OCTOBERBIRTHDAYS

THE POWER OF PRAYER: MEETING NEEDSFor the first time ever, Grand View set up a prayer tent at Dragon Boat Races, Sept. 9-10. Becky Specht, a Grand View Prayer Shepherds Ministry member, staffed the tent from 10am–2:30 pm both days. Elana Shinkle also joined for prayers Sunday afternoon.

Becky prayed with six people individually. Several other people wrote down their prayer requests, which were then taken to the Prayer Shepherds meeting and prayed for by the whole group. Many other people stopped by to say "thank you" for doing this.

Prayer Shepherds leader Terri Nichols said, "We wanted to increase people's awareness of the presence of God in their lives. And one of the most important things we can do for each other is to pray for and with one another."

"It is such a humbling and sacred experience to be able to pray for someone else," Becky said. "Having the tent there sparked conversation, so it was even a blessing to just be there as people walked by, hearing them comment to their friends and family about the prayer tent and prayers," Becky said.

"It helps to remind people that God is with them wherever they are, and that He should be included in whatever they do."

Look for the prayer tent at our next activity! "For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." Matt. 18:20

Prayer Shepherds Pray For Church Family

The Prayers Shepherds, led by Terri Nichols, including Katie Grimme, Dee Cliff, Sarah DuPont, Cynthia Sanders and Becky Specht just completed the awesome project of praying for each member of the Grand View church family listed on the latest attendance record, which included over 400 people! As the group meets every week for an hour, the task took several weeks to complete.

"We prayed for everyone on the roster, specifically, and for their individual needs as we knew of them," said Terri. "It was such a blessing and a privilige to lift up our brothers and sisters in prayer, and it helped me to be more connected to and invested in every person in our church family," added Becky.

The prayer ministry team will continue to lift up the needs of our church, pastor and staff as they focus on praying God's blessings and protection on families and breaking down strongholds.

Prayer Shepherds meets every Wednesday from 10:30-11:30am in the Susanna Wesley room. Contact Terri Nichols at 563-582-8875 for more information. Prayer requests can be left in the purple box on the Connection Counter.

DUBUQUE DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

My favorite part of Dragon boat festival and the reason I am back in the boat every year, is the level of support that comes from people within the boat as well as over on the shore. In the boat we all want to be the best we can be, but at the end of the day we all just want to have a good time. Everyone in both the youth and adult boat is so supportive of one another and cheers everyone else on.

The support and cheering coming from the shore is amazing as it motivates us to make our church family proud. As soon as you get off the boat you have your church family there smiling and so proud of what you have just done.

Dragon boat means so much to me because as a church we are out in the community showing God's love and having some fun and fellowship while doing so. – LAUREN BERGQUIST

On Sept. 9-10, Grand View enjoyed another year of Dragon Boating and selling items in the food tent. The Dragon Slayers (youth team) and Grand View GodStrong (adult team) had a wonderful time showing camaraderie and support throughout the weekend. Thanks to everyone who helped volunteer to make this such a successful event! And to make it even better, nearly $2,900 was raised from the food booth and sent to Texas for hurricane Harvey relief. Well done servants of God!

"

"

I enjoy the dragon boating because we are all equal. We are one unit functioning like a well oiled machine. If one of us gets off the beat, no one gets mad. We support each other and we have a good time doing it. – LOIE POLL"

"

My favorite part of dragon boating is hearing the Grand View support on the shore. I paddle for Grand View because we always have so much fun and create great memories. Teamwork shows and we enjoy the competition. I would encourage others to paddle because it challenges your mind and body. We may only paddle around 2 minutes each heat, but it is redeeming to see the hard work pay off when you see the flag fly! – BETH MEYER

I love the challenge of dragon boating, but getting to know new Grand View members is great! I paddled with the Grand View team in high school. It was a highlight back then and one of the reasons I came to Grand View after moving back to Dubuque. It's easy to learn and a lot of fun! – KARI LAMMER

My favorite part about dragon boating is getting a chance to talk and build relationships with people you normally would not get the opportunity to get to know. I also like the friendly competitive atmosphere that surrounds the whole weekend. The things that I remember most from year to year are not how well we did on each race; it's the encouragement that was shown by other teams and the smiles on everyone's faces no matter if we won or lost.

