1Communication with others have transitioned from face-to-face to screen interfaces. This is included within the home for example instead of yelling “Dinner” we now text it or after school; Kids go to seperate homes to hang out in a virtual space rather than together physically.

Canada is a multicultural country, meaning many cultures are living in the same geographical area. Every-ones home is different in the sense

that there are very different styles of living, cooking, and people living

under similar roofs.

It’s the documentation decade and everyone seems to be in on it. Social media has become a religious part of the home. From posting holiday photos on facebook, videos of your pets on YouTube and bathroom selfies on Instagram; the online community is high populated.

TECHNOLOGICAL trends

13D printing is the future of making. It’s a process that allows designers to develop three dimensional objects virtually, then print them out physical-ly. It works by layering material, the possibilities to this process are end-less. It’s been predicted that within ten years everyone will have a 3D printer in their home.

The internet of things will offer connec-tivity to everyday objects furthering the

communication within the home. It is an embedded system that will work

seamlessly with all wireless technology. “Home automation is typically used to control lighting,

heating, ventilation, air conditioning, appliances, communication systems,

entertainment and home security devices to improve convenience,

comfort, energy efficiency, and security.”

New technology is developed con-stantly to promote healthy living within the home. Our homes are starting to take care of us, as we have always cared for them. An example of this is Mother by Sense, which detects and analyzes daily activities; helping keep our lives organized and making sure the whole family is happy and looked after.

1The small house movement is a “archi-tectural and social movement that advocates living simply in small homes.” The aesthetic of these micro homes is similar to average house just on a smaller scale. These homes are often built on wheels like RV’s; not all trailer parks will allow these tiny homes to enter due to manufacturing requirements. Communities have been popping up all over the world, Spur Texas, being the first official “tiny house friendly town”.

Staying at a vacation home often leads to a large sum of money

depending on the rent or shares. Focusing on a unique travel experi-

ence in the trusted communities, comes sites such as Airbnb estab-lished from the idea of sharing the

home for a global community.

With the growth of social networks like YouTube, and Pinterest the DIY craze has exploded. Hiring a professional seems pointless when one can simple research how to fix or make anything. Design within the home has changed, instead of buying new, reproposing old objects is all the rage. For exam-ple following instructions on pinterest and redoing your kitchen cupboards on your own.

Due to the quick awareness in sustain-able products and green energy; comes the development of Green homes. Alternating to long-term cost benefits of clean energy, allows users chose environmentally friendly energy from solar panels.

It has seemed as though growing food at home has become completely out

of the question until now. The future of fresh is back in 2015 with the growth Seedsheet. A digital organized gar-dening system, that helps you grow

fresh food without the hassle.

The future of urban living is in the heart of the city. Behind expensive houses laneways full of parked cars and garages await for a facelift. Build-ing fully detached homes in these strange areas is cheaper than buying most condos in the city. Although there are many bylaws currently pre-vent people from building their dream home.

POLITICALtrends

1Going against the home luxury, restrictions of the government, and towards the freedom of both commu-nity and art culture; is the exotic metropolis. Burning Man for example, is an event where a foreign community of people come together for an annual week event to express self-identity, arts, and most importantly freedom. This event creates a week long metropolis community of total strangers, ending in a week leaving no environmental foot-print.

Most home trends which greatly impacts our opportunity to design usually lies with home owners of the consumer culture; however, expand-ing further funded by the government, is a new market of the homelessness. Projects such as Housing First in Canada and many more approaches to changing homelessness around the world, plans to adjust the homeless community towards a positive impact to society.

Oil prices and mortgage rates often don’t have an effect on each other, but recently

because of decreasing oil prices the Canadian economy has been affected

substantially. The Canadian dollar is down and people are losing jobs. As a result

The Bank of Canada cut the interest rate. According to Financial Post, “The Bank of Canada cut its benchmark interest rate to 0.75% , from 1%, saying the oil slump will weigh on everything from inflation to busi-ness spending”. The banks then followed

suit and cut the prime lending rate.The average homeowner is affected by this

because now they have extra disposable income to spend. “Research shows an

estimated 30% to 40% of Canadian house-holds are taking advantage of low interest

rates to pay back their mortgages”

A home is divided into different rooms, each room is defined by the space and objects within it. For example; a living room has a couch, a table, and most importantly a television. Which is the center of that space, we know this because everything in that room is directed towards it.

Our opportunity is; what happens to that space when technology changes. Looking back at the living room would you need a couch if you're running around with tech on your face? Would the shape of the room change?

Technology within the home is ever changing and advancing, in this digital age people find a comforting nook in the online world. This is a place where they can express themselves and escape from the real world. There is a collection of accessible spaces and homes within the cloud of technology.

Our opportunity is to design within the virtual space. As inventors, how can we further understand peoples relationship with technolo-gy and each other through face-to-screen communication.

Everyone wants their dream home, why can’t this be a possibility? Combining three dimensional printing technology and do it yourself methodologies people could build, or print, their perfect home.

Inspired by the internet of things house’s could be self aware, know-ing their systems and appearance. Homes could continue to build upon themselves, encouraging their owner to improve.

As the family grows so does the house; adding new rooms is simple. If fixes are needed the home knows and can help the owner build new solutions.
