Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter, and clothing. We
go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this
all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount
of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the
other way around?

2019 Appeal—After 19 years with our previous logo, we needed an updated version for use on our website, social media, and print and electronic communications. Our new logo was inspired by the beauty of the stained glass of our churches. The four shapes create between them a cross, symbol of our faith. Yellow, blue and red are the colours of the archdiocesan coat of arms. Together they embrace the green (lower left)—colour of our province and of hope.

"When people say the Rosary together, it is far more formidable to the devil, than one said privately. Because in this public prayer, it is an army that is attacking him. He can often overcome the prayer of an individual, but if this prayer is joined to other Christians, the devil has much more trouble in getting the best of it." - St Louis de Montfort.

September 27th, 2019 Dear pastors, friends, and advocates for life in Christ; Six years ago, Archbishop Daniel Bohan established the Archdiocesan Commission for Reverence for Life. The Commission, which works in close cooperation with the Archdiocesan Social Justice Office, has as its mandate “the promotion of reverence for human life in all its stages within the Archdiocese of Regina.” The Reverence for Life Commission’s goal is to assist the parishes of the Archdiocese of Regina to better advocate for and promote the dignity of the human person, especially where that dignity is seriously threatened. October has been established as ‘Reverence for Life’ month, a month especially dedicated to the celebrations of the value and dignity of human life in the Archdiocese of Regina. This year, inspired by the upcoming Synod on the Amazon, we are moving to a paperless Reverence for Life month. The theme for this year’s Reverence for Life materials is ‘Resisting a Throwaway Culture: How a consistent life ethic can unite a fractured people.’ The materials will explore the breadth and interconnectedness of life issues. The political system and societal narratives seem to separate and pin life issues against one another. How do we as Catholics with a holistic understanding of life issues navigate in this world? The prayer materials will be emailed out through the Archdiocesan Tuesday File from Melissa Gurash at the Chancery office. All other materials will be posted daily (Monday to Friday) throughout the month of October. The materials have been prepared by Dr. Brett Salkeld, the diocesan theologian. They will be available on the Reverence for Life page on the Archdiocesan website: https://archregina.sk.ca/reverence-life, as well as posted on our Facebook page. This can be found by searching “Archdiocese of Regina” on Facebook. Please encourage your parishioners to follow us for these posts and to stay connected with all our media posts. In addition to the prayers and reading materials, Campion College is hosting their inaugural Jesuit Lecture. This year, Dr. Charles C. Camosy will be giving a lecture titled, “Resisting Throwaway Culture: How a consistent life ethic can unite a fractured people”. We are partnering with Campion College to promote the lecture, which will be held on Wednesday, October 16th, 2019 at 7:00 pm at the Campion College Auditorium. A poster advertising the lecture has been sent out already and there is the opportunity to host/participate in satellite audiences as well. Please see the Sept 22nd “Archdiocese of Regina Bulletin Announcements” and “2019 Jesuit Lecture Poster” at: https://archregina.sk.ca/archdiocese-of-regina-bulletin Heartfelt thanks to all the parishes in the Archdiocese for your help and participation in celebrating Reverence for Life Month this October. Together we are working to build and strengthen a culture of life. Grace and peace,

