Rules & Regulations

1. All awards and scholarships are open to any student entering a post-secondary institution in the year following their grade 12 year unless otherwise posted.

2. Only those courses taken in-class at Holy Redeemer will be used in the

calculation of award averages. 3. If a student is not entering a post-secondary institution in the year following their

grade 12 year, the award or scholarship shall be held over for them for one year in their name. If the student does not claim this award at this time, the award shall be presented to the second place candidate from the student’s graduating year.

4. With the exception of awards for the highest grade in the course and non-application awards, students are asked to apply for awards. Only the recipient will be contacted with a response.

5. On awards night, award recipients will receive a letter congratulating them on their achievement, as well as asking them for a letter from their post-secondary institution giving proof of enrolment.

6. In the event of a tie, one of two things will occur: a. Upon permission of the donor, each recipient will receive the full amount. b. In the event the donor does not increase the amount, the award or

scholarship money will be divided between the candidates.

7. Recipients are expected to write a note of thanks to the donor.

Tips for Applying for Scholarships

Start your search early – Begin your search early in the school year. You can

even start searching in grade 11! Do lots of research. The websites listed below are a good place to start. Check out post-secondary scholarships – Each post-secondary institution has

scholarships specific to their school. Some links to post-secondary institutions are listed below.

Check out the application deadline. o Some deadlines are early in the year while others are not until the end of

the school year. o Current applications tend to arrive 4 – 6 weeks before the application

deadline. o Make sure you have the current years application. o Deadlines change from year to year so check regularly

Plan ahead - It takes time to get letters of recommendation, transcripts, make copies of files, write essays, etc. for each scholarship.

Be organized – Review deadlines and requirements, read instructions carefully, answer completely and include all information required.

Expand your list of possibilities – Check out credit unions, your workplace, your parent’s workplace, professional groups in your community, the church you belong to, oil companies in your area, local grocery stores, local volunteer agencies, etc.

Apply, Apply, Apply – apply for any scholarships that you qualify for. Use your time wisely and apply to those that you have a shot at.

Curtis Eggimann Memorial Drama Scholarship ($500) Curtis Eggimann attended Holy Redeemer High from 2003 to 2004. He was friendly and caring and had a passion for drama, in which he excelled. During his time at Holy Redeemer, he participated in two drama productions and became a leader in theatrical activities. Students and staff shared a common respect for him, and admired him for his perseverance and determination. Curtis died in December 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. His memory lives on with this scholarship.

Criteria Awarded to the student, who best exemplifies dramatic skills and talent Experience with drama, either in acting, directing, producing, design, or

backstage work at Holy Redeemer High Exhibits a friendly personality, and is a positive member of the school

community.

Preference will be given to a student who: Wishes to continue with drama, either in an acting, directing, producing,

backstage, or design. Wishes to become a drama educator through a post-secondary institution. Achieves a high academic standing. Has experience within the courses of Drama or Technical Theatre. Participates in extra-curricular drama activities at Holy Redeemer High. Participates in drama related events outside the school.

Awarded to the student(s) who is/are proceeding to further education in veterinary science, agriculture, medical or health related fields, or general science related field with specialization leading to careers in conservation, ecology, zoology, science education, or nursing

SCHOOL BASED AWARDS REQUIRING APPLICATION NOTE: Application deadlines may not be exact. Premier’s Citizenship Award

The Province of Alberta awards a plaque to students who support and contribute to Alberta communities through public service and volunteer endeavours in school sponsored, community or extracurricular activities. It is awarded to a student who displays outstanding characteristics in each of the following: citizenship; leadership: community service, volunteer work and must also have shown initiative and had a positive impact in the community and/or school. (Academic achievement is not a requirement for this award). Note: This award is not dependant on entering an accredited post-secondary institution.

Amount Recipients receive a plaque from the Premier and become eligible for:

o the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Citizenship Medal, $5,000 and a letter of commendation from the Lieutenant Governor, and

o the Alberta Centennial Scholarship in the amount of $2,005.

How to Apply 1. Write a one page letter outlining leadership, citizenship, community service

activities or volunteer work. 2. Provide two letters of reference from someone who has known you for at

least one year either through school, community or volunteer activities. 3. Send application and letters to:

CWL Award ($300) The Catholic Women's League of Canada is a national organization rooted in gospel values calling its members to holiness through service to the people of God. Awarded to a student in grade 11 and 12 who shows community involvement. It is donated by the Catholic Women’s League. Note: This award is not dependant on entering an accredited post-secondary institution.

