Issue: #23 November 19, 2010

From Pastor Wendy

Greetings Holy Covenant family,

Every day that ticks by in November

inches us closer and closer to the

holidays that will soon be upon us.

Please don't be mad at me for pointing

that out. It's a mind-blowing reality for

me, too. Just thinking about

Thanksgiving planning and Christmas

preparations makes my blood pressure

shoot up a little.

However, I received a little 'gem' in my email inbox this week and

wanted to share it with you; in case thinking about the holidays

has a similar effect on your blood pressure. It's from a daily

devotional called "Inward/Outward" www.inwardoutward.org and

this particular one is written by the late Henri Nouwen, a priest

with an incredible gift of speaking directly to our souls and who's

written numerous books that are spiritually inspiring. His

devotional on October 30 was about being "Useless and Silent".

Before you read this, I invite you to recall the soul quieting words

of Psalm 46 - especially verse 10 - "Be still and know that I am

God".

I hope you enjoy it and that it stills your anxious soul as it did

mine.

Blessings to you all,

Youth Ministry

We need quiet time in the presence of God. Although we want to

make all our time time for God, we will never succeed if we do not

reserve a minute, an hour, a morning, a day, a week, a month, or

whatever period of time, for God and God alone.

This asks for much discipline and risk taking because we always

seem to have something more urgent to do and "just sitting there"

and "doing nothing" often disturbs us more than it helps. But there

is no way around this. Being useless and silent in the presence of

our God belongs to the core of all prayer.

In the beginning we often hear our own unruly inner noises more

loudly than God's voice. This is at times very hard to tolerate. But

slowly, very slowly, we discover that the silent time makes us quiet

and deepens our awareness of ourselves and God.

Then, very soon, we start missing these moments when we are

deprived of them, and before we are fully aware of it an inner

momentum has developed that draws us more and more into

silence and closer to that still point where God speaks to us.

Request From a Military Parent

To Holy CovenantMy son is a 2002 graduate of Texas

A&M University and a Captain in the

U.S. Army who has completed two

deployments to the Middle East and is

currently serving in Afghanistan.

Having a child in a hostile environment

causes parents to have increased

concern and worries. I want to know

how other parents manage this stress and anxiety while their son

or daughter is deployed to the military. I am asking parents to

share their story. My goal is to compile a book of stories, poetry,

artwork and other encouraging messages for parents who have

children in the military. My plan is to assemble the works into a

book of daily devotional readings. I believe families from past and

present military conflicts can benefit through sharing stories of

how to cope, and perhaps even thrive, during the deployment of

loved ones.

With churches such as yours I am able to connect with parents,

grandparents or siblings who can recall how they survived a

deployment of their child or sibling. These stories can pertain to

the recent conflicts or may include the Vietnam War, Korean

Conflict and WWII.

Some ideas for consideration for parents are as follows: What did

you do to decrease the stress and anxiety while your child was in a

hostile environment? Specifically, did you rely on your faith, using

a specific prayer or scripture? Did you use poetry or artwork to

express your emotions? Did you exercise or make any changes in

your lifestyle? Did you use humor, read heartwarming stories, or

write in a journal? Looking back, are there things you would have

done differently?

This project is not a political forum. All secular and non-secular

writings will be considered for inclusion in this work. I am not

soliciting for any monetary donations.

Everyone likes to share his or her story, particularly about one's

child. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to

contact me.

Sincerely,

Alice Murphy
