ONE FAMILY: IGNITING FAITH, NURTURING COMPASSION, PRODUCING DISCIPLES
BEAUTY IS TRUTH: In a letter to artists, St. John Paul II wrote: In order to commu-
nicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art. Art must
make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, of the
invisible, of God. It must therefore translate into meaningful terms that which is
in itself ineffable. Art has a unique capacity to take one or other facet of the mes-
sage and translate it into colors, shapes and sounds which nourish the intuition
of those who look or listen. It does so without emptying the message itself of its
transcendent value and its aura of mystery. This is my desire to use Beauty which is
at the core of art to communicate what is otherwise ineffable (so far above us we can-not perceive it). Just the simple decluttering of the upper levels in the church so it is clean and therefore not making a distraction to the windows, the altar or the move-ments of the Liturgy—is a service to Beauty and therefore to God. Bringing art glass into our church that tell the story of salvation is a service to beauty and so it enables our spirits to be raised up and edified. When something gets old and worn, it often calls attention to itself and no long reflects beauty or points to God. Then it needs to be re-newed, cleaned, restored.

OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP ICON:
Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a Byzantine icon that is believed to have its origin sometime during the 13th -15th cetury. The image is also known as “Our Lady of Perpetual Succour.” The icon is known for being miraculous; over the centuries count-less healings and special graces have been attributed to it, so much so that the image has been honored and venerated by many Popes. The miraculous icon is painted on wood and measures about 20" in height (54 x 41.5 centimeters) and depicts the Virgin Mary, under the title “Mother of God,” holding the Child Jesus.
The Archangels Michael and Gabriel, hovering in the upper corners, hold the instruments of the Passion. St. Michael (in the left corner) holds the spear, the wine-soaked sponge, and the crown of thorns. St. Gabriel (in the right corner) holds the cross and the nails.
The intent of the artist was to portray the Child Jesus con-templating the vision of His future Passion. Frightened by the vision, he runs to his mother for consolation. The anguish He feels is shown by the loss of one of His sandals as he quickly flees into the arms of his Mother.
Despite a foreboding vision of suffering, the icon also conveys the triumph of Christ over sin and death, symbolized by the golden background as a sign of the glory of the resurrection. The royal crowns on the heads of Jesus and Mary also sym-bolize their triumph as the King of Kings with his Queen Mother.
In a very beautiful way, the Child Jesus grasps the hand of the Blessed Mother. He seeks comfort from His mother as He sees the instruments of His passion. The position of Mary’s hands – both holding the Child Jesus (who seems like a small adult) and at the same time presenting Him to us – convey the reality of our Lord’s incarnation, that He is true God who became also true man. Just as the Child Jesus fled into the arms of his Mother when he was frightened, so too do we flee into the arms of our Blessed Mother with child-like confi-dence whenever fear envelopes our hearts. Just as the Virgin Mother consoled and comforted her Divine Child, so too does she console and comfort us, her spiritual children, in our af-flictions. We can always come to her in our time of need and receive her help.
In this iconography, Mary is represented as the one who guides us to the Redeemer. The Virgin Mother is also our Help who intercedes with her Son on our behalf. The star painted on Mary’s veil, centered on her forehead, highlights her role in the plan of salvation as both the Mother of God and our Mother.
To this day, the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome displays the original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. They (Redemptorists) are the guardians and promoters of the holy icon, the only religious order entrusted with the task of doing so with a venerated image of Our Lady.
Our copy of that image was recently refurbished and paid for by a generous parishioner.
EXODUS 90: For Men: A band of brothers recently finished a spiritual journey to freedom where by we met weekly, shared our progress with the disciplines, reviewed our week and the insights we got from the Book of Exodus (which guided us on our journey). We all found a new sense of freedom and the strength to recognize the areas of our lives that are way to de-pendent on things, entertainment, food and drink. It was like boot-camp for spiritual draftees. Some of us are ready to go on this journey again and take others with us...forming new groups. Talk to us and see what we are talking about: Roger Filips, Casey Christensen, Carly Christensen, Keith Loecker, Marcus Heithold, Larry Lammers, Kevin Uhing and John Kleinschmit. We are going to meet on Jan. 13 at 8pm. The new co-hort of Exodus 90 would begin on Jan. 21 and end on Holy Saturday. An article in Our Sunday Visitor called Exodus 90 brutal, demanding and life-changing. It’s pillars are Prayer, Fraternity and Ascetism. Check it out...go to www.exodus90.com

A Word from Your Deacon…
Greetings fellow prayer-warriers!
