From the Pastor’s Desk… Reconciliation can be very difficult. Yet, the Gospels (and the ministry of Jesus Christ) proclaim this most necessary action of forgiveness and healing as essential to the life of every Christian community and disciple. Without reconciliation, old wounds turn into grudges, resentment, and revenge.
We all know what usually happens among us in daily living. Offenses and hurts – large and small – become the stuff of gossip. It happens more often than not that all kinds of people know what a particular individual did to someone. How often has the offender been approached first in private – spoken to or given the chance to make amends?
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers a way forward in reconciling an individual whose fault (or sin) has caused great harm. But notice what Jesus did not say – treat that person as an enemy or an adversary. Jesus’ call for reconciliation aims at winning the person back. This process requires not only more forthrightness than is normally given, but also an open-ended commitment. Christian love knows no limits in attempting to extend forgiveness rather than shame or blame.
All this seems difficult, and it is. If forgiveness and reconciliation were easy, we would all do more of it all the time. The point of today’s Gospel is this: our love as disciples is always directed toward healing and winning someone back. We should not be the judge, jury and “executioner” of another’s guilt. The Christian applies Christian love. The offended party identifies with Christ himself and focuses on saving the other, not brooding over injury.
Have a good week, Fr. Bill Arnold
Pope Francis has requested a special collection. A second collection will be taken next weekend, September 12th and 13th, in response to His Holiness’s request. The collection will be earmarked for the 2020 Pontifical Good Friday Collection which was delayed due to the suspension of gatherings as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Please be as generous as possible.
Please note: In observance of Labor Day, parish staff for both St. Philip and Holy Spirit will not be in the office on Monday, September 7, 2020. Staff will return to the office on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

“Living the Joy of the Gospel” The St. Philip 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal totals have been updated and, as you can see, we have done very well. Over half of all parishioners have given to this year’s appeal for a grand total of $32,050.00. When paid pledges exceed our goal of $17,872.87, we stand to receive a refund of potentially $14,177.13. Considering all the effects of the pandemic, and the extraordinary Mass exemption we have experienced, this total for St. Philip is most gratifying. Thank you for your participation and support. If you have not done so yet, there is still time to send in your contribution or pledge. Thank you!

Attempts to repair always proved temporary – the problem actually began after an external power surge about 4-5 years ago. The entire system has been rewired – it should be permanently fixed. The total cost of all repairs is $16,926.00. I post this figure for the information of all parishioners of St. Philip. Thank you for your continued support.

Please Remember in Your Prayers Bob Udeck, age 75, a long-time member of Holy Spirit Parish, who died on Friday, August 28, 2020, at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Bob was active in our parish as a cantor and a member of the choir, as well as the Happy Spirits. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Bob on Friday, September 4th, at Holy Spirit Parish with many friends and parishioners present. Please keep his wife Diane and his family in your prayers. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Prayer Cenacle: A group of lay people who support the Marian Movement of Priests will be gathering Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at 7:00 p.m in Holy Spirit Day Chapel.
Baptism Class: The next Baptism Class is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish office. For a baptism to take place, a family must be registered as a member of Holy Spirit and scheduled to attend the class. Call 614-861-1521 to register for the class.
Additional Holy Spirit Information
Holy Spirit School welcomed back students starting this week and we were so happy to see everyone! We had a great Rolling Out Week and were able to see almost all of our students! All of our teachers and staff
have been working very hard over the past couple of weeks to make sure the building is safe, ready, and welcoming for all students. We have hand washing stations, hand sanitizers, desk shields, and disinfectant spray. There are signs posted to help students and staff remember to keep a safe distance and wear a mask. Sidewalks have been installed in the front of the school to help with the arrival and dismissal of students. All of these measures paid off; we had a successful safe week with students!
This week, will begin the blended learning model. Group A will come Mondays and Tuesdays and Group B will come Wednesdays and Thursdays. All students will learn virtually on Fridays. Some families have chosen an online only option for the first quarter. Each grade will meet in the morning for a quick meeting before starting their day. On Fridays, they will meet as a class to discuss the week and upcoming agenda.
Although this year is like no other, we will continue to teach our students and be leaders in faith for them. Thank you for your continuous support and prayers, we appreciate it!
Amy Chessler, Principal

