From Fr. Golas
I appreciate the willingness of Beth Chase to take responsibility for the Religious Education programs of both Churches of St. Jeanne Jugan Parish. These programs will continue to operate on the same schedule, places, and instructors as they do now. There will be an opportunity to implement a similar curriculum and use similar catechetical materials. Beth brings to this position her involvement in religious edu-cation for the past 15 years while being the Director of the program for the last 10 years at St. Bernard Church. In 2012, Beth was commissioned as a Lay Minister by Archbishop Mansell after completing the two year program at St. Thomas Seminary. Her concentration of study in this program was in the areas of Catechesis and the RCIA program. I welcome Beth to this new position having witnessed her
commitment, experience and genuine concern for the young people of the parish. As a parish, let us pray for all those who help our young people to know the Lord, Jesus better.
Welcome
In today’s Gospel (MT 22:34-40) we learn
that "The whole law and the prophets depend
on these two commandments." The law of
love. That's what Jesus came to establish. In a
religious milieu that was often marked by
legalism and scrupulosity, Jesus brought a kind
of freedom. He reminded us that the laws of
religion are made to serve the ultimate goal of
love: love for God and love for neighbor.
Think about the Ten Commandments. This
classical summary of God's rules for us can be
divided into two types of laws. First come the
laws about loving God: have no strange gods;
don't take the Lord's name in vain; honor the
Sabbath. Then come the laws about loving our
neighbor: honor your parents; don't kill; don't
commit adultery; don't steal; be honest; and
don't covet your neighbor's spouse or
property. When we follow the law of love that
Jesus preaches today, all of this is taken
care of.
If we loved God with our whole heart,
mind, and soul, for example, there would be
no room left for false gods. There would be no
bitterness or apathy leading us to disrespect
God's name or to fail to worship him as he has
asked. Similarly, if we loved our neighbors as
ourselves by following the Golden Rule, then
we would naturally respect them instead of
lying, killing, coveting, or the like.
Ultimately, all the dos and don'ts of the
law are just specific guidelines describing what
love looks like. This is very helpful for those
times when love doesn't come so easily to us.
When we struggle with having our heart in the
right place, the Ten Commandments give us
direction. But as Jesus instructs us today, the
goal is to grow in the kind of love that natural-
ly leads us to want to do what's best.
Congratulations to the first Confirmation Class of
St. Jeanne Jugan Parish!

St. Bernard School (SBS)
Welcomes You! We are a community of students and teachers
Grades K-8.
TEACHER CORNER: Ms. April Stitch (6th grade Physical and Life Science teacher)
Hi! I’m the 6th grade teacher, April Stich. I’m pleased to be teaching my third year at St. Bernard School. This will be my 29th year in education. I received my undergraduate degree at the University of CT and my Masters in Education from Central CT State University. I have taught third grade through eighth grade. I have been a member of the Archdiocesan curriculum committee for science and have presented in services for teachers in both physical and life sciences. I love to craft. You can find me with the Knitting Club or our crafting groups when we make fleece blankets. I enjoy working with Mrs. Kundrat and the students in the drama club. I’m a life member of American Spaniel Club. Many weekends you can find me at the dog show where I’m either judging, or my champion cocker spaniels are being shown.
Amy Kundrat (4th grade teacher) I, Amy (Gorzkowski) Kundrat, am the fourth-grade
classroom teacher, as well as the lead teacher at St. Bernard School. This is not my first time at this school since I am a proud alumna of SBS myself. In addition to teaching, I am also one of the school staff members for the ACES after-school program which provides childcare with homework assistance, games, and arts and crafts. When the school is preparing for their Christmas and spring musicals, I can be found co-directing the drama club. I truly enjoy being part of the St. Bernard School communi-ty. Whether it is inspiring a student to take their learning beyond in the classroom, participating in Family Masses each month, or attending some of the greatest school spir-it events like Trunk or Treat, each experience has you leav-ing with a smile and the feeling of being part of something great. Catholic education has played a key role in my life as a Cathedral High School (Springfield, MA) alumna before attending Providence College (Providence, RI) where I earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary and Special Education. I also went on to the University of Saint Joseph (West Hartford, CT) to earn a master's degree in Special Education. Catholic schools have given me a foundation that I hope to instill in future generations.

Volunteers Needed For Overnights Volunteers needed for the Enfield People for People Safe Harbor
Winter Warming Center During the last winter season, our organization provided a warm, safe place for the homeless to stay at overnight. Without the commitment and dedication of our volunteers we would not have been able to do this. As we prepare for this upcoming winter season beginning January 15, 2018 through March 31, 2018, we are again in need of volunteers to help make our warming center a success. Please consider committing at least two nights per month of your time to:
• Stay overnight with our guest to provide a welcome and safe environment.
• Assist the Site Monitors with their duties and responsibilities.
• Experience the satisfaction of helping those who are in need.
