Background Who Cares? Scotland is committed to having high educational aspirations for care experienced young people. This year, Who Cares? Scotland and the SQA will provide two scholarships for care experienced young people to attend the Harvard University Summer School, Secondary School Programme. The deadline for applications is Friday 29 th November 2019. Harvard Summer School & Who Cares? Scotland Harvard is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The Summer School programme will involve spending seven weeks at Harvard, studying two college level academic courses and taking part in cultural and social activities. The programme will take place from the 20 th June to 8 th August 2020. Who Cares? Scotland has supported care experienced young people to attend Harvard for the past ten years. We have developed good personal relationships with the Director of the Harvard University Summer School and his staff. These relationships are invaluable in ensuring that our young people are well supported while attending Harvard. This is a fully immersive, seven-week college experience with rigorous academic requirements. Who Cares? Scotland is committed to having high educational aspirations for care experienced young people. This year, Who Cares? Scotland and the SQA will provide two scholarships for care experienced young people to attend the Harvard University Summer School, Secondary School Programme.

The deadline for applications is Friday 29th November 2019.

To apply, the applicant must be:

Currently attending school or college. At least 15 years old by 1st December 2019 and will not turn 19 years old before 31st July 2020. Willing to be an ambassador for Who Cares? Scotland and the SQQ, through writing blogs and

speaking publicly about their experience. In possession of a valid, in-date passport. Able to travel to and live in the USA unaccompanied. A Who Cares? Scotland Family Member. If the applicant is not a member already, sign up here:

- Stayed with parents and had a social worker- Brought up by another family member- In foster care- In a residential unit/school- In secure care- Lived with adoptive parents

ApplyingWe suggest that applicants read all about the Summer School Programme on the university website and this document, then discuss the programme with a supportive adult to determine if the Summer School is the right opportunity.

The next step is to read the information on the following pages and then complete the application form. Please send the completed application form to [email protected] (with ‘Harvard Summer School 2020’ in the subject line) no later than 29th November 2019.

Application process:

Application parts 1-4 This section is to be completed by the applicant.

Application part 5This section is to be completed by a supporting adult, such as a social worker or throughcare worker.

Application part 6This section MUST be completed by the supporting agency to confirm the contribution that the supporting agency will make to secure the application for the Harvard University Summer School Programme.

Personal statement

In part 3 of the application, applicants are required to write a personal statement about why they would like to take part in the programme and what skills and experience they have that will enable them to thrive in this environment. We are looking for bright, hardworking young people who:

- will work hard and thrive academically- will be able to share a bedroom with other students - will benefit from spending their summer at Harvard University - will cope well with travelling to the USA and living independently for 7 weeks- have good social skills and are keen to get involved in extracurricular activities

We are especially looking for someone who can be an ambassador for Who Cares? Scotland, through writing blogs and speaking publicly about their experience.

Once the applications have been reviewed by staff at Who Cares? Scotland, successful applicants will be invited to attend a formal interview. The interviews will take place at the start of January. Successful applicants will be contacted via email about your interview date.

Our offer of support does not guarantee a place on the Harvard Summer School Programme . Once selected by Who Cares? Scotland, applicants will then need to apply directly to the Harvard University Summer School Programme, however, Who Cares? Scotland will provide ample support during this process.

Costings

Total cost of the programme per applicant is approximately £12,500.

Harvard University Fees £10,000- Tuition for two 4-credit courses- All meals and accommodation in halls- Harvard Visa processing fees- US Health Insurance

Additional costs £2,500- Return flights to Boston- Travel Insurance- Book purchase for courses- Pocket Money (£50 per week)- Immunizations*- F-1 Student Visa- Return flights to Belfast to obtain F-1 Visa

Total £12,500*Harvard University require all students to provide proof of Immunizations/immunity to MMR, Varicella (Chicken Pox), Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis, Hepatitis B and Meningitis.

For the application to be considered by Who Cares? Scotland, the local authority or care provider must agree to contributing £3,500 to the costs of the programme. Who Cares? Scotland and the SQA will fund the remaining costs.

No personal financial contribution is required from the applicant.