We are trying something new by including our Ministry of Praise newsletter in the bulletin as an insert. That way we only have to mail it to the out-of-towners and home-bound. This should save money and help to reach more people.
The Christmas season is a great time to re-connect to Mary, or to finally get to know her if you never had a great connec-tion. Remember that the thing Mary wants most is for you to become friends with her son. She will never lead you astray, but there are two ways we can miss the mark with Marian spirituality: We can ignore her and not develop a rela-tionship with her or we can go overboard to the point that we start to treat Mary as an equal with God, worthy of worship, and ignore her attempts to point us toward her son.
For converts who grew up Protestant, the first problem is common. Protestants are often told that Catholics worship Mary and that to do so is idolatry, but we do not and should not worship Mary. We honor her, and ask her to intercede for us with her son, the same as we would ask any other friend to pray for us, but she probably has Jesus’ ear more than any other friend we have. The subject is further confused by the word pray. The word pray comes from the old English word meaning to ask. You might hear the term in an old movie when a lawyer might “pray” that the judge allow a wit-ness, or in the term “pray tell.”
So don’t be afraid to pray (ask) Mary to intercede for you, just remember that we are not worshiping her because she is not God. She is the queen mother in the kingdom of God. This was foreshadowed in the time of David. When David died and his son Solomon became king, David’s widow Bathsheba became the queen mother. She was given a throne at Solomon’s right, and he would not refuse her requests. Right now Mary sits at the right hand of Jesus and intercedes for us like Bathsheba did with Solomon. Have a talk with her. Pray her rosary.
I have included the 4th page of my book “Pearls of the Universal Church” on the nature of God the Father on the back
side. Copies are available for sale on the back table if you want to read ahead.
a. are playing hide and seek. I hid myself, but none of the children is trying to find me." Rabbi Mendel turned to his disciples and said, "Can you imagine the anguish of God, Who concealed Himself within the physical world, but no one is trying to find Him!"
(http://www.jewishworldreview.com/twerski/twerski_spirituality2.php3#.Ur2c 0XmBCAE) b. Ultimately, we believe in God’s existence because we have encountered him in a
relationship! (CCC 45) An atheist with no God-relationship is almost impossible to convince of God’s existence unless God makes himself known to him first. Then he can build his knowledge of God, which will further help his relationship.
2. How can we describe God?
a. He is a perfect spirit, (John 4:24) an entity who has always existed. b. He told Moses he was YHWH, which translates as “I AM HE WHO IS” or “I AM
WHO AM” or “I AM WHO I AM” … expresses God as what he is – infinitely above everything we can understand or say… (CCC 206)
c. He is omnipresent (everywhere all the time). d. He sees all of us, all we do, and all we think. e. He can do anything that is not contrary to his own will. Nothing is difficult or im-
possible for him to do. f. God is just. God is holy. God is merciful. He is infinitely perfect. g. God is life and love. He loved us into existence. God is a family. Our families
should model God by being loving and creating children. h. Because God is pure love, he desires someone to love and to have a relationship
with before the universe (and we) existed. This explains our model of the Trinity (CCC 245-246):
The Father loves the Son The Son loves the Father That love is so powerful, it is its own person, the Holy Spirit! All persons of the Trinity are co-
equal, co-eternal, and co-divine. Our God is one God in three persons, the “consubstantial trinity.” (CCC 253)
i. We can conclude that God’s nature is - love given, love received, love returned -
for all eternity! What an awesome God we have! j. God is the fullness of both masculinity and femininity “God created man in his own
image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Gen 1:27), but Jesus called him “Father” so we do too, but he is far more than a human father.
How are our souls like God’s? Our soul is a spirit that will never die (CCC 366)
