HOLOS closes the process chain.
Utmost precision with minimum
data quantities
HOLOS can read data from all typical CAD surface
descriptions (Bezier surfaces, B-splines, NURBS).
NURBS is particularly suited for using workpiece data
from the design department for quality control pur-
poses without any loss in quality. The reduced data
quantity guarantees high processing speed.
HOLOS enables Reverse-Engineering.
The wide basis of information
technology is clearly dominated
by Windows NT and UNIX.
Following this trend, HOLOS is
not platform-dependent and can
be used with Windows NT and
UNIX and therefore in any exist-
ing system environment.
Reliable and fast
data exchange
HOLOS operates with standard interface formats
such as VDAFS and IGES, for example. You can transmit
workpiece data directly from your production or design
department and use it to generate measuring
programs.
Reverse Engineering.
Because your customers
need data.
For the process chain to be completely closed, it is
not enough to be able to read and understand data
formats. Re-engineering work or copy milling in
the design area (using a Zeiss horizontal-arm CMM
equipped with an articulating milling head) can only
be performed if surface descriptions are generated
from point data and converted into a format which
can be read by the CAD or CNC system.
HOLOS is the ideal tool for turning your CMM into
a digitizing unit. HOLOS supplies surface descriptions
in the form of Bezier surfaces or NURBS in the data
exchange format requested by your customer or used
in your existing process chain.
HOLOS saves time and is not
subject to system limitations.
From the design department via model and mold
making to the actual production floor, the same data
record is used for all steps involved in the process
chain. HOLOS provides clear-cut data exchange and
correct transfer of surface descriptions. This saves time
and eliminates errors.
HOLOS works under
Windows NT and UNIX.

HOLOS. Measuringcan be so simple.
Work with HOLOS offers you
all the benefits of menu driven
operation. HOLOS automates
even complex measuring opera-
tions. This saves measuring
and programming times and mini-
mizes error sources.
See what you measure.
With the appropriate CAD data available, you can
see any section of a workpiece in any perspective true
to scale on your monitor. A simple mouseclick is needed
to rotate the displayed component through any axis,
in any direction and to zoom any detail.
With HOLOS, a
measuring program is
generated directly by
simply clicking on
measuring or reference
points. The measuring
run is stored and
simulated on screen.
Measuring program per
mouseclick
HOLOS permits measuring programs to be gene-
rated with unprecedenteded speed. Create them by
simply clicking on measuring or reference points on the
illustrated component, depending on the measuring
method selected. And HOLOS executes at the same
time the measuring order activated last.
The advantages of HOLOS can also be used for
off-line programming so that your valuable coordinate
measuring machine can be used to capacity for
measuring only.
Correcting CAD data without
involving your design department.
HOLOS utilizes CAD data with its complete layer
structure. Existing surface elements can be deleted,
masked, rotated, reversed and displaced on all layers
provided by the CAD system. This means that you your-
self can edit the CAD models to meet the respective
metrological requirements. You make matters easy for
your design department and are metrologically inde-
pendent.
And should you find during the production run that
additional measurement will be required, HOLOS
allows you to add standard geometric elements, e.g.
a borehole, to the existing CAD component description.
HOLOS permits the
generation of complete
workpieces from
standard geometric
elements.
It is even possible with HOLOS to generate com-
plete workpieces consisting of standard geometric
elements (circle, plane, sphere, cylinder, cone, oblong
and rectanguar bore). When digitizing workpieces, this
function can prove to be extremely useful and time-
saving if you know the form and position of their stan-
dard geometric elements.
Time-saving correction and
reliable data input
Powerful CAD functions normally eliminate the
need to involve your design department, save time and
allow you to use your CMM without interruptions.
With HOLOS, existing CAD component
descriptions can be supplemented by standard
geometric elements.
HOLOS. Measuring without in-depth knowledge.
In the past, you had to switch
between different program modules
for different measuring tasks.
Not so with HOLOS. This program
package takes care of all other
tasks for you – you simply measure
and leave the rest to HOLOS.
Reliable measuring program
generation
HOLOS takes all information required for measure-
ment from CAD data records. No tedious manual entering
of nominal data, which means that an error source has
been eliminated. Whether you measure free-form surfaces
or standard geometric elements, HOLOS always provides
results of high information content.
No need for manual identification
of stardard geometric elements
HOLOS identifies CAD data which is stored as
stardard geometries. The characteristics (length, width,
diameter, etc.) of a geometric element are output auto-
matically in the result, permitting direct interpretation
of the measured data.
It is of course also possible to identify free-form
surfaces in the CAD data records which describe stan-
dard geometric elements.
This is how HOLOS
digitizes free-form
surfaces: curves and
surfaces are generated
from the captured
points.

