St. Basil the Great
January 1st O Venerable Father, you became a lover of wisdom,
preferring life with God to all possessions of the
world. Your contemplation of death made you
forsake the wealth of the earth, and by your
perseverance in fastings, you overcame the sting of
passions. By study of the divine law You preserved
the freedom within your soul.
By your generous practice of virtue you subjected the
passions of the flesh to the spirit. You renounced the
flesh, the world, and the princes of the earth; now
you stand in the presence of Christ. Intercede with
Him for great mercy upon our souls.

Let Us Venerate the Baptism of Christ ... Wash Yourselves and Be Clean
I cannot restrain my joy; my heart is
deeply moved and filled with delight.
Forgetting my weakness, I long to
undertake the mission of the great John the
Baptist; though I am not the Forerunner, I
have indeed come from the desert! Christ
receives the sacrament of enlightenment;
or rather He enlightens us with His
brilliance. He is baptized; let us go down
into the water with Him so that we may
also come up with Him. John is baptizing,
and Jesus comes to him. Christ certainly
sanctifies the man who now baptizes Him,
but His purpose is chiefly to bury the old
Adam in the waters and, above all, to
sanctify the waters of the Jordan by His
baptism in them so that just as He was
spirit and flesh, those who would later be
baptized might be sanctified by the power
of the Spirit and by water.
John refuses; Jesus insists. "It is you that
should be baptizing me!" says John. The
torch addresses the Sun, the voice
speaks to the Word. Jesus comes out of
the water, drawing the world with Him,
as it were, and raising it up when it had
hitherto been sunk in the abyss. He sees
the heavens not being rent, but opening
of their own accord. The first Adam had
of old closed heaven to himself and us,
just as he had seen the earthly paradise
being closed to him, with a fiery sword
barring access. The Holy Spirit bears
witness. Here all is in perfect harmony,
for the testimony comes from heaven,
just as He to whom the Spirit bears
witness has come from heaven.
St. Gregory the Theologian
January 6th
The Feast of Theophany (January 6th)
St. Mark describes the baptism in the following words: ‘It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. No sooner had He come up out of the water than He saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon Him. And a voice from heaven said, You are my Beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.’ (Mark 19-11) One important truth revealed to us at Jesus’ Baptism is the dogmatic truth of God exist-ing in three persons. The Father is revealed as the One (voice) who bore witness to Jesus’ Sonship. The Spirit is symbolized as a dove descending from heaven. Christ is identified as the Son of God by the Father’s voice: “You are my Son”. Jesus’ immersion and His blessing of the Jordan water with His right hand signifies the sanctification of the waters by the Lord. Water is no longer an image of death (like the story of Jonah and the whale in the Old Testa-ment) but an image of birth into a new life in Christ.

Prosphora
Prosphora means “offering” in Greek. It is the bread we use on the altar. Many of us know about two kinds of altar bread: one, the wafer that Roman Catholics use, and the Prosphora which Byzantine Christians use for the consecration during the cele-bration of the Divine Liturgy. It is the bread that Jesus would have used at the last supper. It is made from four ingredi-ents: wheat flour, yeast, salt, and water.
When the priest prays the Proskomedia before the liturgy he cuts one triangular portion of the Prosphora which represents the Mother of God. A further nine small triangular portions are cut and they repre-sent the nine orders of angels and saints. Then he cuts as many portions as are needed to represent the deceased mem-bers of the church and the living ones. The preparatory prayers performed at the side altar at the beginning of the liturgy are full of religious meaning and are part of our rich religious culture.

On Behalf Holy Family Knights of Columbus #8499 we wish to thank all parishioners who have donated towards the “Food and Toy Drive”. We had a tremendous response with 275 cans of food, various dry goods, rice, pasta, fish and peanut butter. Delivery of food items went to Sisters of Charity by Brother Leonard Terrick; toys went to Villa Rosa, delivered by Grand Knight Zenon Scraba. The Christmas spirit is a spirit of giving and Holy Family Parish thoughtfulness in reaching out makes giving worthy to the less fortunate in our community. I am sure our contribution was very much appreciated. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
Христос Рождається! Christ is Born! Славіти Його! Let us Glorify Him!
Yours in Christ