September 26, 2019
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we approach the upcoming federal election, we are again called to consider how best to build up the kingdom of
God and serve the common good through our role as citizens. In an election, we have the opportunity to make a
difference in our community through informed and conscientious voting, but also through honest, forthright, and
charitable conversations with friends and neighbours, as well as with the political candidates seeking our votes.
How we choose to vote is important, but so too is our conduct when dealing with difficult or controversial public
issues. One of the most important gifts the Church can give to our polarized world is modeling healthy engagement
between people who, sometimes profoundly, disagree. This does not, however, require marginalizing our faith
commitments. A pluralistic democracy like Canada should be a place where people of various commitments bring
those commitments into vigorous dialogue in the public square, not a place where certain voices and perspectives are
dismissed on the arbitrary grounds that they are ‘religious.’
A Catholic’s vote should be boldly and unapologetically informed by our faith, the faith of the Church. That said,
discerning which party or candidate to vote for can be difficult. Some issues – including a range of issues that involve
respect for and the dignity of human life from conception to natural death – carry greater weight than others. In any
election, and especially in one where no major party aligns closely with Catholic values and vision of the common
good, any vote will involve some level of compromise. We do well to consider many factors, including the positions
and integrity of local candidates on issues of life and death, the possibility of effective legislation, the pursuit of a just
society which attends to the needs of those on the margins, the future of the planet, and the relative weight of other
important issues.
In this regard I would draw your attention to Voting as Catholics, the 2019 Federal Election Guide of the Canadian
Conference of Catholic Bishops. If this pamphlet is not available at the back of your church, ask your Pastor’s
assistance to find a copy, or look for it on our website.
I would also recommend to you a series on “Voting Like a Catholic” prepared by our Archdiocesan theologian Dr.
Brett Salkeld, which is available on our Archdiocesan webpage and social media. Brett will also be speaking on this
topic at Christ the King parish on Tuesday Oct. 1 after the 7 pm evening Mass.
Lastly, while it is easy to be frustrated when no party platform adequately represents Catholic Social Teaching, I want
to encourage you to do more than simply vote for the least bad option. If Catholics want better options on a range of
issues in the next federal election, we need to begin that work now. Talk or write to your local candidates of all parties
about issues that matter to you as a Catholic. Raise public awareness. Find allies across party lines. Work within the
parties themselves to influence election platforms. There is much more to responsible citizenship than voting. The
world needs the Gospel and its values. It is a responsibility of the laity to bring the Gospel to bear on questions of
public policy. May the Spirit of God give you wisdom and strength as you do so.
Yours in the Risen Lord,
✠Donald Bolen
Archbishop of Regina

Voting as Catholics 2019 Federal Election Guide
Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops Permanent Council
VOTING AS CATHOLICS 2019 Federal Election Guide
Voting: A Right and Responsibility
Canadian Catholics are being called upon as citizens to exercise their right to vote. The Church encourages and reasserts its belief in “the political freedom and responsibility of citizens.”1 By exercising their right to vote, citizens fulfill their duty of choosing a government and at the same time send a clear signal to the candidates being presented by their political parties for election. The important time leading up to an election also provides Canadians with the opportunity to interact with fellow voters, one’s neighbours, and the candidates themselves (particularly during their visits to neighbourhoods), raising awareness about the values, views, and concerns shared by Catholics across the country.
Political candidates are citizens, too. In addition, they assume responsibility for the well-being of the public. Their commitment and dedication are a generous contribution to society’s common good. Indeed, the purpose of the political community is itself the common good, namely, “the sum of those conditions of […] social life whereby people, families and associations more adequately and readily may attain their own perfection.”2
Working to Build a Better Society
While Christian beliefs do not constitute a political platform, they can be seen as a prism through which to analyze and evaluate government policies, laws, and programs. The principles of respect for life from conception to natural death and of the dignity of the human person should influence how Christians assess a party’s position on key moral issues. Choosing life also means being always concerned for the
weakest among us – physically, economically, and socially. It likewise implies the protection of the most fundamental human rights, including the right to religious freedom and freedom of conscience.
A more just society is also built when we live in solidarity and dialogue with different social partners, including Indigenous Peoples, as well as by supporting families and ensuring adequate funding for education, healthcare, housing, and the prevention and treatment of addictions.
Working with fellow citizens to address social concerns is fundamentally built on a view of the person inherently belonging to a community. To ensure our communities are truly welcoming and humane, we must also combat all forms of poverty, which inevitably result in the segregation and isolation of individuals.
Canada in the World: Providing Leadership for Justice and Peace
Believing in justice and peace includes daring to take a stand against the arms trade and against human trafficking, which exploits young people and workers. It means entering into international treaties that respect the planet, our common home, as well as tirelessly working for the expansion of peace everywhere.
Voting Means Using Your Judgment
Exercising the right to vote means making informed and discerning judgments about the options available. There are times, however, when making a decision about who to vote for may prove very difficult. The Church reminds us that “in this context, it must be noted also that a well-formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program
or an individual law in which the fundamental content of faith and morals is replaced by the introduction of proposals differing from this content or opposing it.”3
It is a sign of a healthy democratic community when informed and responsible citizens engage in an ongoing dialogue on major social issues with their political leaders. This is precisely the kind of community we should strive to support and develop. No less is expected of us, since all are called to take an active part in morally shaping the societies we inhabit and, Christians in particular, to defend the rights of those who are most vulnerable.