Be sure to select Holy Spirit School as the organization you wish to support. You will need your Kroger Plus Card number to enroll. If you are already enrolled, you MUST re-enroll every year. You still receive your Kroger Fuel Points, too! If you shop at Giant Eagle, Giant Eagle’s Apples for the Students program helps us as well. Enrolling is easy! Visit Gianteagle.com/afts and enter your Giant Eagle Advantage Card number. Enter Holy Spirit’s School Code which is 5137.
Thank You From St. Vincent de Paul! The support from our parishioners for our food pantry requests has been heartwarming! Our food is well stocked, but we are in need of jumbo rolls of toilet paper. We have been trying to put one big roll in every bag we give out. If you are able, pick up an extra package of toilet paper at the store. You can drop it off at the parish office from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., or bring it to Mass if you’re attending in person.
Labor Day, September 7, 2020. Labor Day provides Catholics the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of this day: to honor the dignity and value of human labor, and of course, the workers who carry the American economy on their backs. Do you know what the Catholic Church teaches about the rights and duties of all workers?
• The rights of workers, like all other rights, are based on the nature of the human person and on the dignity of each worker. The economy of any country should serve the worker (the human person), not the other way around!
• The Church teaches that workers have the right to a just and living wage, the right to a pension and to insurance for old age, sickness, and in work-related accidents.
• The Church believes workers have the right to organize (form a union) and to enter collective bargaining for their wages and working conditions, the right to strike and withhold their labor when they deem it necessary.
• The Church believes current economic systems can, in many ways, cause enormous suffering to workers, assaulting a worker’s dignity and the value of our Common Home (this earth!) and sustain the invisible tyranny of money that only guarantees privileges of a few. (Pope Francis)
• As followers of Jesus, we should judge economic choices and institutions by how they protect or undermine the life and dignity of the human person, and serve the Common Good of all citizens and participants.
A worker owes the employer a good day’s work for a fair and living wage. All parents need to teach their children the value of work in shaping not only their future, but also theitr talents and contributions to the common good of our society.
Remember Ash Wednesday?
Dear Holy Spirit and St. Philip Families, We at JOIN thank you for the generous Ash Wednesday collection. Your compassion and kindness are blessings to those we serve in our mission, as well as to staff and volunteers. We are fortunate to be able to distribute the gifts you have entrusted to us and to be a part of this charitable family! May God bless you all, always, with grace and peace!
Sincerely, Lisa K.JOIN
Produce MarketOur next Produce Market is this Friday, September 11th, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed about 1:00 p.m. to help set up. Our process will be a little different due to social distancing rules. We will conduct it as a “drive through” so our clients will not need to leave their cars. We will pre-bag everything and load the bags into their trunks. Tables will be set up by the school. Food will be bagged as needed and placed on the tables, then collected in a larger bag for the clients. Please wear a mask. Gloves will be provided.
Parishioners of St. Philip and Holy Spirit! We have opened up both parishes – St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit Church – to those who wish to attend Mass. Attendance is voluntary. The Bishops of Ohio have extended the dispensation to attend Mass until further notice. Anyone at high risk or who shows any symptoms of illness should remain at home.

Next Sunday, September 13, 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip (call for a reservation: 614-237-1671)
Next Sunday, September 13, 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit (call for a reservation: 614-861-1521)

Confessions at Holy SpiritEvery Thursday evening, confessions are held at Holy Spirit Church from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Either Fr. Bill Arnold or Fr. Mike Nimocks will be hearing these confessions. Keep a few points in mind.
•Call to make an appointment. Give only your first name and a possible contact number.
•All confessions are in the Church. Only one person admitted to Church at a time.
•All confessions are anonymous and done at a six-foot distance. Your anonymity is always protected. Fr. Arnold/Nimocks have no need or desire to know your identity. Priest sits behind a screen.
•All entry to Church through the bell tower door or elevator door.
Many Thanks! Thank you to all who supported the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal, I extend a heartfelt expression of thanks and gratitude. Both parishes – St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit have exceeded their goals for this year’s campaign and will receive a refund, when all the pledges are paid in. These are different times – as you know – and our campaign this year was a bit out of the ordinary. May God bless your generosity to the 2020 BAA campaign.
Please remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound and/or recovering from St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes, especially Richard Berger, Ed Bracken, Robert & Lu Cudak, Christine Krites, Kim Marsh, Lisa Rundag, and Connie Williams, and for those in our parishes coping with physical and mental conditions.
Are you or is someone you know: Curious about the Catholic faith? Interested in becoming Catholic? Baptized Catholic as a child, but never received the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process through which adults join the Catholic Church. The first step in this process is a period of inquiry, which is an opportunity to learn more about our parish community, our Catholic faith, and our God. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our RCIA sessions will take place online using the Zoom teleconferencing system. Our first RCIA session will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29th. All are welcome to participate! This is also a great opportunity for lifelong Catholics to brush up on their faith. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact [email protected] for login information.
