MARCH 2016 News from The Vestry and Search CommiƩee Calendar for Holy Week Garden of EaƟn’ Published by All Saints Episcopal Church “…to spread the love of God to all by what we do and say” Wayne Road at Groometown Road, Greensboro, North Carolina www.allsaintsgreensboro.org HELLO ALL SAINTSI am hoping by now that all of you are aware of the book club that is forming to re- view a book that is recommended by Bishop Anne titled “The New Jim Crow.” This book was written by Michelle Alexander (no relation) who is “a highly acclaimed civ- il rights lawyer, advocate and legal scholar.” Her credentials are quite long in this ar- ea and she has appeared as a commentator on both CNN and MSNBC. She recently sat on a panel with our Mayor Nancy Vaughn and the Reverend Nelson Johnson dis- cussing racial profiling by law enforcement in Greensboro (review it on line at tri- adcitybeat.com). Her book uses the knowledge she has gained through her profession to discuss the use of the so called “war on drugs” to control and denigrate black males and thereby restrict their ability to vote, educate themselves or find suitable employment. It has received great reviews from Forbes, Newsweek and the San Francisco Chronicle to name a few. During the panel discussion she spoke of the facts concerning the abnormally high black population in our prisons related to drug arrests while the percent of the white population that uses drugs is just as high as in the black population. She also dis- cussed the high number of traffic stops for black drivers versus others in our area and around the USA. She was not aggressively confrontational but discussed the need for change in an intelligent and open manner. If you are not planning to attend a book discussion, please consider reading a copy for your own review of her position. It is extremely difficult to put yourself in others shoes but if we are ever to make a solid gain on discrimination I believe that this is exactly what we need to do. As an Episcopalian and a follower of Jesus this comes firmly under the “Love thy neighbor as thyself” commandment that we all vow to follow. Along these same lines I have to say that I am extremely proud that the Episcopal Church has held its ground on the treatment of the LGBT community concerning the marriage rights of gay/lesbian couples. While factions of the Anglican Communion has taken steps and been marginally successful in trying to reduce our say on this is- sue we have stood strong for what we believe is right and what we believe that Jesus commanded regarding the treatment of our brothers and sisters. As Bishop Curry said, “it may be part of our vocation to help the Communion and to help many others to grow in a direction where we can realize and live the love that God has for all of us.” May God bless us all and bring us closer to a better, more loving world. HELLO ALL SAINTS… I am hoping by now that all of you are aware of the book club that is forming to re-view a book that is recommended by Bishop Anne titled “The New Jim Crow.” This book was written by Michelle Alexander (no relation) who is “a highly acclaimed civ-il rights lawyer, advocate and legal scholar.” Her credentials are quite long in this ar-ea and she has appeared as a commentator on both CNN and MSNBC. She recently sat on a panel with our Mayor Nancy Vaughn and the Reverend Nelson Johnson dis-cussing racial profiling by law enforcement in Greensboro (review it on line at tri-adcitybeat.com).

She also dis-cussed the high number of traffic stops for black drivers versus others in our area and around the USA.

While factions of the Anglican Communion has taken steps and been marginally successful in trying to reduce our say on this is-sue we have stood strong for what we believe is right and what we believe that Jesus commanded regarding the treatment of our brothers and sisters. As Bishop Curry said, “it may be part of our vocation to help the Communion and to help many others to grow in a direction where we can realize and live the love that God has for all of us.”

Cans for Emiliano … How Anne Frost Got Involved

Anne was interviewed for an ar cle in her company’s February 25th newsle er Anne, why are you involved in the Cans for Emiliano effort? Reason: I have a very good friend at our local Episcopal Church who is a 3rd grade teacher at Oak Hill Elementary,

located near many furniture factories in High Point. There is a child there, Emiliano, a 1st grader, who faces many treatments for cancer. His family is facing a hard

me financially, so several friends decided to raise mon-ey for Emiliano! We are asking our friends to bring cans (Coke, beer, alu-minum cans of any type) in honor of Emiliano to the PBM Greensboro Kitchene e. From there the friends group will carry the cans and cash them in for Emiliano and his family. Hopefully, we can help bring some finan-cial relief. Anne, do you know Emiliano? No, I know my friend the teacher who saw the need. Do you have other encouraging words for the PBM Employees? Thank you so much for your kindness!!!!!! This fully rep-resents our “C” for Community.

Well…it turns out that we’re not waiting! The Garden of Eatin’ Steering Committee (Stephen McCollum, Cliff Paddock, Vernon Hurley, Maureen Ballsieper, Karen Tate, Alison Mercier, John Kortheuer, Faith and Charlie Hawes, and Sue Keith) has met twice this year, with each other and with Master Gardeners and Community Garden Experts. And… the wait is over!

Our community garden is in the process of being planned, mapped out, approved, and realized.

The Garden of Eatin’ is conceptualized as a Donation Garden where harvested produce will be donated directly into our im-mediate community and food pantries serving our neighbors and community. We’re starting small, but we have BIG dreams. Interested in know-ing how you can support the Garden of Eatin’? Contact Stephen McCollum to see how you can get involved (no Green Thumb required)!

The Scriptural Book of James Sundays, March 6, 13 and 20 from 9:00-10:00 am

The votes are in! We will spend me during Lent studying the scriptural book of James. This is one of my favorite books be-cause it focuses on how we treat other people. Mar n Luther thought it should be excluded from the Bible because he felt it taught “works righteousness” — basically that we earn our way into heaven based on the works we do rather than based on Jesus’ ac ons and God’s mercy. Come discover if you agree with Luther! Bring a Bible to help follow along.

There is a sign-up sheet and registra on forms in the gathering space. Any young ladies between 10 and 18 years of age are welcome to join us as well. Registra on ends March 20. The registra on fee is $10. We hope you will be able to join us, Daughters always have fun events! Carolyn Edge is our presenter for the Assembly. The day will conclude with the Holy Eucharist.
