Year 12 Formal
We had the pleasure of attending the Year 12 Formal at the Sawtell RSL on Wednesday 9th November. It was fantastic to see our Year 12 students together with family, friends and staff of Bellingen High enjoy an evening of dressing up – everyone looked great. A large number of awards were presented - a list of the awards and recipients is in this Newsletter. We wish Year 12 all the best with their HSC results.
A big thank you to Coffs Camera House for their great work on the photos. Those students who paid for a photo disc can pick them up from the Front Office.

Rotary Public Speaking Success
Congratulations to Jordan Neville in Year 10 on his success at the recent Rotary Public Speaking Competition. Jordan competed against two other students – Max Cleversly from Macksville High and Sarah Honess from Kempsey High.
All three students had to prepare and present a 5-minute speech on various topics. Sarah was selected to speak first and her topic was the “United Nations”, Jordan was next and his topic was “Refugees” then Max spoke last on his topic “Career Choices”.
The speeches were presented in front of three adjudicators; two from Bellingen Toast Masters and a teacher from Bishop Druitt College. All speakers were excellent and the adjudicators took a considerable time to come to their final decision.
The great news is that Jordan was declared the winner and is to go onto the next level, which is the semi-final being held at Walcha on Saturday 18th February 2017.
At this level Jordan will present his prepared topic and then all competitors will be given a topic for their impromptu speech for 2 minutes, with very limited time to prepare.

From the Relieving Principal Art Express Accolades
We found out last week that two of our outgoing Year 12 students, Janna Elliott and Madelin Perry had their works nominated for consideration for the ARTEXPRESS Exhibition. ARTEXPRESS is an annual series of exhibitions of exemplary artworks created by New South Wales Visual Arts students for the Higher School Certificate examination. Whilst the competition for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS will be huge, we are confident Janna and Madelin’s work will give all other entrants a run for their money! I have my fingers crossed that the works are chosen and if they are, they will be in the ARTEXPRESS Exhibition which travels the State. More information and a photo of their works can be found in Ms Newbound’s report in this Newsletter.
Teachers Receive ACE Awards
Congratulations to Mr Peter Wilson and Mr Rob Wickham who were nominated for and received the Australian College of Educations World Teacher's Day Awards this week. It is an honour to work with teachers of their calibre.
Year 10 Work Experience
Year 10 students will undertake their work experience immediately after the FUTURES Program but this year we will do something a little different; a range of Bellingen High teachers will be going out to work sites to support our Year 10 students. If all goes well, we hope to continue this practice next year.
Suggestions, Complaints and Ideas
At Bellingen High School, we are always on the lookout for any suggestions that may help our school improve and progress. If you have any ideas or there is something worrying you, please do not hesitate to let us know. A small idea could lead to something big! Conversely, a small nagging issue, if left, becomes large, unwieldy and stressful, so let us know if you think there is something amiss.
School Canteen
We are very fortunate to have been placed on a list for a Canteen refurbishment at a cost of over $100 000. To accommodate this, the Canteen has been moved into temporary quarters in a classroom and Karen, our Canteen Supervisor, is running it as efficiently as ever. We expect our new and sparkling Canteen will be up and running for next year. Thanks to all our staff and students for their patience.

There are still a few work experience forms to come in. Please let me know if I can help find a placement. Students without organised work experience are expected to come to school.
Students have been issued with:
Three copies of their work-placement forms (one for the employer, one for the parent and one for the student);
a Logbook to be completed daily; and
a Safety and Emergency Procedures Card
Year 10 teachers are looking forward to visiting students during their placement.
There are several school based traineeship opportunities closing soon. This would involve paid work one day a week as well as training and your HSC. Please contact Mrs Gorman if you are interested or see the Careers Noticeboard for more information.

Sport News U15s Netball
On Friday 11th November, a group of young Bellingen High students travelled to
Woolgoolga to play in the first few rounds of the U15’s Combined High Schools
(CHS) Netball Knockout. A team of 9 girls competed together, against other
schools in the region.
Bellingen High matched up against Orara High School in the first match of the
day. The Bellingen team was successful in getting the win in a close match.
The girls demonstrated some sharp shooting, positive teamwork and good
defence, resulting in the match being won by 7 goals.
In the second match of the day the Bellingen girls came up against a tough
opponent, Grafton High School. The opposition came out fast and managed to
get a strong lead. Grafton managed to keep the lead for the course of the
game. The loss means the team was knocked out of the competition.
The team played well and enjoyed themselves on the day. The girls should be
proud of how they competed and positively represented Bellingen High School.
A special mention goes to Maia Berry who supported the team by umpiring on
the day. Well done girls.

North Coast Champions
The 14 and 16 years girls Futsal teams both qualified for the final of the
North Coast CHS Knockout Competition as Mid North Coast Zone Champions.
This was played at Sportz Central in Coffs Harbour on Thursday 3rd
November.
The 16’s team, so far undefeated this year, had to play the Lower North
Coast winners Camden Haven in their first game. So it was a shock that
Camden Haven scored the first two goals against the run of play. However,
this was just what was needed to spark the girls into real action. By half time
they had overtaken Camden Haven with the score 4-2. By full time they had
taken complete control winning 7-3.
The next game was against the winners of Far North Coast and Richmond River
Zones, which was Wollumbin High School. This was a one-sided game with the
girls winning 8-1.
The girls kept their undefeated title and were crowned North Coast Champions.

The 14’s did not have it so easy. Their first game against Melville High School
from Lower North Coast was an unsettling game. It seemed the Bello girls had
at least 4 times the number of chances to score setting up many great
opportunities, but often failing to finish. At the other end of the court Melville
would shoot and a goal would result. The girls went down 7-6 in a game that
they were the better team. Their second game against Mullumbimby High
School displayed what they are capable of, winning 10-1 in a shortened game.

Young Cricketers show form
Bellingen High School girls 14 years and under cricket team played their first
game of the North Coast Knockout against Coffs Harbour High at Connell Park
on Tuesday 1st November. For many of the girls it was in fact their first
game ever.
Captain Willow Neal, lost the toss and Coffs decided to bat first. This suited
the girls so they could get used to the game before batting. The game was a
20/20 match and our opening bowlers of Danika Meenahan and Willow Berry did
a great job of tying up the opposition. It was not until the fourth over that
Coffs scored off the bat. In fact, all the bowlers performed amazingly well
making it difficult for the batters to score. This resulted in wickets falling at
regular intervals as Coffs tried to get some runs on the board. “Catches Wins
Matches” and the girls definitely made Coffs pay with 8 wickets being caught
out. Best of the bowlers was Brynne Couper who snagged 5 wickets for 17 off
4 overs. Coffs were all out in the 20th over with a score of 54.
Openers for Bellingen were two Year 7 girls, Danika Meenahan and Mikela
Bailey who played with confidence. They attacked the bowling from the first
over and set up the win. Mikela scored 22 runs including three 4’s while Danika
scored 15. The girls passed the Coffs score in the eighth over with the loss
of only 2 wickets.
Next game will be against either Grafton or South Grafton and could be
another home game.
