BACKGROUNDCapital Priorities submission to request an
addition to Holy Name of Mary Catholic Secondary School in 2013, 2015, 2016 & 2017
In 2018 the Ministry of Education approved Capital Priorities Funding for a 357-pupil place addition at Holy Name of Mary
Ministry funding allocation $10.3 million for construction of an addition (does not include funding for renewal work or upgrades to the existing permanent facility)

Current enrolment: 726 students
Existing 441-pupil place bricks and mortar building
113-pupil place Relocatable Classroom Module (RCM) which also contains the cafeteria, servery, workrooms and washrooms
17 portables on site
Limited parking
No kiss and ride

PROJECT SCOPEDemolish RCM and remove 17 portables
Construct 17 teaching classrooms (8 first floor, 9 second floor)
New cafeteria with raised stage area and integrated control room, new kitchen, servery, and storage
New media arts room with sound control room and green wall
New barrier-free washrooms on each floor, new elevator to second floor, teacher work rooms on first and second floor levels, and resource room
Expanded parking and new kiss and ride
New capacity of HNM: 798 pupil places4

Building Permit application: End of November 2018
Tender: March/April 2019
Asbestos abatement/Construction start: July 2019
Substantial completion: May 2020
Total completion: July 2020

HOLY NAME OF MARY 2019/2020ACCOMMODATION STRATEGYDue to the nature of the work on site to facilitate demolition and construction of an addition, for the safety of staff and students, relocation is required
RCM will be demolished which includes the cafeteria and classrooms
All 17 portables will be removed to accommodate construction equipment
One classroom which is part of the core building will be demolished
Insufficient capacity in core building to accommodate students
Asbestos abatement is required in part of the core building
No available parking for staff
No access for buses or student drop-off/pick-up area
Safety of students will be compromised due to equipment delivery
Shutdown periods for mechanical/electrical systems required

Create a split shift for HNM students in alternate neighbourhood location

The Board of Trustees is considering transportation of HNM students for the duration of the temporary hosting arrangements
Bell times will be amended during the temporary hosting to fund the busing arrangements
One-time busing costs will be added to budget for approval by trustees
Bus stops will be located at centralized hubs identified by STOPR by the end of March 2019
NEXT STEPSThursday, November 15:
Grade 8 information night at HNM to provide overview of the relocation plan to potential grade 9 students
Tuesday, November 20:
Grade 8 information night at St. Kateri Tekakwitha
January 2019:
Bring forward approval request for funding to bus students in 2019/2020 and for minor improvement to St. Kateri Tekakwitha to accommodate HNM
