This year kicked off with a bang thanks to Team Clark Howard and Cox Enterprises. Atlanta’s favorite consumer advocate Clark Howard, along with partner Cox Enterprises, led a team of amazing sponsor groups and volunteers in the construction of seven new homes. This accomplishment marked some pretty impressive milestones. Since he began building with us 20 years ago, Clark and his partners have built 61 Habitat homes, and all before his 60th birthday! The completion of these homes also marks Cox Enterprises’ 20th and 21st Atlanta Habitat homes, earning the company a spot on our coveted Sponsor Wall of Fame. And lastly, these seven houses complete Atlanta Habitat’s newest subdivision on the aptly named Clark Howard Lane – a cul-de-sac of 13 Atlanta Habitat homes near the soon-to-be redeveloped Ft. McPherson. Clark welcomed three new sponsors this year – Atlanta-based MailChimp, which sponsored two homes, Charles Schwab, and Signature FD. Longtime Clark supporters The Coupon Mom and the Dan and Merrie Boone Foundation also sponsored homes with Team Clark this year. Along with these sponsors, hundreds of volunteers from all over the city and around the country made these homes possible, and we are grateful for everyone who took part. Evelyn Jackson has been an Atlanta Habitat for Humanityhomeowner for 27 years. In 1988,she saw a sign in the Edgewoodneighborhood that Atlanta Habitat was building 20 newhomes in the area. Ms. Jacksonsaw this as an opportunity to own her own home.

The build process stands out toMs. Jackson for multiple reasons. One was that her home was one ofthe first to be built in conjunctionwith the 1998 Jimmy Carter Work Project. “The Carter WorkProject built 20 Habitat houses, and Mr. Jimmy Carter and Mrs.Carter were there at my house dedication. He was verynice during the project. He even came and worked onthe houses himself.”

But meeting the former presidentof the United States wasn’t theonly highlight of the build processfor Ms. Jackson. She said meetingthe other homeowners who weregoing through the same process was just as rewarding. “It was nice to meet otherhomeowners and get to work togetherto build our homes. It was nice to be there and participateand be able to seewhat went into our homes.”

Owning her ownhome meant more toMs. Jackson than justthe floors or th walls.

“To me, it meant giving my daughter and son a home wherethey didn’t have to share a room.Where we could be on our ownand have a place to come back to and call home.”

In December 2014, Ms. Jacksonwas one of six Atlanta Habitatfamilies to pay off their mortgages, a feeling Ms. Jacksonwon’t soon forget. “It was thegreatest experience I’ve ever had. To look back and say this is mine. All the sweat, time, and effort my family and I put into it, it’s incredible to look back from day one to

now and say it’s all mine. It’s simply amazing.”

Atlanta Habitat is in full swing in our new headquarters and Family Support Center at 824 Memorial Drive, SE in Reynoldstown! We have settled in but have certainly not slowed down!

We kicked off 2015 building with Clark Howard in the Howard Point subdivision, named in honor of Clark and his wife, Lane. In partnership with Cox Enterprises, other sponsors, and hundreds of volunteers, Clark led the completion of the cul-de-sac, whichnow boasts 13 beautiful, energy-efficienthomes. We are grateful to all the Clark Howard

build sponsors and volunteers for their generosity in helping seven new families build and buy their first home this year.

Speaking of volunteers, Atlanta Habitat celebrated all of the volunteers whosupport our mission at the annual Appreciation Event in April. We honoredseveral outstanding volunteers whose many years of service have made atremendous impact on affordable housing in Atlanta. We simply could notdo all that we do without our volunteer force. Look inside for informationon all the winners of our Volunteers of the Year.

Two of our longtime build sponsors Peachtree Presbyterian Church and theMarist Women Build reached milestones in their support of Atlanta Habitat.Peachtree Presbyterian became our first faith-based sponsor to participatein a blitz build, constructing a home in seven consecutive days. The womenof Marist completed their 15th home in partnership with a qualified, working family. Check out the complete stories of these special sponsors.

