Dear friends of God, Last week in the bulletin, I encouraged all of us to spend the time that we have available to us to read the Acts of the Apostles. How is that going? Have we started? What do we hear in the writings about the early Church? Acts was written by St. Luke, the evangelist who also gave us the Gospel according to Luke. It is a two- part work. In Luke’s Gospel we hear Jesus say: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Other translations tell us to be compassionate just as our Father is compassionate. It is not surprising that many describe Luke as the Gospel of compassion. The monk and mystic Thomas Merton once described God as “Mercy within Mercy within Mercy.” Have we experienced God in the way of mercy or have we fallen into the trap of thinking of God as a disapproving Father looking to yell at us for our sins, struggles and failures? Easter reminds us of the extent that God will go to heal us and make us whole. God is full of compassion. The Psalms remind us that God’s love is never-ending and God is full of mercy. We are made in the image and likeness of God. The unfortunate truth is that we often reflect more of the judgmental idol of a god that we have created than the God of Jesus Christ. Imagine the world that we would live in where we would strive daily to be compassionate as our God is compassionate: compassionate to ourselves, compassionate to our neighbor, compassionate to our enemy and compassionate to the earth that is our common home. God desires that we live, move and have our being as compassionate women and men and children of our God of compassion.

We have unfortunately named the strategy for combatting the coronavirus “social distancing.” Lately, I have heard it described as more of a physical distancing. I find that to be a helpful distinction. As members of the human race and children of the one God, we are to be in relationship with one another, to care for each other and to be attentive the needs of those who are struggling most in our world. We cannot allow ourselves to think that fighting this virus needs to turn our world into a game of winner takes all. In fact, that is the mentality that has led us to this point of our

fragmented humanity and the harm to our common home. We often offer thoughts and prayers during tragedies. We forget that our thoughts need to be those of our God of mercy and that our prayers are meant to transform us into the people that God desires us to be for the Kingdom of God. The Dali Lama, the leader of the Tibetan people, recently said that prayers aren’t enough, that we need to fight the coronavirus with compassion. I would suggest that our prayers need to propel us into acts of compassion for our brothers, our sisters and all of creation. Recently, Pope Francis spoke of other epidemics like the globalization of indifference: “Hopefully it will find us…with the necessary antibodies of justice, charity and solidarity.” At some point life will transition to some kind of normal. I wonder what impact this time will have on us. Will we continue along the path of war, greed and short-term gain that seems to have become our way of life or will charity, justice and mercy be the light that shines along the path of our lives? It is my hope that it will challenge us to leave those parts of our lives that blocked us from compassion for each other and all of God’s creation.

The Gospel this weekend is from Luke’s Gospel (24:13-35). It is the story of the encounter of two disciples on their way to Emmaus. These disciples didn’t recognize Jesus even as he walked in their midst. They shared with Jesus all that had happened to their teacher. Jesus taught them using images from the Old Testament to show them what they could not yet understand. They only recognized him in the breaking of the bread. From the beginning of our Catholic Christian Tradition, both Word and Sacrament have been essential to our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. Right now, we are deprived of receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus. We do our best with the internet and television, but soon we will gather around the Table of the Lord together and recognize him in the breaking of the bread.

May our God of compassion continue to show himself to us as we continue this challenging trek in our lives.

Much love,

SPIRITUAL COMMUION During these difficult times when we cannot attend Mass and receive Christ’s Body and blood, an Act of Spiritual Communion may give us some consolation.

It might help us to read the scripture readings for the day and then to pray a prayer such as this one written by St. Alphonsus Liguori in the 18th century:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Together let us walk in the steps of Christ with compassion, faith, charity and justice.

Prayer for the Care of the Earth God our Father and Creator, we give you thanks for the

wonder of creation which inspires us, the fruit of the Earth which feeds us,

and the joy of life which gives us hope. Heal the places where your creation

has been marred, and restore all creatures to the splendor of your glory,

that all may delight once again in your goodness.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

RESOURCES FOR PRACTICING YOUR FAITH AT HOME

The Diocese of Saginaw has just added numerous resources on their website to help you practice your faith at home. Many of the resources were produced locally. Please join us as we continue to pray for people throughout the world, and especially for our local community and those experiencing

great suffering and loss. Go to Saginaw.org and click on Resources for Practicing at Home. Share the resources with family and friends without the internet.

APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE MONTH TIPS FOR PROTECTING CHILDREN

For the next few weeks, the Diocese of Saginaw will be offering tips for protecting children and outreach to victims/survivors.

3. No one has the right to have access to children. No one, no matter who they are, has an automatic right to be around children or young people who are in the care of the Church without proper screening and without following the rules.

4. Common sense is not all that common. Dioceses, schools, parishes and especially families, must educate themselves and others on how to protect children.

TALKING POINTS Throughout the Gospel, Christ calls upon his followers to care for the most vulnerable among us, especially children. Our faith also calls for us to uphold the value of human life and the dignity of the human person. The protection of children is the responsibility of the entire Church, including the faithful. The protection of children and youth from abuse and other harm is a life issue and we must all do our part to uphold this ideal.

A Prayer for Those Facing Unemployment Father God, we pray for people across the globe currently facing unemployment due to the impacts of coronavirus. Please be close to them in their misery. Losing a job can be hard for them and their families. Even the smallest costs can create stress.

We pray that they find the courage to reach out to friends, families and services that may help them in their dark moments. You are a God who never abandons his children and promised never to leave us.

We seek your divine help and guidance for people looking for suitable employment and for economic stability to be restored. Amen. St. Columban Mission Society

“Only things of the Spirit will ultimately satisfy our hunger and quench our thirst.” Glenmary Father John Rausch

May our eyes and hearts be open today and always to the spiritual,

and may we find our peace in Christ alone.

Pope Francis says that after the pandemic, we have options: “Will we bet on life, the resurrection of the people or on the god of money, re-turning to the tomb of hunger, slavery, wars, weapons manufacturing, children without schools?”

EDUCATION/FAITH FORMATION Family Talk Time Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families -Sara McGinnis Lee Have you ever met someone new and, right away, connected with that person? Why do we feel chemistry with certain people?

Reflecting on the Word: The two disciples poured out their fear and sadness to the stranger they met on the road. They did not recognize him until his breaking of the bread. In this Gospel, we learn that the Risen Christ is not always easily recognized. Sometimes we only recognize Jesus in hindsight. But whether we know him or not, Jesus draws near to all of us on the journey of life. He is there to remind us of the Truth, to reassure us in the dark times, to light our way. Lk 24: 13-35.

Living the Word: Why did the disciples say their hearts were burning? Discuss how the disciples might have felt before being joined by Jesus and then when they traveled with him. Imagine how they reacted when Jesus was revealed to them. Talk about what it means for your heart to be burning within you.
