It is ironic that during the week East Fremantle and South Fremantle announced plans to partner up again at the port’s premier sports facility. There were cries from some of the Bulldogs’ faithful that their club would lose the home ground advantage if the

teams shared Fremantle Community Bank Oval – like they did for half of the previous century. There were similar concerns within the Sharks camp. Yet, as the arch rivals prepare for their 372nd clash the sense of their own turf providing either a benefit has been blown away by the Fremantle Doctor. Each of the past 11 derbies has been won by the visiting team – a staggering statistic consider how defiant the Sharks and Bulldogs have been over more than a hundred years at defending their own patch – either at Fremantle Oval or ATOM Stadium. If form is any indication the trend could well continue in round six. South Fremantle is undefeated and with Steve Verrier, Ashton Hams, Mason Shaw and Steven Edwards in strong form the Bulldogs would be supremely confident of continuing their run.

not so sweetfor derby rivals

But East Fremantle has surprised many in 2016 under new coach Rob Wiley. Cam Eardley, James Bristow, Liam Anthony and Andrew Stephen have helped the Sharks settle into the top five with a 2-2 record. In some ways a draw would be fitting – and a mighty payout from TABTouch. There has been a sense of camaraderie between the two foes recently in their work to devise an efficient way to accommodate both at Fremantle Oval. And the local council has been strong at helping the off-field relationship. South Fremantle, East Fremantle and the City of Fremantle revealed plans for a $20 million makeover of the 119-year-old ground, which, with the relocation of AFL club Fremantle to Cockburn, could commence before the end of the year. The Stan Reilly aged care facility at the southern end of the ground would be sold, which could provide half the funds needed for the venture. It would ensure a WAFL match is played in Fremantle almost each weekend – a major boost for both the port area but also for the State league trying to remain supporter friendly. As South Fremantle president Haydn Raitt said during the week, the sharing deal makes “economic sense.” However, for one more afternoon in football season all the friendliness goes out the window as the teams battle in anger.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

These days, it’s pretty tough to find WAFL memorabilia dating to the 1950s and 1960s. I’m not sure why. VFL items from that era turn up pretty regularly, especially footy cards, the Football Record and the more common items, like badges. But trying to find comparable items in WA is exponentially more difficult. Take the Football Budget, for instance. It’s some time since I came across a decent-size pile of 1960s Budgets. They used to come up for sale fairly often, but I think most of those that were going to come out of the woodwork have probably done so. With all this in mind, it’s particularly exciting when someone comes up with a pile of the stuff. So Shayne made my week when he emailed recently with photos of a stack of items of which I was aware, but had rarely seen. Some of the best were the rare shield-shaped cloth badges. Now, I have three of these in my collection. Having collected since 1985, that’s all I have been able to pick up. Admittedly, these have all come to me in the internet age, which has made collecting much easier, but they’re still tough to find. Shayne, meanwhile, has five of them. Frayed at the edges and certainly showing their age (I suspect they are from the 1960s), the badges are beautiful reminders of the heyday of the WAFL. When they were originally sold, they came in small, plastic packets with a card inserted

behind them. The back of the card read: “Genuine Woven Cloth Badges by Nucolorvue Productions. Beautifully woven cloth badges, ready to sew on to jacket, parka or pullover, etc. Resistant to dry cleaning. Fast colours – will not fade.” Nucolorvue Productions opened its doors in 1947 and is still around, though it has since changed its name to Visit Merchandise. An Eastern States-based seller recently turned up multiple copies of the East Fremantle badge from this series (in mint condition and still in the packet) and one cash-flush buyer paid the high price of $185 for the first one. Another sold for $85, which is probably around the right mark. I reckon they are probably worth $50-$100 apiece, depending on the club and the condition. Of course, there’s always the chance of a freak result (either low or high) at auction. Shayne also had a couple of plastic badges that probably date to a little earlier than the cloth versions. And these don’t turn up very often, either. Coincidentally, a few weeks ago, I picked up the East Perth and South Fremantle versions at auction. But over the past 10 years or so, I had probably seen no more than 20 of them – mostly for Subiaco, Swans and East Fremantle. Shayne had the Perth version, so the only one I’ve still never seen is the Claremont badge. Can anyone help with a picture?

