Celebrating Our Life Together as Church—The People of God
We’re On A Mission From God NEXT SUNDAY OUR PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL will finalize our Parish Planning Report to Archbishop Carlson. Our parish has been working on this report since June 2015 and our work has focused on —
THE PEOPLE OF OUR PARISH There have been three joint meetings of our Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, and Pastoral Leadership Team as well as three General Assemblies all parish members were invited to attend.
DETERMINING THE VIABILITY OF OUR PARISH We developed a picture of our present vitality and stability by assessing our parish as a faith community, a worshiping community, a community of service and transformation, and an evangelizing community. We also assessed how well we administer our parish community.
DECIDING PARISH MODELS FOR THE FUTURE Finally, we discussed viable options for the future and now have our preferred plans for the re-organization of our parish should that be desirable or necessary in the future.
Increasingly there are fewer priests available to serve the parishes of our Archdiocese. We now believe that there are several different ways we could organize a viable parish if we had ONE fulltime priest or NO fulltime priest.
“Consult not your fears, but your hopes and dreams.
Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential.
Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in,
but with what it is still possible for you to do.”
Pope John XXIII, Opening Address to the Bishops
of the 2nd Vatican Council
After our Council approves our final report to the Archbishop a summary of the report will be published in our bulletin—probably in early February.
I am deeply grateful to our parish leaders for taking on the responsibility of overseeing the work involved in this assessment and report. And many thanks to all the parishioners who participated in the discussions on our viability for the future. We have done good work and God will bless it!
THIS SUNDAY THE CHURCH OF ST. LOUIS will gather for Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis to pray for the preservation of
peace and justice in our metropolitan community and our country. For the past 40 years our Church has come together on the 3rd Sunday of January for this celebration and to commemorate the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Archbishop Robert Carlson will preside for the celebration and Father Arthur Cavitt, Pastor of St. Nicholas Parish in St. Louis will be the homilist. Immediately following Mass there will be a reception and awards presentation ceremony for the 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Model of Justice honorees in Boland Hall. All in our parish are again encouraged to attend and participate in this year’s celebration.
Join me in offering congratulations to Emily Mach, a member of our parish and student at Trinity Catholic High School. On Sunday Emily will receive a Model of Justice Award. She is one of 39 students representing parishes and schools across the Archdiocese who will be honored for putting into practice the ideals of equality and solidarity so evident in Dr. King’s life.

YOUR BEST Give to the world the best you have and the best will come back to you. —Anonymous
SLEEPING PILLS: A RISKY BUSINESS? Many drugs are available to treat insomnia, but their side effects
can be risky. On the surface, sleeping aides can seem like the perfect cure for insomnia. Though they do have legitimate uses, sleeping aides also come with significant risks and side effects. First of all, you can quickly build up a tolerance to this medication which then requires you to take larger doses to get the same effect. However, if you take a high enough dose it could depress your breathing and possibly cause death. To decrease this risk, don’t take sleeping aides longer than 7-10 days at a time. Second, sleep aides, like Ambien, may linger in your body in the morning and impair your reflexes, like driving ability. Some sleep aides can cause erratic behaviors like sleep walking or amnesia. They also increase the risk of falling if you get up at night or early morning. Talk with your doctor about sleep habits and best possible ways to help you sleep better. Also, try Valerian or Melatonin, natural plan remedies that aid in falling asleep. Everydayhealth.com See you soon, S. Rose, SSND
To the Parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus, As we begin a new year, we would like to thank those who continue to support our work in the city of St. Louis. We are very grateful for the seasonal donation of food to our food pantry. The specialty items you provide are a special treat to the 400 families we serve each month. Thank you for your support of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Food Pan-try. In the words of Mother Teresa “We know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if the drop were not there,

On behalf of the clients we serve, thank you to everyone who responded so generously to our request for donations over the past two months. As usual, you all responded whole-heartedly to help us help others on your behalf. From the donations in the monthly blue envelopes, numerous anonymous donations, memorials, and food items, to the overwhelming response to our request for donations of house-hold items, clothing and furniture for the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store when the truck was here the weekend of November 21-22, you never cease to make us proud! We are so grateful for your ongoing support. Without the help of generous parishioners like you, we wouldn’t be able to continue our work of helping the needy and those suffering a temporary set-back. We wish you a happy new year, and may God bless you for your continuing generosity!

On January 27th, Missourians for the Unborn will be organizing a Rally in the 1st Floor Rotunda at the Mis-souri State Capitol in support of HB 1794...the "All Lives Matter Act". If you are PRO LIFE, we hope you will make plans to attend the rally to show (y)our Legislators that we want Missouri to follow the lead of other states and become a PRO LIFE State! PLEASE tell everyone you know to attend so we can have a great crowd....legislators notice when large num-bers of their constituents "invade" the Capitol! There will be speakers at the rally and MFTU will also have computers set up to help you find your legislators' offices in order to deliver cards to urge them to support this life-saving legislation ...and to also become a co-sponsor of the bill. HB 1794 has been prefiled and has had a second read. The next step will be assignment to a committee. So far there are 6 co-sponsors in the House and one legislator in the Senate who has agreed to carry/file the bill in the Senate....BUT we need as many co-sponsors as we can possibly get. We want the support for this legislation to "snowball"! MFTU recognizes the deplorable atrocities against the most innocent of Missourians...our unborn...and strive to eliminate the misguided opinion of the unelected adjudicators of life and abide by the Laws of our Nation and our State. Therefore, the mission of Missourians for the Unborn is to secure the natural right of life for all unborn persons in Missouri. NOTE: Even if you are unable to attend the Rally...we hope you will contact your State Rep and urge them to join bill sponsor, Rep. Mike Moon, in co-sponsoring and supporting HB 1794! And also contact your State Senator asking him/her to join Sen. Ed Emery in sponsoring a companion bill in the Senate. The family of Tony Rehagen would like to thank everyone involved with the preparation for Tony’s funeral. A very heartfelt thank you goes to Father Mike, Sister Rose, the funeral choir and the ladies who prepared the luncheon. Tony truly treasured his relationship with the people of the parish. We couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate his final Mass than at Holy Name of Jesus, a place he call his spiritual home for 55 years. Terry, Debbie and Randy Rehagen, and Melissa
