MESSAGE FROM WHL COMMISSIONER RON ROBISONFrom humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, man-agers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broad-casters and media from throughout the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve.

We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

The Chiefs face the Tri-City Americans tonight for the final game of the regular season and 12th head-to-head matchup between the two rivals. Spokane came away with wins in 7 of the first 11 contests; most recently a 6-1 win in Spokane on March 11. Six different Chiefs scored in that game while Tyson Verhelst turned aside 30 of 31 shots faced. Rookie Jaret Anderson-Dolan had a career night with a goal and 3 assists. Last night, the Chiefs punched their ticket to the postseason for the 10th consecutive season with a 5-4 overtime win over the Portland Winterhawks. Hudson Elynuik scored the overtime winner for the second-straight game while Kailer Yamamoto racked up 3 assists for 2nd Star honors. The 3-point game eliminated the Americans from the playoff picture for the first time in over a decade. Tonight’s game does have important standings implications, however, as the Chiefs are hoping to maintain their current position in 3rd Place in the division with only a 1-point lead on Portland. The Winterhawks have 2 games remaining. Kailer Yamamoto leads all Chiefs against the Ams this season with 3 goals and 12 assists in 9 games. Dominic Zwerger has 8 goals against Tri-City while team captain Jason Fram has 3 goals and 11 assists. Four different goaltenders have suited up for the Chiefs against their rivals, with Tyson Verhelst earning the most time, posting a 3.31 GAA and .885 SV% in 10 appearances. Tri-City’s Parker Bowles, who ranks 6th in the WHL with 94 points (38g, 56a), leads all players in the season series with 12 goals and 5 assists. Fellow American Jordan Topping has 6 goals and 9 assists. Evan Sarthou has the lion’s share of time in goal for Tri-City against the Chiefs, earning a 4-4-1-0 record in 10 appearances (4.22 GAA, .868 SV%). The Chiefs are 4-5-0-1 in their last 10 as they attempt to finish strong while battling the injury bug. Top scorer Kailer Yamamoto missed over a month of action before returning to the lineup on March 9. Overage forward Wyatt Johnson and captain D Jason Fram both missed significant time (Fram played for the first time in over a month on Wednesday), along with D Evan Fiala, D Jeff Faith and G Tyson Verhelst. F Jacob Cardiff and F Ethan McIndoe returned Tuesday after missing 4+ games. The Chiefs were at least one skater short of a full lineup for 5-straight games before Tuesday’s contest at Seattle.