Made by a WA company called Design Plastics, I’ve been able to find out very little about them. The only real clue is that the company’s phone number is included on the sticker that appears on the back of several of the badges – 84747. My research about when Perth had five-digit phone numbers has proved inconclusive. So, if anyone has any idea when these badges were made (or when we had five-digit phone numbers), I’d love to hear from you. I’ll save some of Shayne’s other items for next week’s column. Being the Anzac Day weekend, it would be remiss of me not to include at least some memorabilia connected to our ex-service men and women. The first is a photograph of the Darwin Mobile Force team that won the premiership in the Top End in 1939-40. Thankfully, the names were written on the back. And among those listed was Phillip Stingemore, who played 21 games for East Fremantle in 1936-37. I would also be interested to hear whether the G. Gabrielson named in the team was a member of the famous East Fremantle Gabrielson family, which included club stalwart Don Gabrielson. Which leads nicely into the other piece of footy-related war memorabilia. It’s a dark blue pennant that was won by Don Gabrielson when his army side won a carnival in Perth. Unfortunately, I’ve not yet been able to find out anything about the other players in Gabrielson’s team, so if anyone has any information, I’d love to hear from you. Finally, I have had a request from Lyn, who is looking for one last Mobil Footy Photos card from 1964 to complete her set. The card she is after features West Perth champion Brian France. So, if you are able to help Lyn in her hunt, please get in touch.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (MARVEL)Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly-formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Captain America: Civil War stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd and Frank Grillo, with William Hurt and Daniel Brühl. Captain America: Civil War soars into cinemas on April 28.

MARGUERITE (TRANSMISSION FILMS)1921, the beginning of the Golden Twenties. Not far from Paris It is party day at Marguerite Dumont’s castle. Like every year, an array of music lovers gathers around a great cause at the owner’s place. Nobody knows much about this woman except that she is rich and that her whole life is devoted to her passion: music. Marguerite sings. She sings wholeheartedly, but she sings terribly out of tune. In ways quite similar to the Castafiore, Marguerite has been living her passion in her own bubble, and the hypocrite audience, always coming in for a good laugh, acts as if she was the diva she believes she is. When a young, provocative journalist decides to write a rave article on her latest performance, Marguerite starts to believe even further in her talent. This gives her the courage she needs to follow her dream. Despite her husband’s reluctance, and with the help of a has-been divo, both funny and mean, she decides to train for her first recital in front of a crowd of complete strangers. Loosely inspired by the life of Florence Foster Jenkins. A French comedy/drama, Marguerite is showing at Cinema Paradiso and The Windsor Cinema from April 21.

For one team in this round six battle the 2016 WAFL season could well be over at 5pm on Saturday. Swan Districts and West Perth have similar 1-4 records and another defeat would present the loser with a Herculean task just to qualify for the top five. However, the black and whites will take some confidence into the clash after a valiant performance against the dual reigning premier, Subiaco, in the previous round. Sure, Swans were the Lions’ latest victim but for almost three quarters the lads from Steel Blue Oval gave Jarrad Schofield’s men some trouble. And it was Swans’ ability to provide drive through the middle of the ground that will be an issue for a wounded West Perth this weekend. Matt Riggio is finding plenty of the ball, Justin Simpson’s efficient kicking off half-back has been telling while Graham Jetta has also added some spark to defence. If Ricky Cary can get some ball supply, the big forward, alongwith Matthew Jukes and youngster Alby Dean can provide the Falcons with defensive headaches. Both teams are missing their leading ruckmen (Swans’ Nathan Blakely and Falcons’ Chris Keunen) so the match-up between

swan Districts

CLAREMONT v PEELThere is no place like home, even if it is a temporary one. Claremont return to the Showground for the first time in 2016 with plenty of confidence after kicking 19.2 in the triumph over East Fremantle in the last round. No more yips in front of goal. Jack Richardson gave the Tigers some much-needed spark in attack. The Thunder enjoyed the bye in the previous round, giving hardest workers Rory O’Brien, Sam Collins, Calvin Thorne and Ryan Nyhuis a welcomed break. Peel have a 2-2 record and need victory to stay in the top five.