Preference will be given to a student who: Shows involvement with the local Sacred Heart Parrish. Shows strong volunteerism within the community. Shows strong volunteerism within the school.

How to Apply 1. Write a one-page letter outlining church, school and/or community

involvement. 2. Provide at least one letter of reference from a supervisor of this involvement. 3. Attach any additional information. 4. Send letters and any additional information to

HRH Scholar/Athlete Student Award ($500)

Description Many students commit to both academics and athletics. This award has been

developed by the Campbell and the Stang families in recognition of such students. It is awarded to a student for a combination of excellence in both academics and athletics. Preference will be given to a student who:

Participates in at least one athletic activity (community or school based) Maintains a minimum academic average of 75% Is enrolled in grade 12. In the event that there are no suitable candidates in

grade 12, students enrolled in grade 10 or 11 will be considered Intends to attend a post-secondary institution.

Woodland Rivers Alberta Teachers Association Local #40 Scholarship ($300) The Alberta Teachers Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes, and advances public education, safeguards standards of professional practice and serves as an advocate for its members. It will be awarded to a students who best exemplifies the spirit of education. This may be demonstrated through a:

o sincere desire to learn and to help others learn o willingness to assume a leadership role o cooperative and mature relationship with school staff o compassion and empathy for others

EDSON BASED AWARDS REQUIRING APPLICATION

THE EDSON & DISTRICT HEALTHCARE CENTRE AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP ($1500)

Funded by the Edson & District Healthcare Centre Auxiliary Centre, offered to anyone going on to study in the healthcare field. It is awarded to students who is a graduate of one of the Edson High Schools with preference given to the most recent graduates. Students going directly into a nursing program will be given first consideration. However, those entering a health science course at a college or university will also be considered. Proof of registration is required.

Funded by the Joe Wynne Branch No. 51 in memory of Mr. Floyd Olsen who dedicated his life to the service of his country in WWII and to the community of Edson. It will be awarded to a student who is a graduate of one of the Edson High Schools with preference given to the most recent graduates.

How to Apply: A minimum of 500 word essay stating the following: where you plan on going

to school, what courses do you plan on taking and why, how have you demonstrated leadership in your school, how have you demonstrated community involvement, how will winning the bursary assist you and your family with your educational planning, what are your long term goals and aspirations, what are your plans for continued community involvement.

EDSON ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION LADIES AUXILLARY ($500) Awarded to a student in financial need who is entering their first year of a certificate, diploma, or university program. How to Apply: See Mrs. Tobin for application

KINETTE CLUB OF EDSON ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP ($1000)

Funded by the Edson Kinette Club, offered to anyone who is a good student and has high ideals with future career plans. It will be awarded to a student who is a graduate of one of the Edson High Schools, must have been accepted to an accredited post-secondary institution for attendance in Fall of current year, and who is involved in the community is some aspect of volunteering. Proof of registration is required.

How to Apply: Send transcripts of most recent grades A letter of acceptance form post-secondary institution A letter about YOU – including your scholastic and leisure participation, your

community involvement, your career goals, and how your career will benefit the community.

It is awarded to a student who is a graduate of one of the Edson High Schools, has been accepted to an accredited post-secondary institution for attendance in Fall of current year, and who has community involvement.

It is awarded to a student who has completed grade 12 with a C+ average, is a full-time resident of Western Canada, and must be seeking a trade in the oil and natural gas industry. VELVET ENERGY (Up to $1500): At Velvet Energy, we believe all individuals should have the opportunity to further their education regardless of their financial position. YELLOWHEAD AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY (Two - $500) Funded by the Yellowhead Agricultural society and donated to a grade 12 student furthering their education at a post-secondary institution. The applicant (or parent/guardian) must hold a current Yellowhead Agricultural Society membership and must be an active volunteer within the Yellowhead Agricultural Society.

Alberta Fish and Game Association ($500) o Awarded to a student who is enrolled in a minimum of one year

environmental sciences or related program. The student or parent must be a member of the Alberta Fish and Game Association or an affiliated Fish and Game club.