I paddle for the Grand View team because I like how we are all one big family with the mission of being present. I see the other teams doing their cheers and celebrating in their unique ways and then I see our teams and how they celebrate both their victories and losses by glorifying God for the whole park to hear.

Now I look forward to dragon boating all year, it is my favorite weekend and I would love for you to be apart of it! – EMILY SCHLETER

I look forward to the Dragon Boat Festival every summer. We have a great group of people who come down every year to paddle, to help with the brat booth, or just to cheer us on. It’s the fellowship with others that puts me back in the boat every year. It’s a truly unique experience that needs to be tried to understand. – WAYLEN HACKBARTH

Being a Minnesota girl, I love anything by or on the water. Dragon Boat weekend has the best of both. I've been Dragon boating for, I think, 7 years and I can't wait for year 8. It's something that Emily and I have

been doing together since we started.

You don't need to be athletic to Dragon Boat, plus paddling with Grand View gives you the opportunity to get to know the youth and other members. I know of several friendships that have been formed over Dragon Boat weekend. I would love to get to know some new people next year! Save the weekend. It is always the weekend after Labor day.– JEAN SCHLETER

PASTOR TOM – OCTOBER EDITION"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Phillipians 2:3-4

Early Christians in the very first Churches were expected to be “Difference Makers.” That is, as part of their faith development and as part of living as a Body of Christians, or congregation, they were expected to love, serve, and help one another and others in the world. This expectation from God continues to this day: all who follow Jesus are expected to love, serve, help, and do whatever possible to make a positive, Christ-like difference in the world around them.

Think for a moment of the people in your life who make a positive difference in your day or week. What is it that they do? Have you taken time to recognize them, thank them and to be inspired by what they are doing or saying? This might be somebody in your work place or in your neighborhood. Or in your family. Or maybe someone in your Church!

We are starting a new thing here at Grand View UMC– something that I hope becomes a common practice and something that we just do regularly and consistently: recognizing, thanking, and being inspired by people who are making a positive difference in people’s lives!

Myself and the Administrative Board leaders realized that recognizing people who give generously of their time, talents, and good spirit is good in and of itself! As well, we think recognizing “Difference Makers” will help produce more “difference makers!” Which, of course, is part of what we are called to do, to help transform the world in the name of Jesus!

Some people make a difference quietly and "behind the scenes" like serving in the nursery or in Children’s Church while worship or CREW meetings happen, or the many people who mow the grass, or the people who change furnace filters, or the people who sort the name tags every week.

Some people serve more “out front,” like the youth group leaders, or the Sunday School teachers, or the singers in the praise bands, or the people who run the A/V booth and camera on Sunday mornings.

You get the general idea. The point is, simply, there are many, many people who are a part of Grand View and they lovingly give their time, and their energy, and themselves to serving God and serving us!

And so, we need to recognize them, thank them, and be inspired by them. And, whenever possible: JOIN THEM in serving and making a positive Christ-like difference in the world!

Every week, you can name people who are making a difference by doing one of the following: • Email me: [email protected] • Email Janell: [email protected] • Tear off bulletin tab: Write the person’s name • A form and a box on the Connection Counter • Mail it to me: Written out Somehow, please, find a way to name “Difference Makers.”

Let me give you a more concrete example:

"Sue Miller is a Difference Maker! She has taught Sunday School at Grand View for many years and still is. As well, she helps make sure we are always set-up for Communion, including helping ask people to serve it. Sue is part of the Worship Decorating Team, including always making sure we have candles for Christmas Eve. And through the years, she has helped Grand View participate fully in the Dragon Boat races. In all of these things, Sue has constantly been making a positive and Christ-like difference in the lives of hundreds of Children and their parents. She helps Worship Celebrations be more colorful, meaningful, and memorable. We recognize her as a Difference Maker, thank her deeply, and are inspired to serve faithfully and consistently as she does.”