PERTH v EAST PERTHWith some luck Perth have got a couple of bad days out of the system. Perth has played the two in-form teams of the competition – Subiaco and South Fremantle – and the results haven’t been great. The Demons managed just four goals apiece in each clash. However, coach Earl Spalding can still take some heart from particular players striving to do their best and Jared Bell, Brent Edmonds, Julian Jacobs and veteran Clint Jones fit into that category. The bad news for Perth is that East Perth might have turned the corner in 2016 after two straight wins to follow the three losses to open the season. West Coast’s Pat McGinnity and loyal Royal Kyle Anderson have been important in the club’s revival.

EAST FREMANTLE v SOUTH FREMANTLEIt is often true that it doesn’t matter where the port clubs are on the ladder to make a great Fremantle derby. But it helps when East Fremantle and South Fremantle have had impressive starts season 2016. The Sharks had a slip-up to Claremont last round but Rob Wiley has quickly garnered Jack Perham, Mitch Boyle and Brock O’Brien into key parts of a strong unit. And the move of Ryan Lester-Smith into defence has been a key move. South Fremantle go into the clash with an undefeated record from four outings. And Marlion Pickett has joined Ashton Hams in giving the Bulldogs plenty of grunt through midfield.

black and whites’ Troy Yukich and West Perth’s Seva Mozhaev will be interesting in determining stoppage advantage. Apart from Keunen, the Falcons have also missed defender Luke Tedesco, prized pre-season recruit Max Duffy, defender Kody Manning and veteran Matt Guadagnin early in the season. It has forced coach Bill Monaghan to test his depth and will hope the exposure of Keegan Knott, Ben King, Mark Hamilton and Mitch Peirce will lead to benefits down the track. It would be handy if the results came through in round six. Matt Fowler is due to play his 50th league match for the Falcons.*He might not have been spotted in a red and blue guernsey for a while but his time at the Falcons has helped Mark LeCras enter the WA football 200-game club this weekend. LeCras has played 158 for West Coast and 41 for the Falcons.

Grand plan to unite Sharks and Bulldogs at Fremantle Oval

WAFC

» Fremantle Oval is set to become the joint home of South Fremantle and East Fremantle football clubs.

The City of Fremantle has announced a $20 million plan to redevelop the Fremantle Oval precinct into the region’s premier community and sporting hub. As briefly mentioned in this edition of the Football Budget on page 5, the redevelopment will see South Fremantle Football Club and the East Fremantle Football Club co-located at Fremantle Oval, creating a West Australian Football League (WAFL) Centre of Excellence. The integrated project includes the re-alignment of the oval to be closer to the Victoria Pavilion, new club administration facilities, commercial office/retail space, a gymnasium and grass banking. The adjacent former Stan Reilly Centre site would be redeveloped as part of the project. The five-year redevelopment of the Fremantle Oval precinct is one of six ‘transformational projects outlined in the City’s Freo 2029 – Transformational Moves document released last year.East Fremantle Football Club President Mark Stewart said they had been considering options for their future for some time. “Although we have a strong tradition at East Fremantle Oval where the club has had its home since the 1950s, a potential return to Fremantle Oval will take us back to where we started,” he said.

“We need to look to the future, so can’t overlook the benefits of a possible move back to Freo Oval which would include a modern facility, a fantastic central location and our club’s ongoing viability.” South Fremantle Football Club President Haydn Raitt said the club could see benefits of sharing with East Fremantle Football Club and upgrades to Fremantle Oval. “We may be old rivals, but there are many reasons why sharing Fremantle Oval makes good economic sense. We all want a sustainable future for football in Western Australia,” he said. West Australian Football Commission Chief Executive Gavin Taylor congratulated both clubs, the City of Fremantle, and Department of Sport and Recreation for driving the project and said the concept had the full support of the WAFC. “The West Australian Football Commission has been engaged right throughout the process and looks forward to seeing this exciting project come to fruition,” Mr Taylor said. “Great facilities for our WAFL teams and fans is critically important for the future of our premier State League competition. “I thank the Presidents and CEOs of both clubs for their collaborative approach, long term strategic thinking and focus on delivering the best shared facilities for both Clubs into the future.” Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said developing the Fremantle Oval precinct was a vital step in Fremantle’s ongoing revitalisation and a great win for the local community and the two local WAFL clubs. “What we’re looking to achieve is the development of a significant community asset where locals and visitors can enjoy cultural and sporting events,” Mayor Pettitt said. “The integrated redevelopment of Fremantle Oval and adjacent areas will ensure maximum community benefit and financial sustainability of the project. We believe this is a win-win for all concerned – local football and local people. “Once completed, the community will be able to look forward to more West Australian Football League games, improved spectator facilities and a great range of community events throughout the year. “I also look forward to seeing East Fremantle return home to the heart of Fremantle and we would of course welcome the club back to Fremantle Oval with open arms.”

