Pastor’s Corner………. Last Week’s Pastor’s corner was about praying the psalms. In this article, I would like to speak about different types of prayer. “Prayer”, says St. John Damascene,” is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or requesting of good things from God “. It is a form of communication with God”. Just as we cannot hold a conversation with another person unless he can hear us. The very act of praying is an implicit recognition of the presence of God, which draws us closer to him. That is why the Church recommends that we pray frequently or that we make it an important part of our daily lives. There are two types of Prayer, mental prayer and Vocal Prayer. Men-tal Prayer is a form of prayer where one loves God through dialogue with him, meditating on his words and contemplating him. It is a time of silence focused on God and one’s relationship with him. Mental Prayer is divided into meditation (active mental Prayer) and contem-plation (Passive mental prayer). Vocal prayer is made by some approved forms of words, like the sign of the cross, liturgy of the hours, Angelus, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be or the Apostles Creed. Among the Vocal Prayers one finds the prayer of adoration or wor-ship. This is acknowledging God’s power, goodness and greatness and acknowledging our dependence on him. It implies the deepest rever-ence for God and our dependence on God for everything. It presup-poses faith in God and hope in his goodness. This is what we do when we are at the Mass. We offer prayers of blessing when we express praise and honor to God. We acknowledge that we are just creatures before our Creator. Praise is the prayer which recognizes that God is God. It lauds God for his own sake and gives him glory. When we are in God’s presence we are aware of our unworthiness and we acknowledge our sinfulness, and beg for God’s mercy and for-giveness. It is generally done at the beginning of the Mass when we express sorrow for our sins. Then we have the prayer of petition. It is asking God for the things we need, both spiritual and Physical. Even though we pray for different needs, we express our own willingness to accept God’s will, whether God answers our prayers or not. The "Our Father" is a good example of a prayer of petition. By saying "thy will be done", we are acknowl-edging that God’s plans are more important than ours. Intercessory prayer is kind of petitionary prayer where we are not con-cerned with our own needs, but with the needs of others. We intercede through our prayers for our fellow men asking God to shower his mer-cy on them. Prayer of thanksgiving is a prayer to thank the Lord for the good things he has done in our lives. There are so many things we need to
thank God for. We are grateful to God for all his blessings, big and small.

Ofrecemos oraciones de bendición cuan-do expresamos alabanza y honor a Dios. Fr. Mathew Kavipurayidam, TOR

A heartfelt thank you to all for the cards, meals, visits, and prayers after my surgery. I am progressing well and am currently in cardiac rehab. That is helping me a lot as are the continued prayers. I have been cleared to drive again and in another couple of weeks I should be released from my 10-pound lift, push, pull restriction. That will be another major mile-stone. This has all been made possible due to your thoughtfulness and prayers . Thank you very much, Jeanne O’Connor
