A fantastic entry of nearly 1000 head of stock went under the hammer for the

Autumn 2017 Rare & Native Breed sale and topped at £3150!

A nice entry of quality pigs saw the trade very much in

line with Exeter’s trade on Friday. Top call of the day

was for the best of the sows from Messrs Flindall of

Morvah in Cornwall reaching £120 with the best from

Will Jennings at £118 and others between £110 - £115.

Prime pigs saw a top of £115 for a nice pen from Roy

Johns of Shebbear with the best of 20 from Richard and

Vicky Gubbins of Exeter at £110. The pick of the

younger pigs sold to £92 for Messrs Sandercock of

Delabole and went off to their new home at Yealmpton

near Plymouth.

Kivells are delighted to report that this week we have

sold a massive 461 pigs which is one of the largest entries for any auctioneers firm in the UK.

A nice sized entry of poultry saw plenty

of buyers in attendance but they were

a little picky on which lots they wanted.

Top call of the day was lot 285 for Mr

BG Couch of Helland near Bodmin at

£42 with Winston Davey of Kennards

House close up with the best of his

nice entry of birds at £35. Both Mrs M

Wickett of Week St Mary and Mrs E Percival of Inwardleigh exceeded the £30

mark with the pick of a quality run from Kim Herbert of Buckland Brewer topping

at £24.

Its nice to see several goats forward with a useful trade

seen throughout. Mr & Mrs Seery of Okehampton took

honours at £64 with Charlie Currah of Ashwater at £53

and again Mr & Mrs Seery at £51 all of which went off to

their new home in Dorset.

A splendid entry of over 400 sheep saw the isles full of potential

buyers from as far afield as Dorset, Somerset and West

Cornwall. Top call was £1050 given for the Valais Blacknose

ram sold by a delighted Messrs Slee & Hooper of Buckland

Brewer and going to its new home near Callington.

Border Leicester rams were in demand hitting £325 twice for

rams from Messrs Martyn of Boyton with Mr M Morgan and

Mrs R Shepheard both flying past the £200 mark. The best of

the Jacobs hit £200 for Mrs R Jasper of Lewannick with others from Mr J Harvey of Washborne Rise, Totnes at £163.

Zwartbles topped at £91 for the pick of the dispersal for Messrs

B & V Trewin of Coads Green whilst it was good to see Devon

Closewools sell really well topping at a fantastic £163 for Mr P

Doust of Bideford. Plenty of rare breed store lambs saw the

first pen from Messrs J & L Miller of Hatherleigh reach £70.50

with their second pen at £64. Finally an honourable mention for

Mr S Ley of Bridestowe for his fantastic line up of seven pens

of Badger Faced and Blue Leicester sheep which saw a top call

of £210 with others at £200.

A really good entry of cattle saw plenty of buyers present

with a top call of £1400 for the Aberdeen Angus bull which

was part of a dispersal on behalf of Jolinox Ltd, Dolton with

the best of their cows and calves at £1365 and others from

the same good home at £1323 and £1281. A nice

consignment of Devon cattle saw the best hit £1313 on behalf

of Messrs B & L Landick & R Glanville of Sampford Spiney

near Tavistock with others from Messr R & L

Ashton of Shebbear at £1008. Best of the steers hit

£1008 for Messrs Jolinox with Highlands to £540 for

Messrs RBI & MM Clarke of St Breward.

Mrs HP Chapman of Trebullett, Cornwall saw her

best Devon heifers sell to £1040 and going to their

new home near Bristol with others in from Messrs

B & L Landick & R Glanville hitting £945. John Hodge

of Okehampton sold his usual consignment of Belted

Galloway heifers 12 months old to a top call of £483.

A good number of rams

forward saw a selective

trade. Top price of 300 gns

was achieved by the Brom

Flock of the Bromell Family,

Bradworthy, with their

second place shearling ram.

This was closely followed by

a ram lamb sold by Graham

Tucker of the Kersbrook Flock, Launceston at 320 gns. The overall champion and 1st prized shearling ram also

sold after the sale at 280 gns. Older rams were in less demand with JA Darke Ltd of the Coleridge Flock,

Kingsbridge, selling a 4T Ram at 200 gns.

Only two pens of ewes were forward, top price was achieved for the 1st prize pen sold at 100 gns on behalf of

the Bromell Family, the ‘Brom Flock’. Mr Bax of the Tregorden Flock, Wadebridge sold a pen of FM ewes at 86 gns.

The Valais Blacknose sheep created a huge interest and strong

biding. The sale topped at £3150 for a 2015 born ewe

‘Genstones Martha’ that had been scanned in lamb with twins for November. Ewes sold running with the ram

realised £2100 with a shearling ewe not in lamb also realising £2100. Ewe lambs were in strong demand topping

at £1890 and averaging £1750.

~ NEW BLACKNOSE FLOCK PURCHASED @ HOLSWORTHY ~

Kivells were delighted to welcome Nikki Markham of the charity

‘Battling On’ to Holsworthy Livestock Market to purchase some

‘foundation sheep’ for their new flock of Valais Blacknose sheep

which will live on their farm near Callington. Battling on’s flagship

programme is the multi award winning programme ‘Together We

Can Succeed’ where veterans are trained to become mentors and

instructors supporting some of the UKs most disadvantaged

young people. The Valais sheep were purchased to support

young people with learning difficulties gain confidence through

animal assisted intervention taught by veterans. Kivells are pleased to play a small part in supporting this very

worthwhile organisation www.battling-on.com.
