That’s not stopping the momentum of the building industry, however. Local builders are very busy with renovations and new construction so far in 2017. While the national trend of home building may be head- ing toward smaller homes, you won’t find many houses being built in the tri-county area that are less than 2,000 square feet. In the city of Fenton, the smallest single fam- ily home in a medium density residential neighborhood must be at least 950 square feet, according to Mike Reilly, building and zoning administrator. Weir builds mostly in the 2,100- to 4,000-square-foot range, completing about eight homes per year. “People want smaller homes with a smarter design,” said Weir. “For more square footage, people are looking at adding space with a basement, rather than falling into the trap of ‘bigger is better.’” While the homes he builds are more mod- erate in size, clients are spending the extra dollars on amenities. “They’re including everything from energy-efficient win- dows, doors, insulation and furniture to wood trim packages and custom paint jobs,” he said. 2B Sunday, March 5, 2017 LOCAL LIVING www.tctimes.com

About every 10 years or so, I like to play this game called ‘Who’s com-ing to dinner?’ The rules are that players must choose several famous people, dead or alive, with whom they would like to share a great din-ner and an evening of fun. I’ll start. First, I don’t want any dead people at my dinner table, so they’re out. Not ‘The Walking Dead’ people either. I also don’t want any politicians. That leaves the fol-lowing. My first choice would be Sam Elliott. You know, so my husband has someone to visit with. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. My next choice would be Kathy Bates. She is my very favorite actress of all time. Nothing can compare to her perform-ances in ‘Misery,’ ‘Fried Green To-matoes,’ and ‘Dolores Claiborne’ to name a few. One of her lines in the latter is one of my favorites. When she says to a detective, ‘You’re sorry, are you? Bet the last time you were sorry was when you needed to use the pay toilet and the string on your pet dime broke.’ Sweet! Author Stephen King is also on my list. He can sit next to Kathy since she is in several of the movies made from his books, and they seem to be friends. He is my favorite author of all time. He has, in my humble opin-ion, a brilliant mind. If you’ve ever read and seen the movies ‘The Green Mile’ and ‘The Shawshank Redemp-tion,’ you know what I mean. He also wrote ‘Dolores Claiborne.’ When people say, ‘You can’t make this up,’ I say, ‘Yes, yes you can.’ Actor Denzel Washington is also on my invitation list. He is a very talent-ed actor, seems like a very nice man

and has a smile that probably lights up every room he is in. I have yet to see a movie he is in that I didn’t like. Did I say he has a nice smile? Talk about smiles that light up rooms, Eddie Murphy will have to be there for sure. He is one of the funniest comedians/actors I’ve ever seen, and he has a great laugh. Just watching the numerous characters he plays all at once is a hoot. Re-member ‘The Klumps,’ where he plays the main character and all his family members. Now that’s talent. The multi-talented Ellen DeGe-neres would be a welcome guest. She is a great actress, comedian, TV host, writer — not to mention her generosity. My favorite Ellen quote is, ‘Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for — in or-der to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.’ You got that right sister! Josh Groban and Lady Gaga would provide the musical entertainment. Both are very talented entertainers, and seem like people you could have a regular conversation with. Hey, maybe Gaga could give me and Kathy Bates some fashion tips. Last, but not least, my husband, Mike, would have to be there. He’s not famous, but I wouldn’t dream of not including him at this party. Four members of ‘The Chew’ cast, including Mario Batali, Michael Sy-mon, Clinton Kelly and Carla Hall, will of course prepare the feast and cock-tails for us. ‘The Chew’ is my favorite daytime television show and anything they prepare for this fabulous dinner party will be fine with me. Now wouldn’t that be a lively evening with a diverse, talented fun group of guests? Cheers! BUILDERSContinued from Page 1B Scott Tarkleson of Fenton Lakes Build-ing & Design says he’s busier than he was in 2008 and 2009 and likes to have two homes going at one time, finishing four or five a year. “I turn down as many jobs as I take on,” he said. Most of his homes are 4,000 square feet and up. “Everybody asks about cost,” he said. “You’re talking a minimum of $130 per square foot. A lot has to do with energy codes and the more engineering that’s re-quired since the 2015 Building Code was adopted. There have been changes in insula-tion and what we have to do in garages and basements, plus smoke detectors, radon and carbon monoxide detectors.” Most local builders agree that the trend this year is not so much downsizing from the “McMansions” of the past, but “right-sizing.” “I still build large homes, but I do see people’s thought processes changing toward ‘rightsizing’ the size of rooms to the house,” said Patrick Widing, custom home builder. “They’re building for comfort, not just a big open space, with more of a focus on the floor plan and furniture layout,” he added. “They like to right-size from floors to ceiling, adding an extra layer of trim on walls, beams on ceilings, etc. When you add detail on ceilings, it builds ‘cozy’ and brings the room closer together.” Widing’s average custom built home is between 3,000 and 8,000 square feet, although his company builds everything from remodel projects to large waterfront homes. The bottom end of price per

n Home con-struction is off to a strong start in 2017 with local builders catering to cli-ents who want smart design features rather than huge liv-ing spaces.

square foot for one of his homes is $180, “and goes up from there,” he said. “Every year, everything goes up across the board, from windows and appliances to labor.” He completes between two and four projects a year. “I’m not the high-volume builder,” he said. “My projects have more detail, trim and content.”

People who are look-ing to build this year can help manage their costs by paying atten-tion to the details of size, number of stories, the shape, type of roof, fixtures and finishes, appliances and design features. “We’ll start your budget at about $1.30 per square foot,” said

Weir. “But it can easily go up from there, depending on complexity of design, size, lot characteristics and finishes.”

MOONLIGHTAt once a vital portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friend-ship, and love, Moon-light is a groundbreak-ing piece of cinema that reverberates with

deep compassion and universal truths. Anchored by extraordinary performances from a tremendous ensemble cast, Barry Jenkins’s staggering, singular vision is profoundly moving in its portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape our lives and make us who we are.
