PARISH COUNCIL If you are interested in serving on the Parish Council,

Their eyes were downcast and the pace was slow.

Why these things had happened they did not know.

On their shoulders they bore grief’s heavy load

as they walked that long Emmaus Road.

A stranger joined them as they walked that way.

Slowed His pace to hear what they had to say.

Step by step He walked along with them there

and from the scriptures He began to share.

Grief stricken and saddened they did not know

who it was that joined them walking so slow.

In fellowship sweet He expounded God’s word

and their hearts glowed at everything they heard.

From Moses through the Prophets He made known

of an open tomb and a heavenly throne.

They listened carefully while this Man talked

as together the Emmaus Road they walked.

“Did not the Christ have to suffer,” He said

“and after to be raised up from the dead?”

As they approached the place they were staying,

He acted as though He would not go in.

“The day is far spent, stay with us,” they said

and He entered their house and broke some bread.

At once their eyes were opened and they knew

it was Jesus, but He vanished from the view.

“Did not our heart burn within us,” they said

and up they got and off to Jerusalem sped.

Found the disciples and said “It is true.”

“The Lord has risen and we’ve seen Him too.”

This weekend our entrance hymn is Three Days. The tune for this hymn was written by the English composer, Gustav Holst. Gustavus Theodore von Holst was born in September of 1874. The Holst side of the family was of mixed Swedish, Latvian and German ancestry with at least one professional musician in each of the previous three generations. It was clear from his early years that Gustavus would follow the same calling. Holst’s great-grandfather, Matthias, was born in Riga Latvia, and served as composer and harp-teacher to the Imperial Russian Court in St. Petersburg. He moved his family to England in 1802 where his son, Gustavus, was a composer. He appropriated the aristocratic prefix “von” to the family name in the hope of gaining enhanced prestige and attracting pupils. Gustavus’s son, Adolph, became organist and choirmaster at All Saints’ Church in Cheltenham, England. He also taught piano and gave recitals along with his wife, Clara, a talented singer and pianist. They had two sons, Gustavus and Emil. Gustavus, became Gustav, and Emil became Ernest Cossart, a successful actor in New York and Hollywood. Gustav Holst was taught to play piano and the violin, he enjoyed the former much more. At the age of twelve he took up the trombone at his father’s suggestion, thinking that playing a brass instrument might improve his asthma. He started composing around 1886. His father tried to steer his son away from composition, hoping that he would have a career as a pianist, but Gustav’s health, which in addition to asthma, included poor eyesight and neuritis, made playing the piano difficult. He went on to compose a large number of works across a range of genres, although none achieved comparable success, as his most famous, The Planets. The hymn tune for Three Days is titled Thaxted from the middle section of the Jupiter movement of The Planets. Gustav named it for the English village where he resided most of his life. In 1926, Gustav’s friend, Ralph Vaughan Williams, an English composer of folk songs, included the tune under the title Thaxted for the first time as a hymn in his Songs of Praise collection. This setting was sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. The tune was also used as the basis for the 1982 hymn, O God Beyond All Praising, composed by Michael Perry. This was the recessional hymn at the funeral of U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia, on February 20, 2016. Gustav Holst pursued his career as composer, but is also remembered as a great music teacher. He built up a strong tradition of performance at Morley College where he was musical director, and pioneered music education for women at St. Paul’s Girls School where he taught from 1905 until his death in 1934. Three Days was composed by M. D. Ridge, a female composer, in 1999.

Peter makes reference to the Passover, when the Jews escaped from Egypt because the blood of the paschal lamb was shed. Now they are being saved from sin by the blood of Christ, the Lamb of the New Testament. Gospel: Luke 24:13‑35
