HOME FILM/HOME STUDIO Filmmaking Joel Newman TERM 1 - Weds, PM SESSION – 1300-1600 (BST) TERM 2 - Weds, AM SESSION – 0900 -1200 (BST) You and your surroundings are the theme of this video production. You are the performer we will hear. We will explore a range of work (with and without narrative structure) that remains potent and innovative despite restrictions placed upon their production. We will draw from live action and animated examples and explore how physical constraint need not thwart experimentation and story-telling. On this course you will develop a script, storyboard and production schedule in order to produce a short, original video. Core learning: Topics of exploration will include cinematic language and film grammar, progression of technique, mise-en- scene, camera movement in production, the editing environment, fundamentals of animation and the use of sound. Technical Requirements: Hardware: Laptop, video camera/smart phone/ tripod/stabiliser Software: Abobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Apple Final Cut Pro, Motion, Logic, Garageband. Joel Newman is Head of Audiovisual at the AA and studied Fine Art at Reading University. He has shown video work in the UK and abroad.

WEEKLY SESSIONS Session 1: Wednesday 7th October/13th January Concepts and structures presentation. We will watch examples of work utilising a broad range of techniques including animation. Cameras, shot types and the non-linear environment. Session 2: Wednesday 14th October/20th January We have to consider narrative structure in filmmaking and those works without one. We will consider mise-en-scene, artifice and lighting. Session 3: Wednesday 21st October/27th January Concept finalisation- informal, group presentations of project concepts. Films that have big spaces and few words. Films that have many words and small spaces. Session 4: Wednesday 28th October/3rd February Editing and the language of film grammar. Motion graphics. Tutorials OPEN WEEK Session 5: Wednesday 11th November/17 th February Travelling and Filming. Sounds and recording. Session 6: Wednesday 18th November/24th February Filming and travelling, rough cuts and voice-overs Tutorials Session 7: Wednesday 25th November/3rd March Editing and tutorials Session 8: Wednesday 2nd December/10th March - // AA MEDIA JURY DAY Final presentation Viewing end products. Submission requirements: Students are asked to plan (storyboard), produce (shoot) and edit a short video piece with accompanying soundtrack (3-5 mins in length). Titles (motion graphics) are a prerequisite. Work should have an aspect ratio of 16:9 and preferably 1080 HD. Work may be live action or animation (or both). All audio elements should be original.
