Step 1: Locate NID

Locate your telephone NetworkInterface Device (NID).This is usuallya grey plastic box on the outside ofyour home where telephoneservice enters. It may also be inyour basement or garage. This boxis a demarcation point between thephone network, owned by the localphone company, and your homewiring, owned by you.

Step 3: Wrap Wires and Attach a Warning Message

Once you have confirmed this is the correct line, leave the phone plugdisconnected (or if there is no plug, remove both wires from their terminals).

Wrap black electrical tape around exposed connections (if you removedwires from terminals, be sure to wrap each exposed connection separately),and attach a label to unplugged wires. This will warn technicians not tomistakenly reconnect the local phone line

You may cut out and use the tagabove to label your taped-off wires.

Step 2: Identify and Unplug the Phone Line

Open the “customer”side of yourNID (A). You should see one ormore phone lines plugged intophone jacks (B) or one or moresets of wires connected toterminals (C); these are the phonelines coming into your home. Ifyou have one phone line there willbe likely be only one connection.

Unplug the phone line for yourhome’s primary line (B), or ifno plug is present, removethe red or green wire or thewhite/blue or blue/white wirefrom its terminal (C).

Verify the line is disconnectedby checking to see there is nowhite noise or dial tone on aphone plugged into a jack forthat line (D).
