24 THANKOFFERING Special WELCA envelopes have been placed in the pews for your Thankoffering. The ushers will also have envelopes available. Please make your checks payable to “Holy Trinity Church Women.” We will deposit them in our account and then mail a check to Chicago, our national headquarters. As we collect the Thankoffering today, we share in a tradition dating back to the 1800’s, when Christian women formed “mite” or “cent” societies to fund mission. When others in the church said there was not enough money to carry out these projects, the women believed otherwise. In these societies, each woman collected offerings at home. On occasion, they would gather as we do today to worship and combine their offerings and offer them up with thanks and praise. When Women of the ELCA was formed nearly 30 years ago, we committed to continue this tradi- tion of giving in gratitude for blessings. Each year, in thousands of congrega- tions, Thankofferings are collected and sent to support the life-changing ministries of Women of the ELCA. Together, we do more than we could ever do apart. In gratitude for all God has given to us, and with hope for all that is to come, we now collect our Thankoffering. Prayers of Intercession have been composed by the women of our congregation. Thanks to everyone who took the time to remember how God works in our lives. Everyone is invited for coffee hour after church. Thanks to the following for their help this morning: April Chamberlin, Callie Yanos, Megan Bell, Betsy Ahlersmeyer, Kimberly Ma- honey, Ricci Atchison, Ruby Kalk, Julie Kurz, Margo Poore, Lesley Reese, Marti Al- len, Kay Rogers, Pastor Bill Chamberlin Angela Rodgers and all who took part in the special music. Also, everyone who brought food for Coffee Hour or helped in any way. A special thank you goes to our wonderful Parish Administrator, Nancy Isenberg. Lois H. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

Please Stand

P Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation.

C Amen.

P Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God’s mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

C Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P Let us pray- Creator God, you call us into relationship with you and

with all of creation. In Jesus you gave us mercy beyond our understanding and showed us how to live with grace toward each other. Your blessings are like the dew in the morning and the stars in the heavens, not to be counted but to be received with thanksgiving and generously shared. Keep us moving always toward you and our neighbor, eager to share and receive. In the name of Christ we pray.

C Amen.

The congregation may be seated.

OFFERING PRAYER

P God of grace,

C You have showered us with abundance and entrusted to us the ministries of Women of the ELCA. Accept these offerings to fur-ther your mission. Help us to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, sup-port one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society and the world. Accept these gifts and this prayer that, nurtured by your Word, filled with your spirit and fed at your table, we may share with gladness all that you have shared with us until all crea-tion is satisfied. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

P We join hands and pray together the prayer our Savior taught us.

C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

BLESSING

P The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord's face shine on you with grace and mercy.

The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace .

CAmen.

FIRST READING: AMOS 5:6-7, 10-15 6Seek the LORD and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it.

7Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground!

10They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth. 11Therefore because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

12For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate.

13Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time.

14Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said.

15Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

P The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

PSALM 90:12-17

The psalm will be spoken responsively.

12So teach us to num- | ber our days that we may apply our | hearts to wisdom.

13Return, O LORD; how long | will you tarry? Be gracious | to your servants. 14Satisfy us by your steadfast love | in the morning; so shall we rejoice and be glad | all our days. 15Make us glad as many days as you af- | flicted us and as many years as we suf- | fered adversity.

16Show your ser- | vants your works, and your splendor | to their children.

17May the graciousness of the Lord our God | be upon us; prosper the work of our hands; pros- | per our handiwork.

THE PEACE

P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C And also with you.

The ministers and congregation may greet one another in the name of the Lord. As the congregation finishes sharing, please begin singing Let There Be

Peace On Earth

Let there be peace on Earth

And let it begin with me

Let there be peace on Earth,

The peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father

Brothers all are we.

Let me walk with my brother

In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me,

Let this be the moment now.

With every step I take,

Let this be my solemn vow:

To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally.

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Please be seated.

CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

L With the whole people of Christ Jesus, let us call upon God for the sake of the church, the world and all in need of prayer.

God who made all things good, you create us to be caretakers and stewards

of your creation. You equip us to provide for the people, places and minis-tries that you have entrusted to our care. Draw us together in the light of faith and hope so that we may recognize our calling to this work

A brief silence.

L Lord in your mercy,

C Hear our prayers.

L Into your hands, O God, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in your abundant mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

C Amen.

11

SECOND READING: HEBREWS 4:12-16

12Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from mar-

row; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. 14Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the

heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

The reading is concluded:

P The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: MARK 10:17-31

P The Holy Gospel according to Mark 10th chapter.

C Glory to you, O Lord. 17As [Jesus] was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not de-fraud; Honor your father and mother.’ ” 20He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” 21Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?” 27Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.” 28Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” 29Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or broth-ers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecu-tions—and in the age to come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” The gospel concludes:

P The gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to you, O Christ. The congregation may be seated.
