Home Happenings - July 2015

From the Desk of the CEO, Joy Husak Fairhaven has been very active with numerous events and activities in collaboration with the

Foundation and other community stakeholders. Residents are enjoying the wonderful weather by

taking a walk with family and friends or sitting in our gardens and at the front entrance. I commend

the staff who have kept our gardens attractive and yard clean. It does take a lot of work to keep up

this wonderful space and we couldn’t do it without you or the numerous volunteers who assist us. I

hope that everyone takes a little time for themselves and enjoys their family over the summer months,

as it does seem to fly by when you’re having fun!

We have been busy replacing the floor on Westview 2 home area and thank you to everyone for

being patient as we finish this project. We continue to work on the care centres’ counter tops and

dining room serveries. As everyone knows spring and summer are the time to repair and fix up your

home therefore we too follow this belief.

As you read this wonderful newsletter, check out the photos from our events and other news articles.

Thank you to all who contribute with your ideas, recipes, updates and fun commentaries. Thank you

to Jamie-Lee Pearson who continues to create and edit Home Happenings on a monthly basis. Enjoy

your summer and take time to smell the roses.

Staff Appreciation and Service Awards

Congratulations to all of our recipients who received their Staff Appreciation Awards on June 24th.

This was very well attended and the casino theme and ice cream bar were a big hit! Have a look at

the list of recipients below. Thank you to Lana, her team and assistance from the management team,

for organizing a great event. We also appreciated the Committee of Management members who

came out to help us this year – Keith Riel, Ken Jackman and Dave Haacke.

We have numerous staff who have been here for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30

and 35 years – which states we have been caring for generations.

Without your dedication and commitment Fairhaven would not be

recognized in the community as a reputable home. It is your smile and

laughter that brightens our residents’ days. Cheerful attitudes are

“contagious” and have a positive effect in the work environment.

Thank you to everyone who continues to make Fairhaven a wonderful

place to live and work.

Are You Sick? Don’t Come to Work!

Although we do this out of dedication to our jobs, or from guilt for leaving your co-workers potentially short-staffed, coming to work when you are sick is not in the best interests of the home or our residents. Remember our Mission Statement: …in a caring and safe environment. Coming to work ill does not promote a healthy, safe environment for our residents and coworkers. Many illnesses like influenza or norovirus are spread by droplet or contact routes. This means that tiny pieces of germs are either expelled from the body by means of sneezing or coughing, or from an ill person’s hands. The germs are then spread throughout the home by travelling on surfaces. So how do you know if you should come to work or stay home? Ask a few self-screening questions:

Do I have a new or worsening cough?

Do I have a fever >38⁰C

Have I had more than 2 episodes of loose bowels or vomiting in the last 24 hours (nausea alone is not necessarily indicative of illness)

Has a nurse or doctor told me my symptoms are contagious?

*If you answer YES to any of the above, do not come to work* You may also call scheduling or Lori Rowsell directly to discuss your symptoms and recommended length of time to remain away from work. You can reach Lori by email at [email protected] or by telephone at 705-743-0881 extension 284. In summary, how can you help to prevent the spread of infection?

Don’t come to work when you have a communicable illness

Cough and sneeze into your sleeve

Clean Your Hands!

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

If you have concerns about calling in sick and the Attendance Support Program, please speak with your manager directly.

From the Suggestion Box

Question: Can there be a pool table in the Greatroom?

Response: Thank you for your suggestion. Brand Health donated a pool table

for the Greatroom in 2013.

Due to size and space constraints during entertainment and special events the

pool table was put in storage until we go forward with building an auditorium.