I am excited to begin seeing all of these “Difference Makers” named! And I am hopeful that as we do this, we will all take time to reflect upon what we do and why we do it, even asking ourselves, “I wonder if anyone would ever name me as a Difference Maker? Am I?”

God’s blessings to you - Pastor Tom

Greetings, Grand Viewers! Your generous giving to God through Grand View is always amazing.

As you continue to pray and consider the Generosity Challenge, here is some information and hopefully inspiration to go with the challenge.

As of Sept. 17, 2017, Generous Giving to God through Grand View is $375,221. Wow and Thank You!

As we examine this more closely, your continued prayers and consideration are requested.

• $375,222 represents 62.5% of our full year plan. • We have celebrated 75.5% of the Sundays in 2017 as of Sept. 17.

We are about to cross a milestone. Below is a brief update on our loan balance. Our facility and the ground on which it sits truly is a blessing. Grand View has a long history of being good stewards of the resources that God has brought to us.

The graph shows how we have reduced the loan over our history at this location and we are about to cross under $750,000! For more than 10 years, we have faithfully reduced the principal.

Thank you Grand View!

STEWARDSHIP OF GOD'S MONEY

Please continue to pray and be receptive to what God places on your hearts. If you feel called to make an extra gift to be applied to the loan principal, please make a notation of the gift such as: “GV Loan Principal.” Some methods through which to make an extra gift with this notation:

• Automatic deduction (forms are available in the Offi ce) • Giving through our Web page

• iPad giving every Sunday • Check or giving envelope placed in the off ering

Should you feel called to increase your giving to God through Grand View, gifts received without notation will be applied as directed by our cash management policy. This will help with regular loan payments and allow Grand View to move farther on our service path. Thank you for your consideration and continued generosity.

In humble service, Grand View Administrative Board

DIFFERENCE MAKERS:THE PRODUCE PEOPLE

The men and women who volunteer weekly to video record our worship celebrations are diff erence makers. Becky Specht, Shawn Poggemiller, Mark Dill, and Paul Benham have been serving during worship by recording sermons for over 3 years. These recordings are made available online and give those who missed a Sunday, are homebound, or don’t live close the opportunity to stay part of the worshipping community and hear Pastor Tom’s sermon. Becky, Shawn, Mark, and Paul faithfully serve each month to help this ministry happen. Becky commented, saying, “I appreciate serving with them so much. They give their time and talents every Sunday! They always show up and do their job and are willing to cover for the others when they are not able to make it on a given Sunday. It is joy to serve with these Godly men!”

Being a parent of 4 active and involved kids is busy enough. They both also hold jobs that demand their time, however, they are diff erence makers in the church. I have seen them help to plan, organize and run VBS, teach Sunday School, help run the brat booth, be involved in the men's group and recently have taken on the added responsibilities of helping to run the elementary youth group. They have become Diff erence Makers with the young children in our church, which helps to lead to a growing and vibrant church.

Erin and Jeremiah are diff erence makers in our Grand View UMC family. Erin and Jeremiah Haven have given hours to a variety of diff erent ministries at Grand View, but most recently they have given hands-on time and attention to Grand View’s computer and server technology. Both Erin and Jeremiah have a vast knowledge of technology and off ered this knowledge and experience to help the church staff and offi ce. Though technology can be time consuming and frustrating at times, Erin and Jeremiah persisted and helped update our computers in the offi ce on a couple of occasions. Erin and Jeremiah are a joy to be around, obviously knowledgeable, and amidst other commitments said, “Yes” to making a diff erence on something that’s easy to forget or ignore. The Grand View staff especially thanks Jeremiah and Erin for their time and talents with this project.
