Hello Holly Tree Members, As we enter the last quarter of 2012, I have been reflecting on the past 14 years that I have been here. In the lobby of the clubhouse sits a history book that many long standing members helped to com- pile; I tend to thumb through it to remind myself of how Holly Tree has evolved since 1973. If you get the chance, look through this one day while visiting. This reflection, along with the giving of the “State of the Club” summary at the annual meeting, gave me an idea for a different kind of message in this newsletter. Back in the summer Mr. Kessler brought in a framed copy of Holly Tree’s Mission Statement. I have it hanging in my office where, as I walk out, I cannot miss it. I thought that this newsletter would be a great place to share with both long standing and new members. It simply states the following: “HOLLY TREE COUNTRY CLUB is a family oriented, private club complete with an eighteen hole golf course, ten tennis courts, and Olympic size pool and Plantation style clubhouse for social gatherings. Built in 1973 and located on 270 acres of rolling Piedmont terrain, Holly Tree’s prestige has given it the reputation of offering the best in Southern Hospitality. Our mission is to be one of the finest family oriented private clubs in the Upstate. We, the membership, pledge to: Maintain and enhance our traditions. Maintain the club facilities at the highest standards. Provide programs and facilities that give the highest level of comfort, satisfaction and service to the members as a whole. Endeavor to enhance our history and traditions through leisure activities. As the center of the community, provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere. We, the staff of Holly Tree Country Club, pledge to: Offer the best food and service possible. Provide the best possible value at a competitive price. Give friendly, efficient service. Provide pleasant, comfortable surroundings. Provide ease of use. Be accommodating without infringing on other members or sacrificing the integrity of the club. Provide competitive yet enjoyable events. Be helpful in every way possible. Recognize that our best resource is the employee. Provide service and products within the assigned budget. Remember the reason we are here—THE MEMBERS.” Through these values we have a great, rich history. The staff, Board of Governors, and its commit- tees strive to further enhance all of Holly Tree Country Club. I look forward to continuing to serve Holly Tree and may we continue to be blessed with a great membership. Hello Holly Tree Members,

As we enter the last quarter of 2012, I have been reflecting on the past 14 years that I have been here. In the lobby of the clubhouse sits a history book that many long standing members helped to com-pile; I tend to thumb through it to remind myself of how Holly Tree has evolved since 1973.

It simply states the following:

“HOLLY TREE COUNTRY CLUB is a family oriented, private club complete with an eighteen hole golf course, ten tennis courts, and Olympic size pool and Plantation style clubhouse for social gatherings. Built in 1973 and located on 270 acres of rolling Piedmont terrain, Holly Tree’s prestige has given it the reputation of offering the best in Southern Hospitality.

Our mission is to be one of the finest family oriented private clubs in the Upstate.

We, the membership, pledge to: • Maintain and enhance our traditions.

• Maintain the club facilities at the highest standards.

• Provide programs and facilities that give the highest level of comfort, satisfaction and service to the members as a whole.

• Endeavor to enhance our history and traditions through leisure activities.

• As the center of the community, provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

We, the staff of Holly Tree Country Club, pledge to: • Offer the best food and service possible.

• Provide the best possible value at a competitive price.

• Give friendly, efficient service.

• Provide pleasant, comfortable surroundings.

• Provide ease of use.

• Be accommodating without infringing on other members or sacrificing the integrity of the club.

• Provide competitive yet enjoyable events.

• Be helpful in every way possible.

• Recognize that our best resource is the employee.

• Provide service and products within the assigned budget.

• Remember the reason we are here—THE MEMBERS.” Through these values we have a great, rich history. The staff, Board of Governors, and its commit-tees strive to further enhance all of Holly Tree Country Club. I look forward to continuing to serve Holly Tree and may we continue to be blessed with a great membership. Respectfully,

Joe Jackson, General Manager and Director of Golf

October is here - the leaves are beginning their colorful transformation, football season is in full swing, and as usual thanks to our superintendent, John Sheran, the golf course is in the best condition of the year. With the cooler weather upon us, we encourage everyone to bring the family, and join us for a few extra rounds of golf. With the greens healing from their aeration, please remember to take care of them by repairing all of your ball marks plus any others you may see. This will allow us to play on some of the best greens in the state of SC year round. As a reminder, driving a golf car is not different than driving a car. All players must have a valid driver’s license in order to operate a golf car at Holly Tree. This is for the safety of all players - your group as well as other groups on the golf course. This includes on the golf course, going from the driving range to the course and in the parking lot. All of these areas can be very dangerous. As you drive up to use the driving range, please take notice that the driving range is roped off. We ask that you stay off that area, by walking around the perimeter. This area has been over seeded with rye grass for the winter months.

GROUNDS NEWS

The aeration on Sunday night September 9th through Tuesday the 11th went great. We had all the greens aerated by the end of Monday the 10th and had the putting green, 1-8 and 9 & 18 topdressed by the time it was dark Monday night. This way the front nine was able to be open for play on Tuesday with no delays. We topdressed 10 through 17 greens Tuesday, which were open at 3:30 for any-body to turn or go off the back. The fall aeration is usually the hardest to deal with because you are aerating turf that has usually shortened up its root system which results in some areas of the turf being ripped and damaged because with shallow roots the turf gets pulled up in certain weak areas. Also you have thin areas from summer stress that when we topdress are even thinned a little more until they grow back in through seeding and the turf’s recovery. Since the initial aeration and topdressing we have come back September 21 and 27 and topdressed lightly twice.

The par three tees and the driving range tee has been overseeded with ryegrass seed and will take about 3 to 4 weeks to grow in. The ladies tee at number 8 will be enlarged and leveled in the 1st week of October and the ladies will either use the drop area or the black tee for about 3 weeks.

The addition of the fan at the putting green was fabulous for the health of the turfgrass plants this past summer. We have already started blowing some leaves from some drought stressed trees and more will soon follow, keeping us busy for months. We will also be changing out flowers in the upcoming weeks. Sorry for any inconvenience as we topdress greens and tees and water when needed.

John Sheran, CGCS Jason, Terry, and Crew