We hope you have had the opportunity to visit our brand new ReStore at 271 Chester Avenue, SE – our retail outlet store that sells new and gently-used merchandise. All net proceeds from the ReStore go directly to our affordable housing mission. The ReStore has been in high gear with special events, and our sales have increased thanks to the support of our shoppers and donors. The ReStore provides a unique but critical revenue stream for Atlanta Habitat, while also helping to divert hundredsof tons of waste from the landfill.

When you see our donor list inside this issue, you will be amazed at all of the organizations and people it takes to help us deliver our mission and serve more families. We are humbled by this outstanding support.

Lastly, we would be remiss if we did not give our thanks and appreciationto Larrie Del Martin, our longtime president and CEO who retired at the endof March. Larrie Del’s commitment to bettering our city’s neighborhoodsand improving the lives of hardworking families will continue to inspire us.

Atlanta Habitat celebrated the culmination of National Volunteer Week in April by honoring our volunteers at theannual Volunteer AppreciationReception. Over 150 people attended the event at the AtlantaHabitat warehouse, where werecognized individuals whomade a significant volunteer contribution to Atlanta Habitat in 2014. We inducted 85 volunteers with more than 100 hours of service into theCentury Club. In addition, we honored 21 volunteers with the President’s Volunteer ServiceAward, given to those who complete over 250 hours of service in a year.

This year, four exceptional individuals received Atlanta Habitat’s Volunteer of the YearAward. Congratulations to JimBranan (St. James UnitedMethodist Church), Jack andBette Whitley (Dunwoody UnitedMethodist Church), and DaveWooten (Northside Drive BaptistChurch). Each of the four winnershas volunteered with AtlantaHabitat for at least 16 years asbuild coordinators for their respective churches—overseeing

fundraising and volunteer recruitment for their churches’builds each year. These four represent some of AtlantaHabitat’s leading advocates in Atlanta’s faith community.Congrats to all of our award winners!

It has been such an exciting springseason at the ReStore. Since the beginning of 2015, generous donations have been provided by individual families as well as largecorporations. Items included the“usual” things such as: sofas, armoires, cabinets, and doors. But, in the pastfew months, some unique items havearrived as well. You could walk into theReStore showroom and see a toweringvintage organ, large quantities oftrees and flowers, a tall lamp in the shape of a human, or possiblyhundreds of pieces of artwork. Younever know what you will find!

One special donation included anantique Minton china set with theBellemeade pattern. A customer was wowed and explained that thisparticular pattern was her weddingchina 30 years ago, but the dishes had been discontinued. She was immediately able to add these to her existing set. Another exciting event that took place this spring wasthe first D.I.Y. workshop in the new ReStore. KarenCooper, with the blog “Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza,” led a

class on how to give new life to oldchairs. She guided over 25 customersin how to sand, paint, and reupholsterwooden chairs. In her teaching, sherevealed that she recently used ReStore doors to create a headboardfor her guest room bed. The customersdiscussed ideas on how to repurposewindows, desks, and shutters. Sign up for our e-blast at our website,www.atlantahabitat.org, to register for the next workshop!

As the ReStore closed out the spring season, staff said farewell to Atlanta Habitat President andCEO Larrie Del Martin. Before sheretired on March 31, the ReStoreheld a special presentation for her.Martin spent much of her finalyears at Atlanta Habitat planningspecific details for the new facility.Because of her efforts, the ReStorenow has significantly more

storage room with a mezzanine level - a dream cometrue for the ReStore. From now on, this will be known as the “Martin Mezzanine.” Thank you for a great start to 2015!

Since they drove the first nail on March 21, close to 300women had a hand in building the 15th Marist WomenBuild (MWB) house alongside the Stafford family. On Saturday, May 9, the group celebrated Mother’s Day weekendby completing construction on the house and holding a beautifuldedication ceremony.

MWB is led by an outstandingboard of over 30 women volunteers who spend countless hours fundraising, recruiting volunteers, planning events, and promoting their work withAtlanta Habitat - reaching a goal of building a home for a woman by women.