Easy-to-operate menus
Clearly laid out pull-down menus help you to
compile and operate the measuring and digitization
programs. Menu items are easily located. You then
branch into the desired function and activate the item
by clicking on it with the mouse. Automatically preset
defaults are your guarantee of a logical measuring
or digitizing program.
Dialog for enhanced reliability
With conventional measuring equipment, you may
have to spend a long time troubleshooting if a (meas-
uring) error has caused a failure. HOLOS, however,
accompanies you through the entire run. The program
monitors whether all operational sequences are
complete and correct. During the actual measuring or
alignment procedure, HOLOS gives warning if any steps
have not been executed correctly. If an operation is
incomplete, HOLOS stops the measuring run. The need
for time-consuming troubleshooting following program
interruption is eliminated.
Intuitive operation in any
environment
Benefit from the easy and intuitive operation of the
user interface also in mixed system environments.
If you change from UNIX to Windows NT, or want to run
additional measuring machines under NT, you will not
require any expensive retraining.
Menu driven operation offers high reliability and
saves measuring and programming times.
HOLOS. The direct way to anerror-free measuring program.
HOLOS supports you when you
measure free-form surfaces and
standard geometries either on
manual or CNC coordinate
measuring machines. The complex
operational sequences provided
by conventional systems are
available in HOLOS as automatic,
easy-to-operate modules.
Complex alignment in a matter
of minutes
With conventional systems, one of the most time-
consuming jobs is the mathematical alignment of the
workpiece. HOLOS provides image and program
support for aligning the measurement object.
The workpiece to be measured with its CAD data is
graphically illustrated, arbitrary points are probed and
assigned in interactive graphic operation to the work-
piece.
Manual measurement
HOLOS also offers the possibility of performing
discrete-point measurements on your manual or
CNC CMM. Following probing, the results are displayed
immediately on the monitor in the appropriate position
of the workpiece illustration.
CNC measurement
Storing and recalling CNC measuring programs is
easy with HOLOS. The recalling of a measuring program
once stored is a rather lengthy procedure with con-
ventional systems. With HOLOS, you can start previously
stored measuring programs without any special skills.
This makes HOLOS ideal for in-process screening of
high-volume production with a flexible workpiece
spectrum.
9
Measuring programs created
in the learn mode
HOLOS automatically stores the discrete points
measured manually as a measuring program. This
eliminates the time-consuming, frequently error-prone
generation of a probe route required in conventional
learn programming.
Graphic, interactive programming
Clicking on a measuring point in question
is sufficient to define the point. No probe travel
is required. HOLOS then computes the travel paths be-
tween the selected measuring points. Since programm-
ing is performed without any CMM travel, it is possible
for HOLOS to compile a new program during the actual
measurement. This reduces machine idle times.
Intelligent software functions
reduce programming work
HOLOS offers a comprehensive range of tools
for the automatic generation of measuring runs. Points
on the edges of punched or deep-drawn pieces, for
example, or net profiles and net points can be measured
automatically.
Variable definition and evaluation
of tolerance fields
The evaluation of measured data is based on the
tolerances defined in HOLOS, with the possibility
of varying the distribution and evaluation of tolerance
fields on the surface elements.
HOLOS saves time and money
The automation of many measuring runs minimizes
the programming work and reduces machine idle times.
Simple interpretation
of results. Depending on
the task, a suitable
illustration is selected:
as freely positionable flags,
as chromatic coordinates,
as a vectorial or numeric
illustration, as coordinate
axes or with colored
markings.
Measurement results
along a surface
profile can be shown
as a vectorial view
on the workpiece
illustration along a
scanned line, or as a
two-dimensional
curve along the
nominal line.

HOLOS. Surface descriptionsare computed automatically.
The points captured when
digitizing do not have to be
edited by another system.
HOLOS automatically calculates
the surface description.
The steps required by conventional
systems, e.g. data conversion
and integration of other pro-
grams, are not required here.
From the scanned data,
HOLOS automatically
generates surface
descriptions in the
required CAD format.
Milling in the design area
When used with a horizontal-arm measuring
machine of the Design series and the articulating
milling head, HOLOS can be used for direct on-line copy
milling, with specific profile lines being scanned on one
half of the model and the milling work being performed
symmetrically on the other half. For the initial creation
of a design model, HOLOS can cut grid lines directly
into the prototype model on the basis of CAD data,
drastically reducing the time required to produce this
prototype model.
Not just point clouds,
but finished surfaces
There is no need to invest in additional systems for
solving complete reverse engineering tasks.
Profiling with HOLOS:
One half of the model is scanned and the other
is symmetrically milled with the articulating
milling head.
Instant provision of precise,
verified model information
From the surface data obtained during digitizing
with the CNC CMM, HOLOS directly computes the
relevant CAD information.
Such surface descriptions can be checked right
away, without an additional CAD system. You simply
use the newly generated surface description to perform
a verification measurement of the digitized surface.
