Father in heaven, you sent us your only Son to redeem us and to build your kingdom on earth. Please give us the wisdom

and strength we need to follow His call. Grant to the faithful a spirit of generosity, that Church vocations may flourish. Bless our priests with holiness and courage, that they may lead your people to Christ. Help all sisters and brothers to fulfill their sacred promises and so be effective signs of your kingdom. Lord, invite more men and women to your service. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Catholic Home Missions

Collection

April 24 & 25, 2010

Right here in the United States, some dioceses are unable to provide fundamental pastoral care for their faithful. These “home mission” dioceses cannot support an adequate number of priests. They cannot afford funding for youth ministry programs or reli-gious education. This week we take up a collection for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Help strengthen the Church at home with a generous donation.

FIRST COMMUNION CONGRATULATIONS to all the chil-dren who will make their First Com-munion on May 2, 2010 at 9:30 A.M. Please keep them in your prayers.

MAY CROWNING On May 1, 2010 at 10:30 AM, the Holy Name Religious Education Students will be crowning Mary at the grotto. The students and those who plan to

attend are requested to bring flowers.

FAZo Doble! by Fr. Arnold Zamora In last weekend’s column, I mentioned a litany of works with their corre-sponding value that had been done and still need to be done at our parish. A parishioner after reading my column and being sympathetic to me ex-

claimed: “Poor guy!” I remember a story of a little girl who gave

two dollars to a pastor after the mass. The priest said: “Oh, thank you! But why are you giving this to me?” The little girl replied: “My dad said you are a poor preacher!” “Actually, she continued, mum says you’re the poorest preacher we ever had. So here’s another two dollars.”

I guess, “poor guy” is better than a “poor preacher.” Let us just leave it that way for now.

With all the construction work and repairs in our church and in every church, I wish construction and infrastructure subjects are taught in the semi-nary. The fact is there are so many things in life that were never taught in school. There are strategies and techniques not available in the books and opera-tions manual. A lot of things we learn through ex-perience. As the old adage says, “experience is the best teacher.” Learning and discoveries are endless and so is God’s providence. A pastor was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last min-ute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the pastor paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up." At that mo-ment, the substitute organist played "The Star Span-gled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist! One of the reasons why we need to fix our church organ ($40,000+) is so that we can make the people STAND UP! And we can dance a “paso doble” and try my FAZO DOBLE, our “two step” towards our accomplishment.

Dear Padre

Why do we fast one hour before Communion? My grandmother says Catholics used to fast from midnight until they received Communion. When did the fasting time change to only an hour, and why? Ellen Dear Ellen, The ancient discipline of fasting before Com-munion became a universal practice by the fifth cen-tury. Until 1953, everyone refrained from consum-ing food, water, and medicine from midnight to the time of Communion. In 1953 and 1957, Pope Pius XII reduced the fast from food to three hours and from water for one hour (Christus Dominus and Sacram Communionem). In 1966 Pope Paul VI further reduced the fast to one hour and allowed water and medicine at any time (Poenitemini). In 1973 he reduced the fast for the sick and elderly to fifteen minutes before Communion when one hour is prohibitive (Immensae Caritatis). The loosening of the restrictions was in no way intended to lessen the reverence for the Eucharist. The changes were made to allow as many Catholics as possible to receive the Eucharist, which can be difficult when priests are in short supply. For the same reason, Immensae Caritatis also allowed the practice of having extraordinary ministers give Communion. Despite the changes to the Communion fast, unity and uniformity have been maintained. Catho-lics are free to fast before Communion beyond the duration and degree currently prescribed.
