SACRED HEART OF JESUS

One of the soldiers, as the
Gospel tells us, opened Jesus’ Side with a
spear, and, immediately,
there came out blood and
water. We must keep
before us this text and the
fact it relates, for they give
us the true meaning of the
Feast we are celebrating.
The importance of the event here related is
strongly intimated, by the earnest and solemn
way in which St. John follows up his narration.
After the words just quoted, he adds: And he that
saw it hath given testimony of it, and his
testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith
true, that ye also may believe, for these things
were done, that the Scripture might be full-filled.
Here the Gospel refers us to the testimony of the
Prophet Zacharias, who, after predicting the
Spirit of grace being poured out upon the house
of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, says:
They shall look upon Him whom they pierced.
And, when they look upon his side thus pierced,
what will they see there, but that great truth
which is the summary of all Scripture — of all
history: — God so loved the world, as to give it
his Only Begotten Son; that whosoever believeth
in him, may not perish, but may have eternal
life? This grand truth was, during the ages of
expectation, veiled under types and figures; it
could be deciphered but by few, and, even then,
only obscurely; but it was made known with all
possible clearness on that eventful day, when, on
Jordan’s banks, the whole sacred Trinity
manifested who was the Elect, the Chosen One,
of the Father, — the Son in whom he was so well
pleased. Yes, it was Jesus of Nazareth, the Son
of Mary: but, there was another revelation, of
deepest interest to us, which had still to be made:
it was — how, and in what way, would the
eternal life brought by this Jesus into the world,
pass from him into each one of us? This second
revelation was made to us, when the soldier’s
spear opened the divine source, and there flowed
from it that Water and Blood, which, as the
Scripture tells us, completed the testimony of the
Blessed Three. There are three, says St, John,
who give testimony in heaven: the Father, the
Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are
One. And there are three that give testimony on
earth: the Spirit, and the Water, and the Blood:
and these three are one, that is, they are one
because they concur in giving the one same
testimony. And, this, continues St. John, is the
testimony: — that God hath given to us eternal
life, and that this life is in his Son. These words
contain a very profound mystery; but we have
their explanation in this Feast, which shows us
how it is through the Heart of the Man-God that
the divine work is achieved, and how, through
that same Heart, the plan, which was conceived,
from all eternity, by the Wisdom of the Father,
has been realized. Dom Prosper Gueranger ______________________________________________________________________________
THE TRUE ENEMIES OF THE CHURCH ARE BAD CATHOLICS (From Rorate) It is a well-known account. Sister Marie Bernarde (Bernadette) Soubirous is in the convent of the Sisters of Charity
in Nevers, it is 1870, war is raging throughout northern France as the Prussian-led German armies march towards
Paris. The first printed version of the account, published while she was still living, is the following. A visitor came to
Bernadette at that time and made her the following questions:
- Did you receive, in the grotto of Lourdes, or after then, any revelations related to the future and fate of France?
Did not the Blessed Virgin deliver any warning for France, any threats?
- No
- The Prussians are at our gates; does that not cause you any fear?
- No.
- There is thus nothing to fear?
- I only fear bad Catholics.
- You do not fear anything else?
- No, nothing else.
These are words of great wisdom from the Saint.
The true enemies of the Church, those who can cause Catholics great harm and peril of damnation, are those who are within, the "bad
Catholics" Saint Bernadette feared so much. And they are more dangerous the more powerful they are, the higher in the Hierarchy
they are, and the more empowered they feel, their fury, deception and bold vulgarity unleashed.

FATHER SAFREED’S REFLECTIONS
Today we continue our meditation on how to make the Psalms a significant part of the life of prayer in our lives.
Over the centuries is has become evident that the prayer life of the Church has divided itself into two halves. I
will call the one half “devotional” and the other half “liturgical.” This is marked by the fact that the Rosary and
other devotions have incorporated themselves into the spirituality of the laymen, while the Divine Office and a
truly liturgical understanding of the Mass has become a hallmark of the clergy. So, it’s not uncommon to see a
disconnect between what is happening on the Altar, and what is happening in the pews. This was one of the
things that the “better spirits” at the time of Vatican II wanted to address: the world of devotionalism amongst
the laity vs. the world of liturgical prayer that became almost exclusively the domain of the priests and bishops.
As Thomas Merton says:
“The very fact that the rosary was originally referred to as the
‘Laymen’s psalter’ reminds us that before the Middle Ages the
lay people participated in the divine office with the clerics, and
chanted the Psalms with them. Other devotions arose only when
the layman no longer understood the Psalms.” [Praying the Psalms, my emphasis]
Pope Pius XII in his great Encyclical “Mediator Dei,” taught how the Psalms [which are of Divine authorship]
and the Divine Office make it possible for us to attain a greater contemplative union with God, which of course
is the “ideal of Christian life.”
We can therefore begin to think of the Psalms on three levels.
Level One: The individual soul before God. Let’s take segments of Psalm 34 for instance:
Judge, O Lord, those who wrong me; take by
storm those who war against me ----
For without cause they hid their snare for my
destruction, without cause they upbraided my soul.
False witnesses have risen up, charging me with things
I knew nothing of ----
And they rejoiced over me.....but felt no remorse.
The just soul, perhaps even the sinful soul, asks God to judge his enemies amidst the distress of great
persecution. This persecution can take the form of either human or diabolical forces --- but most likely both.
Continued next week.

“We must empty Purgatory with Our Prayers”
St. Padre Pio
May 5th Thursday
Remember, also, Lord, Your servants and handmaids below who are gone
hence before us, marked with the sign of faith, and sleep the sleep of peace.
To them, Lord and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we implore You a place of
happiness, light and peace through the same Christ our Lord. Amen
