known as green beans or

string beans.

• They are a member of the

legume family, just like

black beans and

chickpeas.

• Fresh snap beans

should be crisp and

“snap” in half.

However, they are

also grown in

THREE SISTERS

Corn, beans and squash are called the Three Sisters because when they are planted

together they each provide the other with something important, making all three

thrive. Native Americans always planted these crops together.

CornCorn, a whole-grain, provides a trellis for the beans

to grow up.

BeansBeans, a plant-based protein source, provides the

corn and squash with nutrients like nitrogen.

SquashSquash, a hearty vegetable, is a ground cover that

helps keep the soil moist and prevent weeds from

growing.
