Holodomor Memorial Day Saturday, November 28, 2015 At City Hall 1:30 pm As in past years, there will be a Panakhyda Memorial Service out- side with a short program to follow inside City Hall. Prof. Lubomyr Luciuk of the Royal Military College will be the guest presenter. The Holodomor is the name given to the genocide by famine that occurred in Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. As many as 10 million Ukrainians perished as victims of a man-made famine under Joseph Stalin’s regime, with 25,000 dying each day at the peak of the famine. The name Holodomor is the Ukrainian word for "plague of hunger" or “death inflicted by starvation” derived from two words, “holod” – starvation/famine and “moryty” to inflict death. Let us remember that this year Ukraine and the world will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the memory of the victims of the Holodmor - Genocide of 1932-33. This tragic page remains an unhealed wound in the history of our people. The memory of millions of lost lives, the pain of hundreds of thousands of families, unites most of the citizens of Ukraine, who always on the fourth Saturday of November light a candle of remembrance and go to the memorial places in Kyiv and in their cities and villages. Prayer Request: Please keep in your prayers members of our parish, our family and friends who are ailing, are in hospitals, nursing homes and those who are not able to join actively in their community.

Reminder: for families of individuals who are admitted to hospital - If you or a family member is admitted to hospital and you wish to have a priest visit, please be sure to have someone call the Parish Office to make this request. Your pastor may have no other way of knowing that you are in hospital.

The Holidays are around the Corner!!! We are coming

to that time of the year, when we are all busy with

holiday preparations - shopping, family get-together,

parties, and other events. In the Christian spirit, it is also

a good time to remember those less fortunate who are

not able to celebrate the holidays, either because of

financial problems or they are away from home and

cannot celebrate the holidays with their families. Coffee Break - Ned Derkach

Щиро Вам дякуємо! Thank you for your Generosity!

Should anyone have matters that need

to be brought to the attention of the

Pastoral Council, please write down

the issue on paper and address it to

Zenon Scraba who will present it to

the council. We need to hear from our

parishioners as we move forward.

Holiness consists not only the absence of evil or sin: holiness is the presence of higher spiritual values, joined tp purity from sin. God is the only one holy by nature. He is the Source of holiness for angels and mankind. People can attain holiness only in God, “not by nature, but by participation, by struggle and prayer” (St Cyril of Jerusalem). Asceticism is our struggle to keep the commandments o f Chr i s t . I t encompasses not only bodily and spiritual efforts, but also the method by which we pass through the three stages of the spiritual life, namely: purification, illumination, and deification (union with God). Purification refers to the process by which one is cleansed from the passions through: 1) the rejection af all evil thoughts and desires from the mind and heart. 2) the turning to the soul’s three powers (reason, desire, and will) towards God, and 3) the overcoming of self-love for God and neighbour.

Illumination refers to the process by which the Grace of the Holy Spirit, received in Baptism, enlightens the person purified (or at least being purified|) of the passions to the true knowledge of God and creation. Illumination is seen primarily in the gift of discern ent by which one distinguishes between 1) what is from God or above nature, 2) what is according to nature or good, and 3) what is unnatural or evil. Deification is union with God, the goal of Christian life; experienced in part during this lift, but more fully and unendingly in the next. Scriptures says that God is consumingfire. When we are united with God in the sate of pure prayer, we become entirely engulfed in the flame of Divine love and see the Uncreated Light of Divinity. This state cannot be described in words, but is known only through experience. \union with God imparts immeasurable love, humilityand thankfulness. Deification is what mankind was created for from the beginning; it is what makes us truly human.

2015 Seminary Special Collection Appeal

The seminary collection is based on the number of “households” in regular attendance on an average Sunday. For 2015 our parish has been assessed $3,011. To date, our seminary collection is $1,080, a shortfall of $1,931. We are appealing to our parishioners for a special donation to cover this shortfall. Please make cheques payable to Holy Family Parish. Thank You!

How Christians Should Celebrate Advent and Christmas

Did you ever notice that dessert is the first dish in line at many buffet restaurants? Yes, you could eat dinner backwards, starting with dessert, then moving on to the appetizer and main course. In the end you eat all the food, but it's nowhere near as fulfilling as enjoying each part of the meal in its proper place. Or worse, dessert could fill you up before you eat a balanced meal. Sometimes we suffer the same temptation with Christmas. Our culture tends to skip Advent and start

celebrating Christmas after Thanksgiving, if we're lucky to make it that far! Then it's all packed up and stored away by New Year's. This year, consider returning to the ancient practice of seeing the whole Christmas "cycle", the period that embraces both the Time of saint Philips Fast, Advent and Christmas seasons, as one unit of joyous celebration. Preparation comes first, then comes celebration extending a few weeks after Christmas Day. The focal point of the Christmas cycle is obvious: God becoming one of us in Jesus, the Incarnation. All three phases of the cycle, Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, hinge on and celebrate that

point. These celebrations help us to name the ways our lives are caught up in the "big story" of Christ. And these feasts tie our lives to Christians throughout history. The tradition of the Church, the living gospel, is the real-life experience of Christians like you and like me, and those who have gone before us. During Advent, which began this year on Saturday November 14, we emphasize the joy that some would compare to the months before a child is

born: excitement, wonder, joy, expectation, even exhilaration at the life that is in our midst right now, yet also a hope and longing, and a carefulness to get things into order. During the Christmas season we celebrate the wonder of the Incarnation. How wondrously

we are made that the Word of God would become one of us! God shows us how to live fully: by pouring out our lives for others. That is what the days of Christmas are all about. On Christmas Day in our Ukrainian Byzantine Tradition we hear from the Gospel of that day about the three Wise Men symbolizing the many races for whom Christ was born. Epiphany/Theophany the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, January 6, we celebrate Christ becoming manifest, that is, present, to all peoples. The baptism of Jesus marks the beginning of his public ministry. God's "Christmas gift" of the Incarnation is a gift for everyone!

St Philips Fast, Advent and Christmas seasons, as one unit

of joyous celebration.