The West Australian Football League has reappointed successful 2015 State coach Darren Harris to lead the WAFL against Tasmania at Steel Blue Oval on June 11. Harris, who coached the WAFL to a 44-point victory over the SANFL at Lathlain Park in last year’s Carlton Draught State Game, said he was excited to receive the opportunity again in 2016. “I really enjoyed the experience last year and jumped at the chance to be involved again,” he said. “There is a lot of pride and passion around State footy and it is always an honour to be involved at any level. All of the players last year showed so much commitment and really bought into the program and that’s one of the main reasons I’m so keen to be involved again.” WAFL Manager Cameron Knapton said the WAFL was delighted to secure a State Coach of Darren’s expe rience for a second year. “All nine WAFL clubs were unanimous in their support of appointing Darren as an independent coach last season and it’s terrific he’s accepted the role again,” Knapton said. Harris will appoint assistant coaches over the coming months and Subiaco Football Club will provide support staff for the 2016 State Game.

Rodriguez ShieldThe Rodriguez Shield is awarded to the most consistent WAFL club of the season, with points allocated across all three grades. Clubs are awarded 10 points for every league win and four points for a reserves or colts win.

Umpiring MasterplanThe umpiring masterplan was formulated this season to provide all umpires and umpire coaches with a consistent platform to use in the delivery of positive umpiring. WAFC Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts said that umpires made no secret they would make errors in games, but were committed to ensuring that those errors were not through lack of knowledge or lack of effort. “We pride ourselves on being the 10th team in the WAFL competition,” he said.

Amateur FootballFine weather Round 2 winsLast Saturday’s A Grade games were won by no less than 44 points in a round with big wins for five clubs. After a big loss in Round 1, West Coast turned their season around to win by 64 points at home against North Beach. Brad Bennet and Lee Stringer stared up forward for West Coast, kicking 13 goals between them. Kelmscott kicked off their 2016 season with a game they would rather forget. A 133-point thrashing from Scarborough with Marc Re kicking nine goals up forward for the visitors. Trinity Aquinas outplayed Fremantle CBC at Morris Buzacott Reserve, claiming an 87-point win. The game was decided in the second quarter when Trinity Aquinas held Fremantle CBC to 1.1 while kicking 7.4 to

In their first A Grade game, Hamersley Carine was

given a tough challenge as they faced the reigning

premiers University.

lead by 55 points at the main break. Trinity Aquinas had nine individual goal kickers with Quinten Lynch leading the way with five for the afternoon. Curtin Uni Wesley finished with a 44-point win over Kalamunda to claim their first win of the season. In their first A Grade game, Hamersley Carine was given a tough challenge as they faced the reigning premiers University. The match provided Hamersley Carine with an idea of how they are travelling, which unfortunately ended with a 62-point loss. Two big games to watch this weekend are the 2015 B Grade grand final rematch between Hamersley Carine and Scarborough. Last year’s grand final was decided by just one-point however, with Scarborough winning both their A Grade games so far, this match may not be as close as last time they met. Trinity Aquinas and Wesley Curtin face off in the 2015 preliminary final rematch. Expect tension as the narrow eight-point loss knocked Trinity Aquinas out of the finals last year.

Can You Help?Since the beginning of the 1960 WAFL season there have been 5192 league debutants at an average of 93 new players per season. Research continues on the WAFL player database which is missing a date of birth for only 24 of these players. A club of origin and birth place is not recorded for a further 198 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight players for whom information is sought. These include:

Terry James ARCHER (South Fremantle 1977, 2 games) Cameron Robert BENNELL (Swan Districts 1999, 7 games)Frank John Peter CATTALINI (Claremont 1973-1976, 28 games) Bruce Graham CLARKE (East Perth 1968-1970, 12 games) Kym Anthony DAvISON (West Perth 1980-1981, 10 games) Robert Simon HAMBURG (Perth 1963-1964, 12 games) Andrew James KINROSS (East Fremantle 1991, 1 game) John Wayne TANGNEy (Perth 1966, 1 game)

Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (via message on 9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission
