Pastor’s Report I can’t think of too many things I enjoy less than going to the Doc-tor. Consequently, it is easy for me to come up with all kinds of excuses to justify not going. I don’t think I’m alone in this phenom-enon. But, when I reflect on the excuses I make to avoid the Doc-tor’s office, they all seem to originate from two foundational areas. The first is pride. How often do we rationalize that we don’t need any help. Maybe it’s not really that bad. Maybe it will just get bet-ter on its own. Maybe I can just look up how to treat it online. I don’t have time to be sick, let alone fix it. Sometimes an element of shame can even creep into some of these excuses, which is why we try to cover up our pains lest anyone discover how hurt we really are. I think it can be helpful to think of our sinfulness in the same way. For much like most of the illnesses or woundedness in our bodies is not self-inflicted, so too, it is with most of the woundedness of our soul. More often than not, our sinfulness is not the result of some evil concocted out of the darkness of our being. No. Rather, the sinful things we do are the results of wounds and pains that have been afflicted on us from the outside. This is almost always the case with the sins of the flesh that usually result from some image or action we’ve witnessed or experienced. However, it is also why the relative familiar cliché, “hurt people hurt people” rings so true. For my belief is that there are not very many evil people in the world. However, there are countless numbers of hurt people that, lashing out in their pain, are hurting others in, not only numerous, but sometimes devastating ways. Yet how often do use the same excuses to avoid the Doctor that we do to avoid the confessional? Sometimes it’s easy for us to think that our sins aren’t that bad. After all, the more used to them we become, the more we adjust to the disability. Just as the Farmer that lives in constant back pain becomes accustomed to it to the point he doesn’t even recognize how good it would be not to have it, so, too, our sinfulness can become so familiar that we simply be-come so used to it that we can”t imagine how good it would feel to be rid of it. And, it is really the height of pride to think we can fix our sinful habits on our own. After all, most of the time, we’ve been struggling with them for years or even decades. If we could have changed them by ourselves, wouldn’t we have done so already? Of course, shame plays a more prominent role with the wounded-ness of our souls than it does with the woundedness of our bodies. For all too often we buy into the lie that we can only be loved when we do good things. Nothing could be further from the truth. For if God could change, He would not be God. Therefore, His love for us can’t change either. He doesn’t love us more when we do a good thing or less when we do evil ones. Yet, we can become so con-vinced of this lie, that our sinfulness becomes so overwhelmingly shameful that we refuse to expose it to the divine physician in the sacrament of confession by pretending it is either not that bad or that we can fix it ourselves. I think this is part of the reason why Jesus, in St. Matthew’s gospel, reminds us that “nothing is concealed that will not be revealed.” If you’re anything like me, this is terrifying. While I’m perfectly com-fortable with everyone knowing that I’m a sinner, I’m incredibly un-comfortable with the idea of everyone knowing EVERY sin I’ve ever committed. The only reason for this shame is that I don’t trust that others could love me if they knew who I really was.

While this may indeed be true for some, it is certainly not true for God. Maybe this is why Jesus addresses the second source of our rationalization for not going to the Doctor immediately after reveal-ing that all our secrets are going to be made known to all. Whereas our first set of reasons for not going to the doctor flow from our pride, the second set of reasons flow from our lack of trust. How often do we avoid the Doctor because we think he cannot help us, or that the cure will be worse than the disease or because we think what he will prescribe will change our lives too dramatically? What is this but a lack of trust in the Doctor or the process? While this may make some sense given that the Doctor is only a temporal authority, it makes no sense using these same types of excuses to avoid the Divine Physician. Yet, how often do we believe that our spiritual wounds are irredeemable, incurable and will plague us forever? How often do we buy the lie that God prefers to punish us rather than cure us? What is this but a lack of trust in the Divine Physician?

This is why Jesus, after reminding us that there is no way of hiding our sinfulness from anyone, let alone God, reassures us of His love for us. In one of the funniest lines in all of the gospels, Je-sus is going to say, “Be not afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows!” Gee, thanks, Jesus. That makes me feel so loved given that two sparrows are sold for a penny. But, to accen-

tuate the depth of what Jesus is saying, He also reminds us that even the hairs on our head are counted. Do any of us know how many hairs are on our heads? Do any of us care? What does that mean that God loves us more than we love ourselves and God knows us better than we know ourselves? He’s fascinated with us, obsessed with us, enthralled by us. Clearly, He only wants to help. And curing the spiritual woundedness that infects our soul is pre-cisely why He sent His Son into the world. Of course, just like a medical doctor might give us a regimen to fix our physical affliction that is difficult and changes our lives more dramatically than we’d like, so, too, God, the Divine Physician, may prescribe something similar. However, unlike the medical doctor, there is no limitation to either God’s knowledge or God’s love. We know the prescription will cure us because we know the Divine Phy-sician loves us. Let’s face it, if we could be assured of returning to full health, the health we had in our early 20s, would there be any prescription or regimen we’d be unwilling to undergo? This is precisely what the Divine Physician offers us. He doesn’t always offer the easy path, but He does always offer the infallible path that leads to healing.

HOLY FAMILY PARISH POLICIES & SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES

As the weather gets warmer, especially during these mid-summer months, life gets a little less formal. To my mind, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, there are a couple of things we want to keep in mind so as to not let our informality become an issue at Mass. (1) The Church, as the home of Jesus Christ, is a sacred space. As such, the clothes we might wear to a ball game, to the river or to the supermarket are not the clothes we should be wearing for Mass. While it’s true that it is better to go to Mass in informal clothing than not going at all, it is equally true that making the sacrifice to dress nicely for Mass is better than not making that sacrifice. (2) In our desire for comfort, it is important to remember the principles of modesty. Modesty necessitates wearing clothing, especially to Mass, that draws attention to our faces rather than some other part of our anatomy. Even though the church buildings can sometimes get quite warm in the summer, it is preferable to suffer a little inconvenience for an hour or so than to be a distraction for someone trying to focus on the Lord. -Fr. Olsen