Vintage Voices

Vintage Voices ended their season with a bang. Yes, another singing year has come to a close and

what a closure. Our summer performance featured many of our members, both residents and

volunteers, together with guests Morris and Donny. We had single artists, duets and trios and then

there was the Hill Billy gang led by Donny playing his guitar. Bill Hoar who not only is a singer but can

whistle like a canary, was accompanied by the whole choir in his number. Then, a very special

request, Norm sang Baby Face to Bill’s great granddaughter, little MJ. In fact MJ was entertained

twice as the first time around the sound system had a failure. No concert is complete without at least

one hitch. We also had two other members of the younger set in our audience, namely Austin and

Hayley. A big thank you to their mother, Lisa, who is a staff member in the Behavioural Support

Office. At the end of our performance our choir director, Ann, introduced our volunteers, Lyn, Nancy,

Vickie, Martine and Norm. Regrettably Sylvia was away on vacation. Ann pointed out to our audience

that Vintage Voices is the choir of residents and new singers are always welcome. Then there was a

special treat for the choir at the next session. After the concert we had as our special guest, Murray

Lincoln, introduce all of us to the art of playing the wooden spoons. Murray is a wood carver and

makes the spoons from various types of wood to generate different pitches when played. Murray has

a great sense of humour and made a “band” out of us; piano, horn, washboards and a one string

bass. Yes, the band played the song “When the Saints Come Marching In.” All of our members

played the spoons, with different rhythms, as we accompanied the music on the tape recorder.

The Vintage Voices will now enjoy a summer recess but we cannot close without a very special

accord of thanks to our two principals, leader Ann Thomas and pianist Joanne Langstaff for their

dedication, enthusiasm and hard work that make the Vintage Voices the success that they are.

I will now hang up my pen and, as the poet so eloquently put it, “move on” and take a rest.

See you next season and until then keep a song in your heart.

Norm Savage, Vintage Voices Volunteer

Early Onset Alzheimer’s What is it exactly? Alzheimer’s disease is affecting people under the age of 65. People in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s who have careers, families and are often caregivers themselves are experiencing signs of this disease. It is believed that 1 in every 1000 people will develop Alzheimer’s disease before the age of 65. The people suffering from this disease are often misdiagnosed and symptoms of the disease are mistaken for signs of stress. It is estimated that up to 5 percent of current Alzheimer’s disease patients began experiencing symptoms prior to age 65. Signs and Symptoms:

Memory loss that impacts your daily life

Difficulty with planning or solving problems

Difficulty completing familiar tasks

Confusion with time or place

Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships

Increased or new found difficulty in speaking or writing words

Misplacing things and having difficulty retracing steps to locate them

Decreased or poor judgement

Withdrawal from work or social activities

Mood or personality changes How to cope: It is important to pay attention to the signs and symptoms you are experiencing and to seek out medical attention as soon as possible. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, early detection can allow you to develop ways to cope with the changes you are going to be experiencing. Ways to cope with your diagnosis include developing realistic goals and focusing on what you can do rather than what you can’t; developing a daily routine to reduce the time and frustration in trying to remember what needs to be done; approach one task at a time and avoid getting stuck, take a break when a task is too difficult or frustrating and return to it later; know that there is more than one way to solve a problem, assess how you solved the problem, what could have been done differently and make changes as needed to make it easier to solve next time; recognize the triggers that cause stress, this allows you to plan ahead and decide which activities you should avoid; and learn to accept the support of others, accepting help may be difficult as you feel like you are losing your independence however their support and encouragement will allow you to get through the tough times and setbacks. Asking for help will allow you to modify tasks in a way that allows you to continue to perform parts of the task independently. If you are interested in hearing more from the point of view of someone who is moving through the difficult journey of Early Onset Alzheimer’s, pick up the powerful book “Still Alice” written by Lisa Genova. In this book you’ll be taken on the journey from early diagnosis to end stage by the person experiencing the disease process. You’ll see the changes experiences and how they affect the lives of the person moving through the disease process. It allows us to see how people living with Alzheimer’s disease feel, think and react to the changes they experience in a way that we’ve never been able to do before. For more information on Early Onset Alzheimer’s please check out the Behavioural Supports Ontario board located on the 3rd floor as you get off the elevator.
