MISSION STATEMENT ✝ Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

1st Sunday in Lent A 2014 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! As we enter the Lenten journey, our first reading in the Book of Genesis tells us today that “the serpent was the most subtle and cunning of all the wild beasts.” The serpent certainly knows how to

distort the truth and make temptation irresistibly attractive. We know the story, the woman and man fall into the trap of the serpent’s promise that by eating the forbidden fruit their eyes will be opened and they themselves will be like gods. As they eat the fruit, their eyes are opened and what they see is that innocence has been lost. Sin has now entered the world. We might compare Eden’s paradise with the

barren and forbidding wilderness in which the Gospel is enacted. We find this to be the terrain of temptation, where the Hebrew people journeyed for forty years from slavery to liberation, where they were tested and often failed; this is the place where the devil is truly at home. As Jesus fasts in the wilderness for those forty days, He is hungry and the devil’s time has come. As the master of being subtle, the devil even puts the Son of God to the test by distorting the truth of Jesus’ mission as the Messiah. Three temptations wear masks of persuasive reason: by the use of His miraculous powers, Jesus’ hunger can be satisfied through turning the stones into bread, the belief in His mission can be guaranteed by a spectacular sign, and the temporal power to achieve that mission can be assured. All are temptations to some form of power. But no matter how strong the temptations are, Jesus is able to tear away the devil’s mask. Uncalled for miracles or sensational signs for self-promotion and worldly power have no part in the work entrusted to Him. The story of our salvation takes us from the Garden in Eden to the wilderness of the Exodus and from the Lord’s temptations to another garden (Gethsemane) where Jesus told His disciples that they should pray to not be put to the test. We know that when the ultimate test of their discipleship came, most of them failed. We might ask, “Was it their faith or their love that was weakened at that moment?” The strength of their love was shown, above all, in those who remained with Jesus at the cross and Mary Magdalene would be the first to whom Jesus appeared in the garden of the resurrection. The Lenten Journey, once again, challenges us to make sacrifices journeying through these 40 days. The sacrifices of giving up those things that draw us further away from the Lord. We need to pray for the strength to continue to persevere in our faith and in being the faithful Stewards which we are called to be. This includes caring for others in need, as well as those in need of forgiveness. It is a time to reconcile our differences and not be judgmental toward others. During this time, Jesus speaks to us of almsgiving, prayer and fasting, which is challenging to all of us since it does touch a nerve. Sometimes we do not always act upon our own good impulses, but our Lord reinforces them and gives us the strength to carry out His will as well as ours. He says to us, not if you give alms or if you pray, but rather when you give and pray and fast. Our Lord’s expectation is that His followers will heed His call. We are especially reminded of Jesus’ words at the imposition of ashes: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel,” or ”Remember, man you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” It is a time to prayerfully remember and support the good works of Catholic Charities, Fund for Retired Priests, Seminaries, CYO and Catholic School Education, as you do your share in supporting the AAA. Peace always, Fr. Joe

You may have noticed today at Mass that we used the Apostles’ Creed instead of the Nicene Creed. The origins of the Apostles’ Creed are believed to predate the Nicene Creed. It is

universally recognized by many Christians as a shared statement of our faith in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Apostles’ Creed may be used at any Sunday Mass, but the church particularly recommends its use during Lent and Easter Time. Why? Because the words of this ancient Creed have been used for centuries as the basis of our baptismal promises, and the seasons of Lent and Easter put a strong focus on baptism. During Lent we prepare those who will be baptized at Easter while readying ourselves to renew our own baptismal promises. As we recite the Apostles’ Creed, it will stir up in our hearts our commitment to Christ which was first made at our own baptisms and prepare us to renew our promises this Easter
