HOLY SPIRIT, DOVECOT - MONTHLY NEWSLETTER March 2016 Wardens WELCOME to the second edition of our new format Holy Spirit Monthly Newsletter. I hope you are enjoying it and find it just as informative as the previous style. In case you mislay your paper copy, you can still read it From the on our website if you have internet access. Just visit www.holyspiritdovecot.org/publications where you can download and read the latest newsletter. On 6 th March we will be celebrating Mothering Sunday, when we give thanks for the example and care of our Mothers. Our children of “Free Spirit” are preparing for the service so please join us and take a small memento away to either give to your Mother or just to simply use to remember her. We are now over halfway through Lent and looking forward to Easter, but before that we have Palm Sunday & Holy Week; a time when all of our Lenten preparations come into focus as we think about the contrast between Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey to the cheers and celebrations of the population, only for them to turn against him less than a week later. The quiet gathering in the upper room on Thursday when Jesus first celebrated what we now do at the Eucharist; the dark turbulent time of Good Friday when Jesus was crucified and the joy of the Easter morning when rose and appeared before Mary and the disciples. This year we will be joined by the Archdeacon of Liverpool – the Venerable Ricky Panter who will guide our worship through these events. We look forward to Ricky joining us. Please come along and join in our Holy Week and Easter worship – details are in the diary on the next page. Best Wishes John

NEW DEANERY In 2015 Liverpool Diocese started the process to create 4 Archdeaconries aligned with local authority boundaries. Each Archdeaconry is made up of a number of Deaneries. A Deanery is made up of a group of neighbouring parishes for administrative purposes. These elect members to a synod who meet to discuss local issues and wider policy. Holy Spirit, along with St John Knotty Ash were formerly in Huyton Deanery although the parishes were part of Liverpool local authority so as part of the alignment of Archdeaconries, both parishes moved into West Derby Deanery from the beginning of January. The other parishes in West Derby Deanery are: St Christopher, Norris Green St Paul, Croxteth, All Saints, Stoneycroft St Marys, West Derby St James, West Derby St Annes, Stanley St Pauls, Derby Lane Christchurch, Norris Green Good Shepherd, Norris Green St Cuthberts, Croxteth Park St Andrews, Clubmoor St John the Evangelist, Knotty Ash Holy Spirit, Dovecot

CUTHBERT, Bishop of Lindisfarne, Missionary,

20th March

Cuthbert was probably born in the Scottish lowlands around the

year 640. At the age of eight a prophetic remark from a playmate

turned his mind to sober and godly thoughts, and his upbringing

as a shepherd gave him ample time for prayer. One night he saw

in the sky a dazzling light and angels carrying a soul up to

heaven, and resolved to dedicate his life to God. Some years

later Cuthbert came to Melrose Abbey asking to be admitted as a

monk. It was from here that he began his missionary work,

which he continued from Lindisfarne when he became abbot

there. Consecrated bishop in 685, he remained an indefatigable

traveller and preacher, walking all over his diocese, and spending

time as a hermit on Farne Island in between. After only a year,

however, he felt his end coming and resigned his office, dying on

Farne in the company of a few of his monks.

HISTORY OF MOTHERING SUNDAY

During the 16th century, people returned to their mother church, the

main church or cathedral of the area, for a service to be held on Laetare

Sunday. This was referred to as gone "a-mothering". In later times,

Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a

day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and

other family members. It was often the only time that whole families

could gather together. On this day the children would pick wild flowers

along the way to place in the church or give to their mothers.

Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into Mothering Sunday.

By the 1920’s the festival had all but disappeared, but it was revived

through the influence of American and Canadian soldiers serving

abroad during World War II; the traditions of Mothering Sunday, still

practiced by the Church of England and Church of Ireland were merged

with the newly imported “Mother’s Day” traditions and celebrated in the

wider Catholic and secular society. UK-based merchants saw the

commercial opportunity in the holiday and relentlessly promoted it in

the UK; by the 1950s, it was celebrated across all the UK.

Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent.

On Mothering Sunday we pray especially for mothers and for stepmothers,

grandmothers, godmothers, and all those women who have loved and laughed, wept and worked to care for others. Let us be a source of encouragement, support and friendship for them as they courageously accept this inspiring responsibility. Bless all parents and all carers and strengthen those families living under stress. We know that Mothering Sunday is not a celebration but a time of heartache for many, may they have the comfort of knowing that your love for them is constant, your understanding is perfect, your compassion is never-ending

Bishop Paul’s Easter Message

The empty tomb

A central image from the Easter story is the empty tomb. The stone rolled away, the body gone. Jesus is not contained in the prison of the stone-cold cave; he is not imprisoned by death. He is free, alive and unpredictably present in the world. As we grasp that, we are freed to grasp the central hope and promise of Easter. The kingdom does not end in defeat. Jesus’ story reaches a climax as he bursts through the barrier of life and death. The tomb is vacated because Jesus is alive and present in the world. And then the energy, the ‘dunamis’ as the apostle Paul says, the dynamic power that God used to raise Jesus from the dead, becomes available to us in the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost. An outpouring that reminds us that God cannot be contained. Not by a tomb, not by a temple, not by a church building. He is alive and present in the lives of those who are working to make a bigger difference. Alive, present and recognised in the lives of those who make a bigger difference in His name. The image of the empty tomb presents a challenge for me and for all who are actively seeking for and praying for the renewal of the church. We see in it the certainty that God is working in the world, that his mission – as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28 – “go make disciples of all” – calls all to be “out there”. So how does this speak to our efforts, our desire, our belief under God that in this Diocese we are called to be a bigger church making a bigger difference? We believe that the Church is ordained by God as the best way to learn more about what it is to be a disciple. We know Jesus is the Lord of the church and we are called to worship Him and to come to the Father through Him in the Spirit’s power. And so we commit ourselves to worship in the fullest sense, offering our whole beings to be that living sacrifice of service that follows the model of Jesus. And over the centuries we have shaped buildings to help us in this. Some beautiful. - some less so - some functional - some that have become difficult to use in any meaningful sense. These are vessels of love - not empty tombs - but sadly they have the potential to be a

place that Jesus has left, where we don’t feel the presence of the living Lord, where people endure a sterile, unattractive and joyless expression of their faith. But of course they also have the potential to be much more. To be houses of the bigger church, bursting with energy, hope and presence. Full of those loving the Lord, seeking to love Him more, taking risks, falling down and being picked up again. Doing it all in the strength of the Lord. The building, not an empty tomb, but a vibrant hub for the community. A place of love and service where people recognise the risen Lord in the Christians that worship there. Jesus broke free of the tomb once for all, so that God’s kingdom would not be contained but would grow through the world. This Easter our joy and our calling in our turn is to release the great news of Jesus’ resurrection, sharing His love in all places with all people.

Christ is risen :

He is risen indeed.

Alleluia!
