PARISH BULLETIN
REFLECT
Tragedy and disappointment are inevitable. What sees you
through this? There will be challenges, changes, unexpected
circumstances, interrupted plans, hurts, and injustices experienced
by every human being at some point in their lives. We will be
asked to adjust our plans, change course, and even encounter
suffering and death. Where do we learn all of the lessons we
need to live life well? Some of them we learn along the way but
much of what we bring to life, positive and negative, comes from
our early beginnings, our families. This is our early world and
provides the blueprint for how we see the bigger, more inclusive
world, which unfolds before us.
Our families of origin can be sources of grace, heartache or a
combination of both. Families are intended to be pivotal in
providing us with proper social structure and understanding, a
support system, lessons about relationships and communication,
and the unconditional acceptance and love we so desperately
crave. They can also determine whether we have an accessible
and healthy relationship with God. Many of life’s challenges can
literally bring us to our knees and require that we possess a
strength of character that resides well beyond the superficialities
of our world. At some point we will all need three coping gifts
that can be given to us only by God: faith, hope, and love. Our
families help us learn that we are not the ones responsible for
their creation, but God!
Our experience of early family life colors all of our relationships
and what we expect to achieve from life in general. Resolving
conflicts, dealing with difficulty and suffering, celebrating
accomplishments, prioritizing our needs, listening to God’s call,
understanding relationships, understanding disappointment,
learning about the virtues and living a centered focused life are
all lessons our families either succeed in teaching or do not. To
succeed, as God has designed and ordered our world, is to
discover his presence and then trust that Presence. The Holy
Family can teach even the most dysfunctional family how to best
use God’s gifts of faith, hope, and love to find him and do his
will. Their simple humble example is always before us, showing
us the way.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

weeks of lessons.
• Grade 2 will only meet at St. Bernard Church the first

WEEKEND MASSES IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD
Parishes are open for the public celebration of weekend Masses, provided that no more than a total of 100 socially distanced persons are present at a given Mass in keeping with the updated limitation set by the State of Connecticut, which went into effect on November 6th. All previously set requirements will still be observed during both weekday and weekend Masses. This includes the wearing of masks while in church and the limitation on singing, which may be done by a cantor but will not include participation by the congregation.
The dispensation from the Sunday obligation granted to all Catholics of the Archdiocese of Hartford by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair extends through Tuesday, February 16, 2021. The elderly, the sick, those who care for someone who is vulnerable, or those who are fearful or anxious are encouraged not to attend or feel obligated to attend at this time.
Live-streamed Masses, both daily and weekend, will continue on our website (sjjenfield.org) so that those who cannot attend will be able to participate and remain connected with the parish.
If you decide to attend Mass, please be charitable by protecting others and yourself. Please read and follow the guidelines below.
• If you or someone in your household is ill, especially with fever or flu-like symptoms or conjunctivitis, please do not enter the church.
• At all times, including entering and exiting the church, practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet from people who do not live in your household.
• You must wear a face mask or cloth face covering. The proper way to wear the mask effectively is to have the mask cover both your nose and mouth.
• Do not shake hands with others. • Use hand sanitizers. • Do not congregate to socialize before or after Mass.
PLEASE TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY FOR YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY, AND YOUR FELLOW PARSHIONERS.
YEAR OF SAINT JOSEPH: DECEMBER 8, 2020 - DECEMBER 8, 2021 On Tuesday, December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Francis proclaimed that the next 12 months will be a Year of Saint Joseph. The pope made the announcement on the 150th anniversary of Pope Pius IX’s proclamation of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. In addition to an Apostolic Letter from the Holy Father entitled Patris Corde, an official decree was promulgated by the Apostolic Penitentiary establishing the Year of Saint Joseph so that every member of the faithful, following Saint Joseph’s example, may strengthen their life of faith daily in the complete fulfillment of God’s will.
The decree added that to mark the year the pope had granted special indulgences to Catholics who recite any approved prayer or act of piety in honor of Saint Joseph, noting the current health emergency and extending the indulgence in a particular way to the elderly, the sick, the dying, and all those who for legitimate reasons are unable to leave the house. To reaffirm the universality of Saint Joseph’s patronage in the Church, the decree also encouraged prayers and pious acts during the year on days specially connected to Saint Joseph, including: the Solemnity of Saint Joseph the Husband of Mary, the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, the Feast of the Holy Family, Saint Joseph Sunday in the Byzantine tradition, and the 19th of each month and every Wednesday (days dedicated to the saint in the Latin tradition).
May we use the next 12 months in particular to “grow in devotion to the Patron of the Universal Church” (Redemptoris Custos, Pope Saint John Paul II).
