STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION:
YOU ARE A GIFT
Through God’s grace, each of us has been endowed with strengths, gifts, talents, and abilities. We are asked to use our God-given gifts
to help others.
The term “talent” for a gift with which we have been entrusted by God comes from Jesus’ Parable of the Talents, where it originally
meant a valuable coin. Like the stewards in the parable, entrusted with valuable commodities by our Master, will we hoard them in
fear, or invest them for great return?
Please prayerfully consider how you can share your blessings with our parish community and the wider world. Set aside more time
for ministry participation to benefit our parish faith community and those who need our assistance in the wider community.
Look for opportunities where your entire family can participate!
“ As each one has received a gi ft, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10)
REFLEXION DE
CORRESPONSABILIDAD:

Faith Matters—The Problem of the Widow's Mite It is easy to listen to the f irst part of Mark's Gospel for this week. The opening v erses, rife with condemnation of the scribes, are
music to our ears. We enjoy a guilty pleasure with this scathing attack on those in authority. The particulars of Jesus' condemnation
cut across time and culture--flashy clothes, desiring places of high honor, receiving perks and privileges. Jesus takes on the puffed
up, the proud and cuts them down to size. His indictments are horrif ic and dev astating; his judgement swif t. This is the easy part of the passage, and we see these nameless scribes in our own liv es: difficult employ ers, problematic clergy, smarmy politicians.
What should giv e us pause is that the passage is not addressed to the scribes but to the crowds. Could it be that Jesus sensed
within the crowd their own encouragement of the shameless action of the scribes? Perhaps Jesus wanted the crowds to recognize
their role in this dishonorable situation. He seemed to ask, "Did any of y ou call the scribes on their behavior? Did y ou inv ite them to a
deeper holiness, or remind them of their vocation? Did y ou ignore the pretense of the scribes hoping to receiv e benef its or fav ors?
Many in the crowd had a stake in the system, in keeping the status quo. If the behav ior of the disciples on the road to Jerusalem
was any predictor, the disciples certainly would have been delighted to take their place with those in authority, replete with ev ery perk
and priv ilege. Jesus would have none of this. He condemned one and all who participated in a corrupting system. Ev en in the
center of worship Jesus did not hold his peace. He pointed to the widow as the epitome of a system corrupted. The widow, one of the
most v ulnerable groups in Hebrew society, f elt the expectation and burden of the Law. Those around her exhorted her to be f aithf ul, to keep the Law, to be a good Jew. She absorbed this teaching and came to believ e that her f aithf ulness required her to giv e of her
last resources.
As much as we hav e often read this text with ears that hear Jesus praising this widow, such is not the case. Jesus says, "No!" to
such understanding of the Law or faithfulness. He makes the disciples see the widow--someone they would hav e been blind and deaf
to in normal circumstances--as a person of importance, a daughter of Israel. He makes them see what the perversion of God's law
does to the most v ulnerable in our midst. He does not adv ocate they should be like her but instead resets their own v alue system.
Jesus rejects any system--even the Temple--that relegates women or the poor to places of invisibility. He rejects the religious
interpretation of the Scribes and Pharisees, and departs the Temple one f inal time having promised to build a temple where mercy will
matter more than sacrif ice.
Some weeks the challenge of Scripture hits us hard. It asks us to examine our lives in places we did not realize needed
examination. This week the Scripture asks us to reset our v alue system. It cautions us against embracing any system, cultural or religion that perv erts the will of God. It asks us if we participate in systems that value some indiv iduals more than others, that select
certain people f or positions of honor at the expense of others? Are we part of groups that encourage structures in society that keep
people disadv antaged. Do we believe God asks us to impoverish ourselves in support of religious institutions?
Jesus calls us to receive his love, mercy and forgiv eness, to live in the abundance of his lov e. That abundance gives us a status
as sons and daughters of God Most High. What we have to offer in response is not mites or millions but the whole of our being--
heart, mind and soul. These are the real treasures, the ones God truly desires.
Join us at Faith Matters each Sunday

Since 2001, a total of 2146 Americans have lost their lives in support of the efforts of
Operation Enduring Freedom, in Afghanistan. Since 2003, 4486 Americans lost their lives in
support of the efforts of Operation Iraqi Freedom. We pray for the repose of their souls,
healing for their families, and wisdom for our leaders.
