H oly C ros s C a t hol i c C hu r c h “A community of disciples of Jesus Christ called to celebrate, proclaim, and share the love of God with all people.”
November 25, 2018 Thirty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Good People of Holy Cross, A friar I know once told me he was about to baptize 3 people and 1 refused. The 1 wanted to wait and see if this baptism would change his 2 friends. He came back about a month later asking to be baptized because his friends had indeed changed, he wanted what they had. While many of us have been baptized years ago, we are still called to have that same effect on others. It means we need to re-kindle in ourselves the fire of God’s love. When we get used to living a certain way for a very long time, the excitement and enthusiasm wears off ~ Jesus never ‘wears off’. We just forget to look, to see, to follow. Maybe if we spend more time working on becoming like Jesus, we’ll have less time worrying, fretting, trying to control, and falling into sins we have such a devil of a time trying to get rid of. Most of all, we are called to make a simple difference in the lives of others, so people will want to have what we have: Jesus the Christ. Blessings, Fr. Bendiciones, Padre Jude Michael

November is a month in which we remember the souls of those who have gone before us. We at Holy Cross see this as an honor and privilege to remember the souls that are dear to you. In our gathering area there is the Book of the Living. We invite you to inscribe the names of your deceased family and friends. They will all be remembered at the Bereavement Mass on November 26 at 7pm.
Prayer is a powerful way to be connected with one another. We welcome this opportunity to stay connected with you and those who have gone before us.

BOB BUECHNER BLOOD DRIVE
Sign up this weekend after Mass or on our website and save a life!
On December 1st we will hold our 9th annual “Bob Buechner Blood Drive” from 8am-2pm. Over
the years you have been nothing short of amazing! Countless thousands of people are alive today
because of you!
For me, and my family, this year’s drive has become personal. Last week our precious four year
old grandson, Maddox, was diagnosed with leukemia. It is difficult for me to write those words. I
know however, that if and when he needs blood, it will be there. I know that because I know you!
I look forward to seeing you on Saturday, December 1. Together let us give the gift of life for Christmas. God bless you.
-Mark

A Novena is nine days of focused prayer, private or
public, to obtain special graces. While the number eight in the
Judeo-Christian tradition was always thought of as a festive
number of new beginnings, the number nine seemed to be often
linked with suffering.
The heart of any Novena is the same as the first one,
called by our Lord Himself. "He commanded them not to depart
from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father." (Acts
1:4, emphasis mine)
Nine day vigils were noted in Church history from the
third century onward. By the middle ages novenas for the Pope
and Cardinals were commonplace. Still today, whenever we
undertake a novena of prayer, we are declaring that same supreme desire to wait for the promise, persevering
with confidence until the end.
Either as a public or personal observance, a novena involves nine days of hopeful anticipation of an
answer for the petition or intention for which prayers are being offered. Often a sense of urgency and
earnestness accompanies these times. they are also a wonderful witness to a belief in the power of prayer and
the dynamic role of genuine faith.
When we pray a Novena, we either pray the same prayer for all nine days or follow a list of prayers to
be prayed for each day. Every novena is a bit different in the intention, formation of prayers and practice.
Parishes often offer a novena of Masses for the departed or for a special intention, such as Mother’s
and Father’s days, vocations to the priesthood and the religious life, or leading up to the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe.
With the traditional songs and the recitation of the rosary on December 3 begins the novena in honor
of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This is organized by our Guadalupe Ministry at Holy Cross, along with other
activities that precede the great celebration of December 11 and 12. Everyone is invited!