PLAYOFF PUSH… With a win in Portland last night, the Chiefs clinched a playoff berth for the tenth consecutive season. If the playoffs started today, the Chiefs would face the Everett Silvertips in the first round. They are currently in 3rd Place in the U.S. Division, 1 point ahead of the Portland Winterhawks. Tri-City and Vancouver are the two Western Conference teams on the outside looking in. MONKEY OFF THE BACK… D Matt Sozanski scored his first career goal on Tuesday, in his 141st career game. He now has a 3-game goal streak as he backed that up with his second goal in as many nights on Wednesday on his way to first star honors and third last night in Portland. FILLING IN… The Chiefs have been stretched thin by injuries lately with seven players listed on this week’s injury report. Leading scorer F Kailer Yamamoto missed 15 games before returning a week ago, F Wyatt Johnson has missed the last 25, & team captain D Jason Fram returned Wednesday after missing 15. Alternate captain D Evan Fiala has been out of the lineup the last 8 games and D Jeff Faith the last 4. Before returning to the lineup on Tuesday, F Jacob Cardiff missed 6 games and F Ethan McIndoe missed 4. YOUTH MOVEMENT… The Chiefs have 7 players born in 1998 (4) or 1999 (3) who have played significant minutes this season. Those 7 players have a combined 382 games played (54.6 average). Anderson-Dolan (14-12-26) and Ethan McIndoe (8-7-15) lead the team’s 16 and 17-year-olds in scoring. POWER SHORTAGE… Since Yamamoto’s injury, the Chiefs are 7-of-73 on the PP (9.6%), and since Fram’s injury they are 4-for-59 (6.7%). The Chiefs are 23-7-1-3 this season when scoring at least one PPG, but 10-22-4-1 otherwise. SHOOTOUT STRUGGLES… The Chiefs have held their own in overtime (7-5) but are 0-4 in shootouts this season. Spokane shooters have scored on just 1 of 10 chances while goalies have allowed 7 scores on 9 attempts. HUDSON HORNET… C Hudson Elynuik snapped a 10-game point streak on Feb. 21 but responded with 3 goals in his next 2 games. Elynuik ranked 122nd among North American skaters in the latest NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings. Elynuik had 6 points (4g, 2a) in 7 games before sustaining a lower body injury that kept him out of the lineup from Oct. 10-Nov. 25 but has 37 points since (15g, 22a). He has notched career highs in every offensive statistical category. BENCH BOSS… Head Coach Don Nachbaur is in his 6th season with the Chiefs and recently eclipsed current Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach Mike Babcock for first place in Chiefs’ franchise history in coaching wins with 224 (he now has 234). In his first five seasons in Spokane, he posted a 201-127-17-10 record. He is also the career wins leader for the Tri-City Americans with 235. Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (665). RECOGNIZING RAY… On Jan. 29, the Chiefs retired former player & long-time NHL standout Ray Whitney’s number 14. It was the first number ever retired by the franchise. He played for the Chiefs from 1988-91 & was a part of the 1991 Memorial Cup Championship team. Among all Chiefs, he is 1st in career points (348), 1st in career assists (207), 4th in career goals (141) and 5th in points per game (1.63). In 1990-91, he posted a franchise record 185 points w/ 67 goals (2nd in franchise history) & 118 assists (1st). He was the WHL’s top scorer & earned the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as POY. A 2nd-round pick in the ’91 NHL Draft, he played over 1,300 games (1,330) & scored 1,064 points (385 goals). He was a 3-time NHL All-Star (’00, ’03, ’12) & won the Stanley Cup in 2006 with Carolina. Other notable Chiefs to have worn #14 include: Buddy Bodman (WIHL, 1963-71), Ryan Duthie (91-94), Trent Whitfield (94-98), Tim Smith (98-01), Jeff Lynch (01-06), Mitch Wahl (05-10), Adam Helewka (12-15). KEANU DIG IT?... Forward Keanu Yamamoto surpassed his career-high 29 points (12g, 17a) scored last season (in 30 fewer games) & recorded his 100th career point on Feb. 14. Combined, the Yamamoto brothers tallied 23 points (11g, 12a) in December and 25 (6g, 19a) in January before the younger Kailer missed much of February with an injury. NEW PLACES, NEW FACES… On Jan. 1, the Chiefs traded 2014-15 team-leading scorer Adam Helewka to the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for overage F Wyatt Johnson, F Eli Zummack (2000-born), Red Deer’s 2nd Round pick in 2016 & their 5th Round pick in 2017. Both Helewka and Johnson had both played their entire WHL career for one team before the trade. F Wyatt Johnson, who was the Rebels’ captain, scored 9 goals and 17 assists in 38 games with the Rebels to start the season. In 235 career games, he has 62 goals and 76 assists, highlighted by a 25-goal, 54-point campaign in 2014-15. F Presten Kopeck was acquired from the Kootenay Ice in a trade for F Riley Whittingham and a 4th Rd Bantam Pick on Jan. 4. Kopeck actually never suited up for the Ice after being traded there from Red Deer on Jan 3. CLAVET CLIMBER… Evan Fiala, an 18-year-old from Clavet, SK, scored his 1st career goal on Oct. 10 vs. Everett, in his 77th career game, and has 5 more since then. The hard-hitting d-man leads the Chiefs with 101 PIM is 2nd with a +18 rating.
