NOVEMBER 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians: October was a very busy month. In the spirit of Thanksgiving we

celebrated Mass together. The Me2We student leaders also encouraged all to donate non-perishable food items to donate to families in need through St. Vincent de Paul Society. Thank you for your donations. For November, Holy Child and Humberwood Downs will gather together to remember those who have fallen. Progress Reports are being prepared and will be sent home Nov. 13th. More details will be emailed/sent home to all parents to sign up online for Parent-Teacher interview times. Blessings, Ana Pires

In Flanders Fields Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

1872-1918

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place;

and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead, Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands

we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high,

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep,

though poppies grow In Flanders Fields.

Amen

November’s Virtue: PEACE

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

(Matthew 5:9)

Peace is a goal of all spiritual people. It begins within ourselves and is an inner state of well-being and calm. People of peace promote non-violence, practice conflict resolution, and believe in cooperating to solve problems.

This year at Holy Child we are aiming to build and reward our students’ Learning Skills & Work Habits. Since these are important life-long skills to future student success, we will be awarding student achievement. In the first reporting period, student achievement in Responsibility and Organization

will be recognized. Kindergarten to grade 8 teachers have submitted the names of students who receive an ‘ E’ for Excellent achievement in their Progress Reports. In February, focus will be on Initiative and Collaboration and in June it will be Self-Regulation and Independent Work. Grade 7 & 8 students will continue to be awarded Honour Roll medals when they achieve (80% or more). Our monthly Virtues will continue to be recognized as well.

Ontario’s Growing Success document defines RESPONSIBILITY as: -fulfilling responsibilities and commitment within the learning environment -completing and submitting class work, homework and assignments according to agreed-upon timelines -taking responsibility for and managing his/her own behaviour HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME: -help your child set goals -take a few moments every day to chat about the school day and be a good listener -make sure to always check and sign the agenda -communicate regularly with your child’s teacher -monitor and encourage your child’s progress and homework completion -establish a balance between homework and other activities

Ontario’s Growing Success document defines ORGANIZATION as: -devising and following a plan and process for completing work and tasks -establishing priorities and managing time to complete tasks and achieve goals -dentifying, gathering, evaluating and using information, technology and resources to complete tasks HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME: -provide your child with a suitable environment for working at home -work out a specific time for studying and homework completion -provide your child with the proper tools and supplies to complete the homework (e.g., computer access, pen, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, scissors, tape, paper clips, ruler and highlighters.) -establish a balance between homework and other activities (leisure or extra-curricular)

Our school buses are operated by several bus companies. To ensure safe travels, students are reminded to follow the rules listed below: Remain seated in assigned seat;

No eating or drinking;

Keep aisle clear;

Remain seated until bus is stopped;

Keep noise level down;

Wait for driver to signal before crossing in front of bus – just to ensure all traffic has come to a stop. Please note that any concerns with a particular route are to be directed to: https://www.torontoschoolbus.org or 416-394-4287.

At home, please be vigilant about your child’s online activities (texting, group chats, Instagram, Snap Chat, etc). At school, we continue to remind

students of acceptable / appropriate use of language on social media. The reality is that anything posted online is retrievable from servers and students will be held accountable for the comments and photos they send and share-these are NOT considered private. Police Youth Services has presented this information to our intermediate students and will be re-visiting to reinforce this message. Please see link https://cefai22.wordpress.com/ and the attachment ‘Parent Tips’ for your reference. Thank you for your support.
