Pastoral Care for Appalachia, Kentucky
The Diocese of Lexington in Kentucky was established as
a mission diocese in 1988. Our territory covers 50
counties, 40 of these are within the impoverished area of
the Appalachian Mountains in eastern Kentucky.
In the mountainous
Appalachian region, the
population is less than 1%
Catholic and 60% are reported
to be un-churched. Our
Catholic presence is one of
evangelization and service to
everyone; we strive to be a messenger of hope in very
challenging circumstances. Employment opportunities are
limited so most households require the help of others to
meet their basic needs for food, shelter, and medicine.
Without additional financial support, our Catholic
presence would essentially be absent from this vast
region of the diocese.
Our priests and religious are aging; we rely on lay
leadership and recruit future priests. The mission co-op
program provides an opportunity to educate people
about the Church’s work in Appalachia and brings in
much needed resources for our small parishes and
missions.

projects, please go to

Consider a Gift of Stock to
Support the Ministries of Holy Martyrs
In gratitude for all that God has given us, we, as
Christians, are called to give back to our community and
our church. In addition to the Sunday offertory, one way
of giving back might be transferring appreciated stock
to help Holy Martyrs continue its mission to lead people
to encounter Christ, grow in faith, and make disciples.
By transferring stock directly to our parish, you may be
able to avoid capital gains taxes.
For more information about what you need to do to
make such a gift, please contact
Therese McDonnell at 330-722-6633 or
Catholic Communication Campaign
Connecting Communities in Christ
Thank you for your generosity
toward last week’s collection
for the Catholic Communication
Campaign (CCC). Your support
helps the CCC spread the Gospel message and
connect millions of people with Christ, here in the
United States and around the world.
If you missed the collection, it’s not too late to give!

Hesburgh is a recounting of the life and work of Rev.
Theodore M. Hesburgh, Civil Rights activist from the

Dame for 35 years.
Father Ted played an important role in bringing opposing

We hope you will join us to view and discuss such an important and timely film.