The MWB has long been afamily affair, with mothersbuilding with daughters, sisters building alongside sisters, and even granddaughters building with grandmothers. In 2014,the Marist Women Buildboard decided to make one ofthe seven Saturdays a “Mother/Son” build day.

Trish Coughlin, one of the 2015 MWB chairs, had thisto say about the significance of building alongside herson on this special day: “Although we are a women

build, many Marist moms requested we have a day onwhich we could ‘bring our sons to work.’ The intentwas to show our teenage boys how Marist moms can

build a home for a deserving singlemom and her family. It was such a great success that we decided tohave another this year. It was evident the boys who built had a newfound respect for their moms at the end of the day!”

Atlanta Habitat is grateful to have such longstandingsupport from the entireMarist community, whichhas quite a remarkable history of involvement. In 1988, Marist School established the first highschool habitat chapter in the world, and since 1992,has played a vital role in the Independent HighSchool build. Marist Schoolcontinued making its markin the Habitat history bookswhen, in 2001, it created the first high school“Women Build” chapter in

the world. The MWB, which constructed its first housein 2003, has continued this partnership each year with increasing momentum. Next spring, the Maristwomen and students will collectively celebrate their40th Atlanta Habitat house!

Unique Way to Support Atlanta Habitat

Atlanta Habitat held its seventh annual Clark Howard Societyevent on April 29 to celebrate donors who make significant gifts to end substandard housing throughout our city. Bill and Judy Vogel graciously hosted the event at their home.

This year marks Clark’s 60th Habitat house, and during the program, he spoke of the incredible men, women, and childrenhe has met over the past 20 years of partnering with AtlantaHabitat. He explained, “Folks come out year after year to helpbuild homes for people they have never met before. It is absolutely incredible. And our homeowners are some of the very hardest working people I know.”

Guests also heard from homeowner Michele Carlisle. Clark sponsored her home in 2011. Michele shared her story of working to qualify for a Habitat home to provide a secure place for her disabled mother and three children. “I didn’t

2014/15 Gifts in HonorGifts made from 9/1/2014-4/2/2015. Honorees are bolded.

2014 House SponsorsThe following corporate, civic, and faith-based organizations and individual supporters sponsored Atlanta Habitat for Humanity homes and renovations with gifts of $1,000 ormore 9/1/2014-4/1/2015. The list is in chronological order by start date.

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity apologizes for any omissions made in our donor lists. Please contact us with corrections. While all donations are important to us, space limitations only allow us to print donations of $1,000 or more.

In 2014, Peachtree Presbyterian Church sponsoredtheir 150th Habitat home, becoming the first sponsorto do so. This year, Peachtree Presbyterian had yet another first with Atlanta Habitat.

In April, they became the first faith-based organization to participate in a blitz build. Over thecourse of seven consecutive build days, beginning on Saturday, April 25 and ending the following Saturday, May 2, more than 275 Peachtree Presbyterianvolunteers worked tirelessly to build a new home withthe Thurston family.

Peachtree Presbyterian’s commitment toward AtlantaHabitat shined throughout the week with several volunteers taking time off work to volunteer on weekdays so that the house would be finished on time.

There was tangible excitement in the air as volunteersand Ms. Thurston witnessed the construction of the home progress day by day. Thanks to OxBlue Corporation, a time-lapse video recorded the construction process, and volunteers were able towatch a streaming video of each build day on both Atlanta Habitat’s and Peachtree Presbyterian’s websites.

Finally, after seven long days of laboring in the heat,Peachtree Presbyterian and Atlanta Habitat dedicatedthe home to Ms. Thurston and her family in a touchingceremony. The volunteers felt accomplished after successfully completing the blitz build challenge andachieving something incredible as a church community. Most importantly, Peachtree Presbyterian members felt proud to have provided funding, volunteers, prayers, and hope for 151 homeowners in the city of Atlanta over the past 29 years.
