed to the First Merchants Bank because we had to pay our taxes. Then we went to Flowers and Gifts by Michelle to buy some flowers for Grandma who is staying at Windmill Nursing Pavilion. We left Windmill to pick up Grandma’s prescription at Walgreens. Then we stopped at Express-Way Car Wash to get the car washed and to make sure that our rims from Xtreme Kustoms Wheels stay clean. Then we came home to meet with a representative from Fritz Cartage & Asphalt for an estimate. Then we called Van Drunen Heating to have them come see what was wrong with the heating unit, but they said that they couldn’t send anyone because they were at Training Concepts. After all of that we headed back to work which is located next to West Side Tractors Sales.

All of the stories that were shared were very creative. Thanks to everyone for participating. Speaking of thanks… BIG THANKS to our lunch sponsor, Ed Miniat and our lunch caterer Aurelio’s for the yummy pizza, salad and chicken wings.

SNAP YOUR FINGERS AND BUILD A GREAT STAFF?BY LARRY GALLER

Sorry to disappoint, but building a great staff takes more than desire and a fast “snap-of-the-fingers.”

If we are, as the business press keeps mentioning, approaching full employment it will be increasingly difficult to attract job applicants. This puts pressure on employers seeking to hire staff for replacement and especially for employers who are in growth mode and need to increase the size of their staff. Hiring conditions in many areas and in many industries will make it difficult to attract qualified job prospects. What many employers are suddenly realizing is that they are in competition for good prospects and, at the same time, are competing to keep excellent staff members from abandoning them for greener pastures.

If you take a methodical approach to this challenge you can play defense against losing good staff members and play offense in attracting new staff.

The method in this methodical approach is to treat the whole staffing issue as a holistic system of events or actions instead of just working to improve one aspect (say training for example) of the staffing continuum to insure you will be:

Able to retain your staff by shoring up the culture making work more meaningful, pleasant, and participative.

Having proper compensation levels (including competitive levels of benefits).

Long-term training for constant productivity and quality improvement.

Career-path opportunities.

Constructive performance reviews.

A sense of pride and respect for everyone’s contribution.

The result will be that you will have a higher performing staff because you will make better hires who are better trained so they make fewer errors and over-satisfy your customers. All that effort makes the business better, increases the rate of growth, and the business becomes more profitable (at least in theory).

Even if you are fully staffed today starting work on this methodical approach to a better staff will serve you well because you will profit in many ways from an improved staff and, when you need to hire to fill a vacancy, you will be better prepared to attract qualified applicants and make exceptional hires. It sure beats snapping your fingers and hoping it happens.

more News & Updatesl ARE YOU SOCIAL ENOUGH The “How to use Social Media for your Business

Workshop” hosted by the South Holland Public Library was fantastic. If you were not there, you missed a treat. The many things we learned about promoting your business on social media and how you can effectively harness your target market were unbelievable. The Guest speaker Dee Reinhardt has been a consultant for many well known large and small businesses. The information shared was definitely an eye opener as to how connections are made from one avenue on the internet to another with more ease that one knew. If you missed this workshop, please come to the next one. SHBA plans to help businesses have access to workshops which can enhance their visibility, and one way to do that is to partner with the South Holland Public Library and offer more informative sessions. This is one time we don’t mind you taking advantage of us. Happy Holidays!

l SCHOOL DISTRICT 205 STUDENT BOARD WANTS COMMUNITY TO HEAL PEACE BY PEACE

Last month, SHBA participated in a Peace Walk with our member School District 205 through the streets of Harvey, Illinois. Did you know that School District 205 has the only registered functioning Student School Board in America? This picture shows how the students are willing to make a difference in the community by making a statement and working with local law enforcement to be better and stronger together!
