The members of Ministry of Assistance extend their thanks

and appreciation to the PSR students, their families, teach-

ers, and support staff, for food items they donated to our

pantry during the past school year. Their efforts helped to

keep our pantry stocked each month as these children pro-

vided basic food supplies for those in our community who

are in need. The spirit with which these items were given

shows the compassion for those less fortunate in our com-

munity and puts into practice the words of Jesus “to feed

the hungry.”

Pastor’s Notes

Recently, I received a sad letter from an older person, a relative-

ly new member of Holy Martyrs, who described a long illness

that kept her homebound for a year, and the physical challenges

she faced during that time.

What made it so sad for all who minister to the homebound in

our parish is that, during that year, she never told anyone at our

church about her illness. She had gone for a year without the

consolation of the sacraments or regular home visits because her

situation remained unknown to us.

Regularly in our bulletin, a notice reminds parishioners and their

families and friends to let us know when someone is home-

bound, is going to be hospitalized, or is in a nursing home. Even

if they are incapacitated for only a short time, pastoral visits

from our parish can be an important part of their care. Our par-

ish staff and Eucharistic ministers are eager to visit, to offer our

prayers and support as part of their ongoing care. But we need to

know when someone is ill.

The pastoral care of the sick is a central part of Catholic beliefs

and practices. It is one of the ways Jesus reached out to others

and it is a fundamental part of the ministry of the Church today.

One of the most serious responsibilities of family members and

friends during a time of illness is to inform the parish when

someone is ill or incapacitated. It is the only way we can know,

and it is essential so we can respond. Sometimes, people simply

assume the parish staff knows about someone’s illness, but un-

less we hear about it firsthand, we are not able to respond or pro-

vide the care they need and deserve.

Every member of our parish should take this responsibility seri-

ously. As soon as someone you know is not able to come to

church because of illness or incapacity, the parish should be

notified so we can respond and provide timely, meaningful pas-

toral care.

Also, if you or a loved one is going into the hospital or having a

procedure, we encourage you to receive the Sacrament of the

Anointing of the Sick before you go. This sacrament is a power-

ful prayer for health and healing. Hundreds of our parishioners

have received this sacrament in the chapel before or after Mass

or in their home. It is a meaningful way to celebrate God’s pres-

ence when we need that presence the most. Simply let me or a

member of our staff know.

Please keep this in mind. You are an essential part of our

parish’s outreach and care.

God’s Blessings,

Father Steve

Anniversary Mass and Reception

5:30 Mass Saturday, June 7, 2014

All are invited to come share in joy-

ful celebration as we praise and

thank God for Fr. John’s 40 years of

service as a diocesan priest (18

years as Weekend Associate at Holy

Martyrs!) on Saturday, June 7th

at the 5:30 Mass with a

reception to follow.

From golf clubs and hula hoops to cardboard boxes, baseball cards and

teddy bears, many still remember the props from Fr John’s homilies which

brought home the message and helped us to “see” in new ways. Do you have a

photo or story or memory to share? Would you like to help with the celebration?
